You might have heard that you can’t trust anything on Wikipedia. If that’s the case, then why do professional fact checkers often use it? In this video, we break down the basics of how to use Wikipedia wisely.
Based on research with professional fact checkers, the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum from the Stanford History Education Group provides resources to help students become better consumers of digital information.
Wikipedia is fantastic for a quick summarisation of a topic you dont understand yet, and as a place for learning. There is an insane amount of information on Wikipedia, completely for free, put on there by volunteers. Many of those people just so happen to be people with years of knowledge in that subject.
Wikipedia should not be used as a source in an essay, as it is in itself a summarisation of information, that has probably been simplified somewhat (Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia after all), and can at times be out of date. It is a fantastic way to find sources and leads to further information that you might not know where to look for, as there is a list of (usually archived) sources at the bottom - that someone else has already gone through the effort of finding for you!
Finally someone says this! I'm so tired of all the wikipedia hate
I mean, Wikipedia still is not a reliable source. Encyclopedia Britannica literally existed in 1768. Wikipedia’s co-founder says it’s not a good source. Google literally uses Wikipedia. Encyclopedia Britannica is a scholarly source, actually made by professionals. It was originally a book called the same name.
@@ShipsandGames it has like 1 less mistake than google and I dont have to pay and atleast wikipedia is current. Rip bozo🤡👌
@@ShipsandGamesdid you watch the video it shows wiki on averages only has one more mistake.
Wiki is free also, no way I’m paying money for one less mistake. Wouldn’t pay money either way
@@Ma1q444 depends on the users
It's better to also look for sources not listed in Wikipedia for any particular subject too!
Love your work SHEG. I've been helping turn the wikipedia ban around. Can you please edit the transcript at 2.17 'and fact checkers don't just examined one source' to 'examine'!
Can you please make a video about Encyclopedia Britannica, it seems like there is some bias.

But there is no using Wikipedia correctly
Step 1: DON'T USE WIKIPEDIA.
That is all!
In my country Wiki is a lot more often associated with something essential and trust-worthy. So it depends on the culture as well. But anyway, critical thinking is the most important to have in this case, that the school didn't teach me, as well as a lot of other important things.
How to use Wikipedia wisely
Step 1: don't
Why not?
@@chuckscott4661 I'll let you figure it out
@@sentinel_nightcrawlerfunny your reply was hidden
@@Sillimant_ I can see mine. I don't know about your end.
But there is no using Wikipedia correctly
There definetly is
then you definitely need to research very long for a reliable information so basically if you're in a argument or anything that really need you to response immediately just use Wikipedia or if you're crazy enough research the thing you talking about that's how you use Wikipedia responsible
@@memelobby0maybe once upon a time, but at no time in the last decade has that been possible
