Top of the Wall! Building an Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Wilderness, Ep 11
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 вер 2024
- I install the top course of logs on two sides of the off grid log cabin, including the heaviest logs yet, and then move the woodstove to the final location in the cabin where it will not be in the way as I finish the last two walls. It's been a harsh February, with temperatures well below average, above average snowfall and once a week, high temperatures with rain and freezing rain followed by flash freezes.

There's a man in the Canadian wilderness, playing around with wood in the middle of winter by himself, building a cabin in harshest circumstances and enjoying himself emensely with his trusted dog. Every time I think of that it makes me smile.
@Krzysiek Mazanek No probably! For sure!
Immensely
I find it so relaxing
And he installs his stove on top of ice and snow and hangs his pots for all the birds to see.🌲🌲🌲
a blessed life. I hope he won't be affected by the incoming 3rd world war...
We figured you were doubling down on getting things done. These last few years of the world going crazy makes me consider your way of life less and less of an extreme choice. You make sense. It's becoming increasingly clear that being self reliant is what we should all be pursuing. Thanks, Shawn, for leading the way!
Well spoken
Exactly!!! Keep it up, Shawn!!!
Come on spring
True
I can tell you that he must have a fine and very forgiving wife to do what he has done. Most men would have to get divorced to chase a dream like his.
Was starting to worry something had happened! So glad to see you back. A lot of us live and dream of what we would like to do through you, your episodes are some thing that I look forward to every week, it sounds crazy but one of the few things I can count on in this world to take me away from everything that is going on in this world. If you knew how many of us would like to be up there helping you even if we couldn’t keep up with you I would still enjoy being up working with you
Congrats on the progress. Still wish you would wear a hard hat. You should do a bootcamp for young men to teach them what hard work really looks like.
Well said !!
I was feeling the same way.
So true I feel the same way ! I look forward to these videos and the peace I feel watching. So much is negative these days it’s nice to watch something positive 👍☺️
It struck me today, while watching that we are looking at a modern day Noah. A man spending months on end preparing his wilderness ark for his beloved family, while the world is preparing to burn itself down. I salute your vision, your sacrifice and your expression of love.
Glad to see you back! Hope you are doing okay with everything going on in Canada.
On a positive note, it’s been a reminder of the importance of this lifestyle to my family and me.
My daughter and her husband have thought about the same life style for a few years. Now more than ever! I hope they make room for me now that I'm retired! 😊
@@MySelfReliance Glad too. Why not place wood stove in basement to melt upper floor?
It is always amazing to see not only the progress that you make, but the quality of your work and the depth of your vision, doubly so when we remember that you do all of this whilst recording it in such stunning video. By next week you will have over 2 million subs, many very well deserved congratulations. Slainté.
You forgot to add that he helps his daughter with her cabin too, wonder if the guy sleeps????🤔
He's amazing alright! And it seems his builds are getting better and better! 🥇
Well put. I frequently wonder how he is able to do these difficult things by himself but also capture them so well.
Great to see you hard at the cabin regardless of the cold and snow. Impressive work as ever, be safe buddy.
Getting those top logs in place is utterly EPIC. Think doctors could prescribe watching your channel as a natural way to destress and relax instead of conventional blood pressure Rx. Thanks for providing us with a perfect retreat from the craziness of the world these days.
Exact;y!
Completely agree
Amen👍
So true
Oh no! I tense up watching...no relaxation here....
So glad to see Cali my grand daughter -4-loves the doggie and I love your self reliance ,so glad to see you with your fresh start removed from intrusive people and all other impediments to your peace of mind.
Shawn reminds me of the ancient Egyptians, building their great pyramids with simple tools, levers and mathematics. It's a lost art, and judging by the number of people (including myself) who view this channel and love his lifestyle, his epic task of singlehandedly building a home in the wilderness connects to us all to the land he's building in. Just by sharing his videos, I sometimes feel like I've taken a walk in nature even though I live in the concrete jungle of a major urban city.

I guess you can tell we all missed you and Cali. I get lost in your world of surviving out in the elements and yes Self Reliance is what its all about at the end of the day. I Thank you for sharing your life with us. Looking forward to the next episode. Take care Shawn.
