As a British person who discovered Pakistani music about a year ago it definitely has a special place in my heart as each song takes you on such a journey. My favourite so far has to be Dam Mastam by the great Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The vocals left me speechless but the whole composition is just musical storytelling
It's not Pakistani music. Rather it's Indian music widely practiced by these great Pakistani musicians. India and Pakistan have the common cultural heritage, but dividing the country wouldn't change the origin and name of Indian music.
There is no thing as Pakistani Music its actually called Hindustani Classical. The whole subcontinent has two school of music - Hindustani Classical and Carnatic Music
The Sarangi can, it’s fretless, uses bowed gut stings, and is played with the nail/cuticle allowing you to do exactly the type of gamak you hear in this singing.
I've heard other reactors focus on the technical aspects but that is not the true beauty of this song. You picked up on it in the very first minute how it seems like a dialogue between the singers and the God Almighty. It is the total surrender and complete devotion that sets this apart from most other songs. You are so right that there is music and then there is this.
Lovely song, Frank. I'm from the herd of Brazilian fans and I am glad for this awesome discovery. I always believed there are plenty of interesting and diverse artists out there. You are doing a great job here. Keep going! Haha
Well the poetry they are singing is a spiritual.. But Don't compare them with messenger because they aren't. Messenger were noble people like Noah, Ibraham, Moses, Jesus And Muhammad peace be upon them all. These 2 and us are just part of the nation of last messenger & prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h)
Just felt like commenting this for all who don't understand the lyrics.. "Chaap tilak sab cheenii re mose naina milaake" It somewhat translates to.. 'you have taken or snatched from me, everything, all the traces of my identity, by looking in my eyes/locking eyes with me(naina milaake) :)
You're one of the few reactors who is able to appreciate both the technical and the spiritual aspects of Indian and Pakistani classical music, which is often structured as a song in the form of a prayer. You hit the nail on the head - the process of mastering both the emotional intricacies and technical segments of such compositions is itself considered a form of worship, requiring DECADES of practice and dedication.
I have seen almost all reactions on this video by westerner. You are the only one who felt the emotion of this song like us people who understand this song. Not the technicality, nor the singer, nor the music, but the seamless blend of it all that aspires us to communicate with the Divine.
Ustad rahat Fateh Ali Khan🙏no matter what genre I listen I always come back to ustad's songs em inspired from my teen days till now..it's his uncle's song actually one and only ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali khan.......as Uncle as nephew....legends.....love to all pak people....mad respect from Nepal🇳🇵Jai shree krishna
As an indian, we are enemies of pakistanis. But I don’t know why this appreciation makes me proud in my heart. We are like two brothers who fought for father’s will. But still we love each other deep in our hearts.
The amazing thing is, this wasn't even supposed to be the final version. It was the first practice recording session, and it turned out so good that the producer decided to use this instead of any other takes. Btw Abida Parveen is a legend!
Abida Parveen is indeed a living legend just like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Rahat has also gained the same status as of his uncle due to his amazing vocals, both here are singing a poem of 14 century sufi poet Amir Khusro
This is not an interpretation but a poem. The poem was written by amir khusro. Later the poem was sung as song.(Sufi music). I love it .. I do .. so pure ❤️
This is the best commentary ever on this genre of songs. I have never heard anyone appreciate and decode this music in the way you did. Thanks for sharing your insights.
Incredible reaction, I struggle to put into words how I feel when I hear this song and you said everything I feel so perfectly. Absolutely great video!
Frank, I don't know if I enjoyed Rahat and Abida more or your shocked reaction to the song. You are right this style of singing is an attempt to connect with God. It is Sufi music and it has its roots in the mystical aspect of Islam. There are videos of little Rahat sitting next to his uncle, Nusret, practicing for hours. So, it is a technique that was perfected in over 40 years or so. It is quite difficult to do. I am not sure if Rahat is training another family member. This art form can die out if not passed down the generations.
Wow !! You are the first one to preference Jeff and Nusrat...others have never mentioned their connection... in one video, Jeff said of Nusrat.. " he's my Elvis" ... Super reaction honey x
ALL pakistan coke studio songs have impeccable english translation if you turn them on. It's disappointing to watch someone listen to a song and not understand the beautiful meaning.
Amazing transparent reaction. You’re obviously overwhelmed by their expertise but in any case if there’s any room left try reacting to ‘Rang’ by Rahat and late Amjad Sabri. You’re in for a surprise.
Nusrat was Jeff Bukleys Elvis, he loved him and rightly so. Abida Parveen is a female version of Nusrat man, she may not go as high as Rahat but she puts emotions in songs like no other, you should check her out more top, Will Smiths wife Jada Smith is a massive fan of her too along with million sin this region. Please react to Tajdare-e-Haram by Atif Aslam from COke Studios he is a very talented singer too with songs of multiple genres not a Qawali singer but great one. Coke Studios has alot of these Sufi songs also turn on subtitles as they contribute alot to these song and Coke Studios have it on almost all songs.
This is Sufi Music from Pakistan (india)....this song was written over 700 years ago, Sufi music is made to envoke deep feelings and emotions.....and this is a great exampleof that.......
I couldn't resist posting my comments. I'm very happy to listen the adjectives and phrases you used to describe the notes and voice. Very happy you have very refined sense of music. And facial expressions😍 are rather comprehensive than your words. Enjoy cinnamon TEA.
Indeed, you really need to check out more coke studio. You'll find quite a few gems in the Pakistani music industry. Loving your passion for music though, good stuff
Respect for your insight of Qawwali song's spiritual nature, of energy that transcends dimensions (within or outwards). Rendered beautifully by renowned Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan through their classical artistry and mastery of improvisation of (alap), dialogue lyrics, ("sargam") repetition of notes, and ("taan") "pull" of quick passages using vowels. This (700 year old) famous Kalam (poem) written by Amir Khusru a 14th-century Sufi mystic in the Braj Bhasha, or northern Awadi dialects from which Urdu and Hindi languages evolved. The Kalam(poem) "Chhaap Tilak Sab Chheeni"has been sung as a Qawwali (a form of Sufi Islamic devotional singing) throughout South Asia for hundreds of years, due to the resonance of its melodic and mystical lyrics, . World music connects humanity without boundaries. Love Jeff Buckley's music, and his respect and admiration for Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. RIP. Peter Gabriel & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Passion, amazing!. Also Karsh Kale, Sting, Anoushka Shankar. Peace.
So glad to see your reaction. Really appreciate your work 👍🏼 its like almost you reached at the point where you get what is going on there in actual. This is awesome "Sufi Kalam- Chaap Tilak". Thanks to these legends and Coke.S. #MytalentedPakistan ♥️✨
I feel so proud, emotional and happy when I see the reacts on my favorite song. I have listened it more than 10000 times easily and still cant get over it.
Absolutely loved your reaction. Since you are exploring this type of music may I suggest Mundari also from Coke Studio Pakistan. You can thank me after.
Hey, Frank thanks for such a thoughtful reaction. No better interpretation could have been that what you said ''IT IS AN ATTEMPT EACH TIME TO REACH THE POWER HIGH ABOVE'' I Lost it there honestly....And i also feel the power above is so mighty and vast that only with this level of Purity, manners and burning energy you could at least attempt to make that connection.... You are an Amazing human being.
Personally i can't relax with this song i can only cry, it touches on deep and desperate emotions.😬🥺
Longing
Read the lyrics in English this song makes everyone with emotions cry you are not alone

