  • No gel plate, no problem. Learn how to use plastic bags from your recycling, to make "gel" or monoprints. The process is the same as gel printing and fun. You can use ANY acrylic paint but I have found craft paint to work the best.
Used in this video: brayer, bubblewrap, Golden acrylics- heavy bodied and fluid, Martha Stewart craft paint, Liquitex matte medium, cardboard, old magazine.
NO EXCUSES just paint a page. Discover why journals and paint help us all feel better. No matter what you call it, a sketchbook, art journal, junk journal, mixed media, paint can’t color the page without you! Use your fingers, a brush or just smoosh the paint from a tube it’s All Art! Join me on this journey!

This reminds me of how I started w gellis last year.
I saw a content creator who doesn’t talk use it-among several other methods and I was so taken by the outcome of what she made.
I didn’t know what the plate was and thought it was just some splat mat of some sort so I got the brayer and paint and some random plastic squares and off I went😅
I could tell right away that my “plate” was not what she was using but the prints were still so exciting to make!! And really weren’t that bad either.
Of course I found the right materials (plus a million other things that I never knew I needed 😂) and now looking back, I realize I was still learning things about the technique.
This video makes me want to revisit non-gelli printing now that I can really compare and contrast.
    Very cool!

This reminds me of Dan Tirel. His monoprinting technique is without a gelly plate.

Such a compliment thank you! Dan does use plastic bags. Love his work. Traditionally (before there were gelli plates) monoprinting used smooth surfaces like wood, plexiglass, plastic sheets, or other such substrates.

Thank you so very much. I can't afford a gelli plate but I really want to give this a try. Do you have a recommendation for brayer? I went to Michael's website but so many pull up and I have no idea which would be best. Thank you for this video.

Thank you for watching. I hope you have fun playing with this. :) I use the Speedball brand but you could try using an old gift card. Anything that rolls like a brayer- the very small ones used to paint walls or a tiny rolling pin from a kids play baking set. I'm not sure how it would come out but it could be fun to try that! Also, you don't need name brands sometimes the off brands work just as well. I love when things come out wonky because it makes for interesting art! Have fun and let me know how you make out.