Hi 👋 Donna, how are you?
The last few weeks have been so disturbing and stressful this post was a god send. Good to see more and more wall erected. Glad to see you healthy
Those logs are massive! It's really impressive how you maneuver them into place! Your perseverance is inspiring.
Not to take anything away from Shawn and his incredible undertaking but have you seen Nik Rijavec and his build. Some of his logs are at least double the size.
@@johnmichaelkarma True. However Shawn's like double his age, and more likely that he's doing his work alone and not getting help off-camera(though this could be the reality behind all the youtube channels).
@@VCthaGOATdunker Sure don't want to argue, though Shawn is older but not twice as old at 51 he also has far more muscle than lanky Nik. The point if any is what can be done when a strong will and ingenuity is in play. I have watched Nk's build from the start and am convinced he does most all by himself and shows when he does have help. Two great men for sure. I'm 70 now, looking back a little some of the things I've done alone and still do would impress many. Also what seems likely is that trees that are available to each man are of different sizes.
You are the most hardworking man and so consistent and determined. You are also a man or precision and thinks and plans your work. What I really like watching the video is he doesn't talke much cos the work is self-explanatory and is nice to watch without all the unnecessary commentary. Let the work show forth. Good job.
So good to see you and Cali !
Made me smile to see you hanging your cooking utensils!!! Progress!!! Also seeing that long log fall into place was literally awesome!!!
I am so happy that you posted a video today. I know you only through the Internet but somehow feel connected to you and your family and worry when you don't post a vlog each week. Perhaps we connect with you because of your desire to be self-reliant, your gentle nature, your advice about life and living, your concern for the environment, and your work ethic. Thank you for sharing your incredibly inspirational journey with us!
Hi 👋 Nanigoose, how are you?
Shawn you have inspired me to build... I have a wealth of knowledge just following you for 2 years.. Watching the build, with your insight I feel confident to get started in the spring.. Here on the east coast of Canada in Newfoundland it's much warmer than N. ontario.. less snow, fortunately my logs are much thinner. I have been stressed that I may not be able to handle them.. I now have an advantage after watching this be done alone.. Self Reliance is an understatement. you rock Mr. James.. Cheers
Watching that long log fall into place was so satisfying, I can only imagine how satisfying it was for you.
Glad to see you back at it Shawn. You've been a motivation for me and it's finally happening. I'm heading north with my last load, sold my house and heading to my cabin!!! Hope all is well! your getting closer to working on the roof!
You work really hard to provide for your family. You do such wonderful builds. Your home will last for generations. You know it’s done right with no shortcuts. Your providing a much safer environment. Calli is such a great dog. She’s a good companion for you out and here alone. Take care. Stay safe and healthy. Thank you for the build update. The scenery is beautiful.
Great opening shot with the log falling into place! The deer peeking around the tree is priceless. You're making good progress despite the weather. Stay safe and well. See you soon.
I don’t think there are enough words to express your determination, tenacity, & the way you work at something you love & you show the way for everyone. My husband & I believe in self reliance & working to keep life simple but we’re not close to sharing the skills & knowledge our forefathers learned. My grandparents were rich in survival skills also using their sweat & strong backs to work a 50 acre farm during the depression years. Like you, I respected them greatly. I’m thankful for you. And the number of how many subscribers you have to believe in what you do also. Stay safe & God bless you & your family.
So glad to see your post today. You are one tough guy! You’re also a wealth of common sense and determination. Inspiring to me and apparently 1.99 million others! God’s speed on your cabin, etc.!
Praying your back stays strong! Love watching you build!