No instrument could do that!
i love you too :D
Worship for the ears. A plea to the author of existence.
absolutely....
This is out of any music note for 99% of the singers what Rahat is hitting on except his uncle the one and only Ustad (Mastero) Nusrat Fateh Ali khan
The Sarangi can, it’s fretless, uses bowed gut stings, and is played with the nail/cuticle allowing you to do exactly the type of gamak you hear in this singing.

Beautifully said ❤️ Khuda ko paane ki justaju
Anindita, you have nailed it.
sufism at it core!
as a vocal student i tend to pick up technique and stuff but i especially listen it on audio to truelly enjoy!
Fun fact: this was a rehearsal and they didn’t record the final. After this recording everyone was like “you can’t get better than this.”
Lovely song, Frank. I'm from the herd of Brazilian fans and I am glad for this awesome discovery. I always believed there are plenty of interesting and diverse artists out there. You are doing a great job here. Keep going! Haha
Bro check out coke studio Pakistan it is completely on the next level live singing with hundreds of years old instruments
It's amazing Fernando
it is not just music it is a spiritual experience, not just singers they are messengers.

My left ear enjoyed your commentary 😀
😂
First i thought my right headphone is not working.
I changed my headphone 🤣
The poem is about 750 years old. But every singer makes his own arrangement of the song. This arrangement is new and unique.
Hey Frank , please react to "Naina moorey " Coke studio Pakistan!!

Beautiful! Reminds me of Arabic songs ... maybe the musical instruments.
The language is Vraj. I am not sure though.
It's nothing like Arabic music. ...far from it.
Sufi muslim music from South Asia
The language is classical Urdu
