A lot of Band-Maid myth about this one, so I'll let the band summarize it.
Kanami(K): Recently the composing of songs is started by me making a demo, but the timing before this song I was in a slump. I couldn't decide what kind of song to make. I wanted to take care of the pillar of our songs which is hard rock, but we have also received opinions on making songs more pop or melodious. So I decided to have a talk with the band members. Actually in our 5 years it was the first time all the band members conferred about a song together. There we brainstormed and decided we wanted to make a song that was easy to sing in Karaoke. Image like a song from our first album [MAID IN JAPAN] from our indies days. So this was not going back to our major debut days, but really back to our roots.
    - The last phrase it pretty shocking. I was surprised this was allowed as a lyric.(laughs)
Kobato: It was OK po. I submitted it meekly po(laughs). I didn't want to end the song popishly. If so there is no need for the current BAND-MAID to make such a song. So I wanted to have aggressiveness left here and attacked po. Actually this song had many more English phrases, but I changed most of it to Japanese. But left the last phrase English for it's impact.

I love Band-Maid's "Start Over" because I'm into great writing, playing and well-constructed songs. But the jewelry store ad MV... not so much. Songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile can help them more than most of their catalog to become more approachable and widely accepted by the general public.
Look at the tens to hundreds of millions of views idol, hip hop and pop receive. You don't have to be hard core anything to bob and weave to a lot of these manufactured, ah... "songs?" I'm afraid the kind of songs I love, Band-Maid, The Warning and Jinjer type songs, will remain a tiny, tiny niche -- like a sea slug in the ocean of teaming pop life.
BTW - Start Over sounded awesome in their online live OOJ Concert. And it gets great fan reaction as seen here in Amsterdam: :ua-cam.com/video/AGyWuUm0SIA/v-deo.html (Fanvid thanks to Vladimir Chupin)

People say this is a "response" to them "going soft" but it came out after World Domination so I have no idea how anyone can possibly think that. There's a lot of wishful fanfiction about this band 😆
Here's the real story (thanks to t-shinji for the translation of this interview):
Kanami: I always write demos and send them to my bandmates, but this time I couldn’t decide what kind of song to write, because of hitting a kind of slump, so all of us gathered to have a meeting. Then Sai-chan (Saiki) proposed like “How about reviewing our roots?”
    - What do you mean by your roots?
Kanami: The first mini-album we released, Maid in Japan, had many songs a little closer to J-pop. We listened to all those songs once again, and got an inspiration about what we used to be in the beginning. Also, we wanted to have a song more and more people can sing, so we were conscious of making it karaoke-friendly.
Kobato: Band-Maid songs are often hard to sing on karaoke (laughs). We thought it might be nice to have a song everyone can sing more easily, po.
Kanami: We thought we had established our own hard rock style pretty well in our last album, and in order to achieve our goal of “world domination”, we wanted our song to be sung by a wider range of people.
    And the IDGAF?
"So do the lyrics reflect your journey up to now?"
Kobato: That’s right, po. However, just going straight is far from what we are now, so I wanted to show we’ve come here while overcoming obstacles, in order to have something more resonating with ourselves. That’s why I included “Bringing up this peace sign / I don’t give a fxxk” in the lyrics. Whether it’s fxxk in peace or peace in fxxk, we want to go ahead while taking the opposite things positively.

Did they? I know people said they'd gone too soft when they released "Endless Story" but the Maids quickly followed that with"RINNE" so that put that argument to bed. Now the important Q is "When exactly did Akane stop wearing her her Tiny Hat"? I know she was wearing it for part of the 2018 european tour but when B-M played London in 2019 it was missing. 😔 I never got to see Akane wearing her Tiny Hat, Tiny Hat :(

This song adds a completely different genre to their musical caperbilities. Any other band done such an intro? Lovely backing call and responce section with vocals between Saiki and Miku. Jazzy/funky? fine with that- always up for some kind of fusion in music.

I can only think of piano intro on Queen 'Death On Two Legs' 😁 And what an album, A Night At The Opera...every song a different style. No wonder I love the Maid's classy songwriting variety. They're in the tradition of eclectic rock and song matters more than genre. Tailor-made for me...every track they've done.

You have been hearing Kanami on keyboards many times. She records it as a backing track usually though there is footage of her on keyboard in concert as well. Every sound you hear was made by the band whether pre recorded or not. As to I don't give a fuck, people. Ok? Saiki added that herself in answer to the several "critics" at the time who complained about the band going soft. Thus, her impromptu response. Later you will hear Rin-ne. Reincarnation. And as that is one of their absolutely heavier numbers Sai-chan opines at the end of that one and again to the "critics" It's sink or swim. Shut up! What do you expect from a punk band?

Well, I guess that's about it for the creepy-crawly as a fan of Band-Maid. 😆
Saiki's last sentence, the cover for this single and also the song itself, which lacks some of the Band-Maid we know (e.g. a Kanami solo) and the video for it, I think were designed from the get-go to poke fun at the naysayers who thought they had become too poppy. And that they are not too shy for such largely designed stuff, we know at the latest since various April Fool's jokes.
They have a sense of humour I can easily live with. And even on purpose, they can't pull off a bad song. :)

Hey SBR, I hope you are having a great day! There are actually some videos of Kanami playing the piano on Ohrenje's You Tube channel, she is playing Band Maid songs by herself. In one video she is teaching her sister how to play "Daydreaming" on the piano. On another note, it appears that you have become a Maidiac, that's definitely not a bad thing, it just shows you have good taste in music. I'm not complaining, I'm happy to listen to Band Maid anytime.

To be honest, at the time, I didn't fully understand why so many Band-Maid fans were angry against "Start over" - I had just discovered the band back then and wasn't listening to them in chronological order, so "Start Over" didn't seemed out of place besides early tracks like "Love Passion Matador". But while following you on your chronological Band-Maid path, I understand better: "Start over" comes just after such a powerfull (and nearly exclusively) hard-rock album that it had to shock some people. The cringy video (I mean the acting parts! coming from a fiction where Start Over was used ) didn't help too. But most people learned to love it afterwards, partly because the live version was great, and then because Band-Maid kept on diversifying their sound with the next album. And c'mon: if only for Saiki's last words, it's a gem 😄.