Shawn I’ve been watching your videos for 2-3years and I’m just amazed at what you have accomplished. I thought the other cabin was perfect but understood why it didn’t work out and I hope this will be your forever home. I hope you’re keeping a written journal for whomever finds this cabin 200years from now. Stay safe out there and thank you for sharing your story with us. ❤️
I'm so glad to see you and Cali again. I really miss you both a lot when I don't see you every week. But when I see what you have been doing this two weeks I'm impressed. Glad you are ok with all what's been going on in Canada. We have a hard time here in Norway too, but not as bad as in your country. I'm praying for your safety. Please take care ❤
Eg bodde i Norge mange aar. I Norge er livet mye enklere en her I USA og Canada. Dere tro kansje at dere har det vanskelig. Tro meg eller ikke, i USA er det knalhardt. The harsh weather and you still go out there to build your dream. I’m impressed at how well those trees that the lift cables attached too are holding up with those heavy logs as you lift. Real hard work there with the top logs. And the deer at the end with the fox. Another great video Shawn.
So impressive! The strength, toughness, and patience this requires are all off the charts, yet you get it done. So awesome 👍👊💪
Your first buildings were awesome. Trial and error in that location has prepared you for greater things in this one. God has blessed you with many talents.

Hi 👋 Jeanne, how are you?
🌹💖🙏
I like so many others were worried about you, so good to see you back. Stay safe, blessings to the family!
Your ingenuity is great, I've been a carpenter/ builder 30+ years have built just about everything, and a lot by myself, but those logs with only chain hoist, hats off to you my brother.
Looks so peaceful there. When I watch your videos it brings me 30 minutes of serenity that I need in my life. Thank you Shawn
You're amazing, Shawn! Missed watching you! Glad to know you're well and continuing on, doing what you do. God bless you and keep you safe and strong.
So enjoyed the setting moon shot, and the peek a boo deer.
its amazing to me how good you are with working with those big logs all by yourself and they fit together so perfectly when youre finished with them. beautiful work.
I just want to say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE ! I couldn't remember if I had told you on prior videos so I want to say it now.
I just love all your videos. You show a patience I could never achieve.
Thank you so much for opening your life up to me and others.
I shook my head a lot watching this one. Stay safe out there, Shawn. You continue to amaze us all.
INCREDIBLE! I am utterly amazed at how much one man can do alone in the woods...I think Dick Proenneke would be too! Thanks 4 sharing. Health and God Bless!
THERE YOU ARE....... So good to see you. I was hoping the reason you were not uploading was to stay busy with your cabin build. So good to see you, Jimmy. now let's see what is new with you.....

Your home is going to be beautiful, even more so because you are the one who had the vision, designed it, and built it. You and your family are blessed. In the troubled times we are now living, we need to recognise the positive and be thankful. I'm not usually this wordy in my everyday life, I have been known to be a bit dry with my remarks, but this video has touched me, you deserve to be recognized.
*It's really looking like a Log Cabin now that the walls are almost complete. I'm beginning to realize this is a much larger cabin than what you built before as well.*
I just realized that as well. I knew it was bigger, but this is quite substantial.
NOT ONLY LARGER...BIGGER GIGANTIC LOGS TOO...😱😱😱
@@fredbasset3379 it's just really impressive.
This is about as big as he could make it by himself under these circumstances. Very impressive.
The tortoise and hare and the patience of Job come to mind. As a viewer from the first or near the beginning, this episode leaves me in awe and speechless. God bless you and all your family, especially including Cali, for your contribution to society.
This may be an odd comment but it was so refreshing to watch you struggling with that window frame. This only increase my admiration proving that you're only human and can make mistakes. And the screeching sounds of those massive logs against the snow were terrorific. i´m giving you a standing ovation from the side of my couch. Thank you for sharing!
I'm so happy you are almost done with the walls. I love it when you get to the roof. You've got a icey mess going on. Alot of snow too but it looks so beautiful. I tried using a pick axe in my driveway to make a trench. Didn't work! It didn't budge the ice an it was to heavy for a old woman. I tried both sides of it till my arms couldn't take anymore. Gave up an went in the house. Your ahead on this cabin. Your floor is already done. I watched Viva Frei yesterday and you really got a compliment! Tom Marazzo was on an they were talking about watching TV and Tom said you were his favorite show. Your my favorite too. He was such a nice an smart guy. You should have him for a visit when your cabins done. The greenhouse looked cool. Thank you. FREEDOM YEAHHHH

So glad to see you are alright. Its amazing how much you gotten done with the house with the weather being so bad. I think its going to be beautiful your family should be so proud of you 👏❤
The BEST ASMR for relaxation. The rhythmic tapping, scraping, scribing, and chopping create a wilderness space in my room. I enjoy both channels, but this one is the best!
