Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 59 | Our worst injury! Paneling the gable ends + Window framing and trim

  • Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
  • In this episode, we plane 1x3 rough cut cedar boards and we use them as paneling on the interior gable ends. Before we could finish, the ladder broke and sent Nick falling 6 feet to the stone floor. He suffered an injury that stopped our progress for a week, and will slow our progress for weeks to come. After a week break, we got back to work. Our first task: reinforce the ladder! Once done, we were able to finish the paneling and finished all the framing and trim around the 2nd floor windows.
Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

When you built the ladder, I thought the rungs should have been mortised in the rails. That said you are young and will heal quickly. Nice work, you have a beautiful home.

glad you didn't get a more serious injury! once you're back at home, I'd suggest buying a metal ladder (I know, but it won't fall apart), and then making a garage nearer the house so if something more serious _does_ happen to either of you, it'll be easier to reach a hospital.

sorry about your fall, been there, fyi from an old-timer..... you should use nails instead of screws when building ladders. it's common practice in the states and an Osha requirement. reason being that nails have a much higher sheer strength than screws. you can bend a nail but it won't snap like a screw. i personally like the draw strength of screws so i use both when building ladders, hope this helps. love your content and i'll be praying for you both and a speedy recovery

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! A few months ago I fell about ten feet off a ladder while alone in the cabin I have been fixing up. My head missed a beam by mere inches and I landed on the floor in the one spot where there wasn’t any lumber or tools laying around. Walked it off, praying thanks to God that I came out of it with only a grapefruit-sized bruise on my thigh.

Back when I was in my late 20s I fell and broke my arm (riding a unicycle) the surgery was called a radial reduction. They installed a bar and 4 screws, thru the next year it always had a dull pain and just never went away. My Doctor recommended that they remove the bar and screw's for a few reasons and the pain was gone immediately after the took them out. Best thing I ever did

It’s awful when you hurt yourself. Everything happens so quickly and it always looks stupid when you look back on it.
When I was renovating my house. I fell 10ft, I snapped my wrist, fractured my pelvis and placed my shoulder out of joint. I was on my own when this happened and I had to crawl downstairs, make a 999 call and had to lift myself up to open the front door.
So I do sympathise with your situation. Stay safe👍👍

After reading the description of this video, you can imagine that I was quite concerned, my first thought was a ladder failure, I have been worrying about our usage on that ladder, and not knowing if you have been keeping a close eye on it. But as I watch the video, I kept hoping that the injury would be no more smashed thumb now that may have been lost due to the injury, but no such luck, not that that would be lucky but much less than a broken arm. I’m glad everything went well with the hospital visit and the surgery and that you will be just fine. I am very happy that you two are taking a trip, a little time off to enjoy life away from the cabin. Enjoy the trip, and I will be looking very forward to your next video.

That was a pretty good time at the hospital, In UK all I did was cut my thumb pretty bad I had to be transferred 25 miles to another hospital and wait all day and most of the night before I had my thumb stitched up, I then had to walk back to my own town. The queue consisted of three people in front of me, The rest of the wait was down to Royalty, it was Princess Diana's Wedding, all the staff was mesmerised by her beauty and could not function till it was all over. Good luck with your work.

Buon lavoro Nick e Maela. Siete fantastici!

    Amazing Nick and Maela!
I watched all your videos with fascination. You are amazing! You chose a beautiful place and left for a great challenge. It was difficult to imagine that a young couple could build such a beautiful and cozy log cabin with their own hands.
The videos gave me a lot of peace and serenity. Impressive how you work. I was curious to know your diet to have so much energy and disposition. You messed with me. I am more observant of the things around me.
I was surprised to see Nick in the hospital. After always working very carefully on the construction of the roof and the upper parts, it was right inside the hut, when you can't imagine the possible risks, that accidents occur.
I'm rooting for Nick's recovery and that the young couple can continue with their project very soon.
As my grandmother used to say, it is by falling that you learn to walk.
    Health, peace and much success.
    You deserve.

That ladder was a major concern for me watching this from the comforts of my modern world. Your both are very durable robust individuals I really admire your hard work and tenacious mentality. Glad you got taken care of. Gotta be scary that far out. Stay safe. Love your show.

I'll wait for the section where you cover the insulation on the inside of the house. Dangerous to inhale it. Love from Sweden

Hope you're healing fully. I was washing down the sailboat on July 21st and slipped entering in the cockpit. I broke a couple of ribs, but like you, I realize how much worse it could have been. Love what you both are accomplishing together. Cheers from the Broughtons.
