- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said on Wednesday that Israel is obstructing the process of aid deliveries through the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza and added that “this is part of how they exert pressure on the issue of releasing the hostages”.

The Rafah crossing has always been an obstacle for the Palestinians in Gaza, mostly because of Egyptian complicity and/or fear of Israeli and US pressure. But the Egyptian regime is not entirely helpless as it likes to claim. Even a corrupt dictator like Mubarak knew how to keep some leverage to negotiate some relief to Gaza during wars. Not because he had a good heart, but he knew that keeping the Palestinian cause barely alive would keep him needed by the US.
My point is, Sisi is just complicit.. and a short-sighted idiot, at that.

The US sends over a billion usd of military aid to Egypt annually. But it’s a bribe and a means to make sure the dictators stay in power and to make sure Egypt is strong enough to support Israel and keep people from crossing the border. They don’t care what happens to the rest of the country. If it weren’t for the threat of Israel at the border there would be little need for much military aid.

So Egyptians need to stop thinking about the US aid like a handout and need to understand that the US pays that money so Egypt can play nice with Israel. Egypt needs to threaten the US and Israel whenever they are not following the treaty that they will void it which neither Israel nor the US want to do (like when the US gives Egypt only half the military aid they are giving to Israel which is supposed to be equal). Egypt only has to follow that 1979 treaty to get the money and if they try to force Egypt to follow anything else then Egypt can tell them to eat dust.
