DUDE! Where have you been? You were one of the first channels I watched when I first got into knives a year and a half ago...You gave us all some smoking advice that was really appreciated! I hope you are well and this means you're back. Cheers!
That was different. Good concept. Would definitely like to see more choices. I don't currently own any premium knives but I did get the red micarta October at an unbeatable price and I love it. Good video.
Thank you for the comparison of these popular knife brands budget vs. premium models. I like videos like this because they do in fact help us to make an informed decision! Again, thank you KB!!
Man, I'm glad you're back making videos. If you are ok with the 420HC that Buck sells, there is a 3rd option for the 112. The Boy Scouts still sell the LT version on their store. $28 plus shipping. You get thicker handles made from FRN plastic and no clip. But I love mine. My latest purchase is a new old stock Victorinox Explorer Plus. I'm hoping it's a great carry for the days I don't want to carry 2 knives. One last knife - if you want a big Spyderco with decent steel, the Byrd Raven 2 is on sale for $55 now. I bought it, and mine came with BD1N steel, not BD1 like the website says. That's a steel Spyderco is still putting on the Para 3, and it's only $55. A heck of a competitor to the Tenacious for the same money.
Expensive knives DO SUCK...no reason to rip off every customer you possibly can...SO MANY assholes think we can all drop 300-400 for a fuckin knife. GUESS WHAT? WE CANNOT!
Make some more of these videos. The Knife Beater takes care of those on lower budgets. Most of these upgraded versions are just not worth it. I'm glad someone is saying it.
The gripe about expensive upgrades makes me gripe about something else - We variants, Kizer and similar brands don’t have anything truly inexpensive relative to Ganzo, Stivien and similar. I’m not sure the reason but I don’t like the strategy of YT influencers quietly sponsored while pretending they are personally passionate and have no financial connections. (Suggesting to be upfront about sponsorship.)
Options are always welcome...I wish more companies offered the variety of budget every day users and the higher end steels...just because. I like both.
I like the concept. This represents most of my time when choosing a pocket knife. I love me some good blade steel! It bugs me when I can get a a great design or upgraded materials but with a so so blade steel. Other times I want certain operating mechanisms or ergonomics and not others. Finally, I do have limits on price depending on what I want. So it’s not always the top of the line I want. It’s the right combination of things that makes a great tool.
Completely agree with you on your assessment of the Praxis. That's a knife I don't regret one bit about shelling out the hard-earned money for. Now I wanna see your assessment of the T1 models. You teased us! I have the budget T1 and I've been contemplating getting the titanium version. It is soooo great to have you back. I hope you're doing well!
Thanks, couldn't agree more...well, maybe the high end upgrades don't actually suck per se, but they certainly fail the value equation. I long ago learned to mentally place things on the sigmoid value curve; you know, avoid junk just cause the price is low...and avoid "top of the line" for enhancements that cost a lot but actually do little; this applies to, well, just about everything! I try, and admittedly sometimes fail, to avoid these higher end temptations and stick to the mid-range.
I was not familiar with the SVC until now, so thanks for that. Yeah, I have the same problem with the premium pieces, but I'm getting better. We didn't have all these quality mid-range options a few years back. Civivi/Sencut have definitely blurred the lines that separate budget knives from mid-range.
I think it's funny you mentioned the Model 6 in this, as my mind quickly went to that knife. I have a titanium model with S35VN that only ran me $150 (shipped!), though... so I'm not bummed about it.
Great video mate and thanks for sharing. They are nice knives but I can't justify paying big money. I always like traditional folders and mainly use Opinel and love them. My son bought a few of these type of knives and they are definitely nicely finished and using super steels but for everyday use I will be worried if I lost it.
Buck - biggest ruse ever perpetrated on the knife community , 1981 Buck switched from the super steel of the time ( 440c ) because Paul Bos perfected a cryo heat treat process and could get higher rockwell hardness which gave cryo treated 420hc equivilant edge retention to 440c non cryo heat treated. Now the old fuds that swore by 420hc over 440c in the 80-90s and talked up "the Bos heat treat" so much it is now mythilogical in its power and can give 420hc the same edge retention as S35VN or some other super steel , which is complete garbage. Every manufacturer now uses a Cryo heat treat Buck is just another cheap knife company putting out cheap knives at a high price , what is awesome about Buck is the forever warranty and anyone that buys a Buck for any other reason than the warranty is wasting thier money and time. Custom Bucks with higher grade steel excluded from this comment , i would own a buck 110 in s30 or something.
We Praxis and Kizer october ti are in my top 10 both are great. Picked up the kizer ti for $74 so watch for the price drop if you are on the fence. Best knife purchase value wise for me in 15 years.
Cool video. Sometimes it's worth it to pay more if you get what you want. I prefer Carbon Fiber over Ti, lighter weight, thinner grind, more opening options, certain finishes and certain steels. I'll gladly pay more for 14c28n over D2, never found a s35vn I liked besides Fantoni, and haven't been impressed with Chinese m390/20cv.
It all depends on what they buyer intends to do with the knife. Some like a knife they can throw in their pocket and use everyday without worrying about ruining the aesthetics. Some like to collect the high end knives for collection purposes, and look at them as works of art, (which some of them truly are!)! There is no such thing as a knife that sucks, unless it does not function properly. Something for everybody! 😊
I wouldn't say expensive knives suck. I would say far less expensive, Chinese knives are built at a quality level we did not know they could accomplish. A surprising, equal level of quality as American knives. The only difference has been, until recently, the Chinese have not worked with premium steels and the better, stronger locking mechanisms. Now, WE does do this, and they cost just as much as American knives. To me, there is no reason to buy a WE knife over a Civivi knife. Civivi and their Chinese competitors are currently making plenty good enough knives. Myself, I don't need anything more than 14c28n, s35vn, or even carbon blades, and I don't need fancy, abalone or whatever handles. I own American and Chinese knives. I love them all. My only complaint is Benchmade knives rarely arrive with centered blades and they're too expensive.
Excellent point about Civivi vs WE, I agree. I like Benchmade, but I have also experienced a few centering issues. I think the fact that they use washers has something to do with it because I don't see that problem as often with ball-bearing pivots.
I'm glad Buck snuck in there. I really wish these channels would stop pushing Chinese knives. It is just sad that people want to make the wages they make in the US, but want to buy and support a country with no workers rights or human rights. Such a hypocrisy

So nice of you to say, thanks! I posted something in the community section that explains it all.
Knives are turning into jewelry or accessories nowadays. I like the look and feel of premium, but i don't want to use my premium knives.
love the video! i feel like it could also be called “titanium frame locks suck! (unless you add a thumb stud)”
Lol! Very good!!!😆

Buck knives represent a very small portion of my collection. I mainly stick with the 110 and 112. I am a big fan of the discontinued Marksman though.
As a collector, and user for many years ive got some pricey folders. Just got a civivi backlash and surprised on the quality for the money.
Oh yeah, the Baklash is a fantastic value and still very relevant.

The Buck 110 sport is the best upgrade ever in knives.

Folding knives have moving parts.
EDC a fixed blade, or get a multi-tool;
_THEIR_ moving parts have utility/value.
