  • Cyril's uncle was the notorious Theophilus, a ruthless and fiercely competitive churchman - and the old manhood handpicked his nephew to be his successor as bishop of Alexandria. Cyril learned from Theophilus how to orchestrate an international incident and carry it through to the victorious end. But he was very much his own man: a towering intellect, the mastermind of the Council of Ephesus, a prodigious commentator on the Scriptures, and a saint of a different sort.

Theophilus, certainly a man who shows us one great truth of our faith. Place your trust not in princes.
Also a more generic one, the more things change the more they stay the same.
Bad bishops existed at start of Our Blessed Lord`s Passion then in the early Church, in the 1100s, and even now, even in the same ways.
All of our advancement it is not ours, but owed to the grace of the Lord, without that grace we would be no better tham demons, every single one of us. It is His Light we shine in and in His hands we are moulded, in His Refiner`s Fire purified, and in His Sacred Waters made clean. Walk therefore in all humility knowing that our God opposed the prideful and self-reliance is a sinful feature of the fallen soul, not a perfection.
God have mercy upon us and grant us eyes to see and ears to hear. Through Our Blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