Glad to see that you are doing ok. Looks like you have accomplished a lot since your last video! Despite the cold, the blizzards you have done much! Stay safe and healthy!
I pray God willing next winter you will be warm and cozy in your new home building shelves and furniture as the snow falls and wind blows outside!

Very productive in your progress Shawn. The cinematography was beautiful. Keep up the great work Shawn. Have a wonderful safe weekend.💯❤️👍🏾😀🙋🏽♀️✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
Logs are big, so huge your viewers too, impressive still i cant imagine how perfectionist a man can built a unique cabin alone in the wilderness, oh... its a matter of patience and perseverance. I'm glad to see your ok log cabin is looking awesome I love those big logs .my boys watch your videos with me every Saturday morning .thanks see you soon
Your progress is looking good. Stay safe and warm
As I sit in my warm brick house and watch you move those logs around and place them so well matching there is nothing else to be said. You're an amazing builder. I was worried that something had happened that tor 2 weeks we hadn't heard from! Something did.... you worked you hands off!
Very cool to see the top logs go on Shawn and it must have given you a little boost to hang the camp oven and pots and pans in place. Amazing work. Watching from Australia 🇦🇺
Early congratulations on 2 Million subscribers Shawn!! Looks like hard work is paying off in more ways than one! Cabin is looking great!
I have to say how impressive this is. I watched your channel before you even built the first cabin, outdoor kitchen, sauna…. Now a whole new homestead. The size of the logs on this cabin are so much larger it seems. And doing it on your own. Just outstanding! Plus you have a green thumb in gardening. I will ask the same question I asked the very first time I commented years ago…..Do you have a brother?? Great job!
Three sisters….
I can build stuff. LOL.
3 sisters? I have one older brother, no sisters.... do you want to trade? Just kidding! 🙃 I ♥️ my brother and wouldn't trade him for anything! He and his wife live in a cabin on the Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, Minnesota. (Close to the Canadian border) Thank You for another AMAZING video! Your new home is really coming along, even with the way the weather has been! Cali looks just as sweet as ever! ♥️ I hope March is warmer with a lot less snow! We will be waiting for your next video! Stay safe, healthy and happy Shawn!
Winter scenes are beautiful! Amazing progress against the odds of winter!
It looks as though you have had a terrific amount of snow as well as ice to contend with. The cabin is really coming along now. Thank you for the beautiful.cinematography too - the flash of orange from the fox was a huge contrast against the snow.
I missed this post last week. It does my own heart good to watch your work. It's an escape from this terrible world. You're in my prayers as I keep current on Canada's happenings.
It is so good to see you back. I really hope you enjoyed a wonderful time with your family and Calli and were able to rest up a bit. You work so hard. The reward of what you are accomplishing will be so worthwhile. You are always amazing in your work and creativity. May the a Lord bless you and your family with good health and success in this fantastic challenge. Good luck
Hi 👋 dear, how are you doing?
Thanks for this..I needed some honest sanity in all the crazy going around. Nice reprieve from it all.
So glad to see you and Cali again. It's refreshing to see a craftsman ply his trade so well. I love the stills and videos of the pines.
I admire your perseverance. I'd be tempted to wait til spring rather than chop and shovel inside. You attention to detail has inspired me.
Hi 👋 Susan, how are you doing?
The cabin will be awesome when it's finally done. Such hard work to build. You're amazing!
I've watched you for a long time now. I've appreciated and enjoyed your knowledge and ability to do build and provide for yourself and your family all you need. I've appreciated your know-how in being self-reliant.
Today, another chord struck me as I watched your video. It reminded me of how I cannot do what you do. I cannot be self-reliant. I don't have the know-how, strength or tools. I have contractors who rarely-if ever-show up. I have a house in the city that needs the sprucing up to sell finished. I have a cabin in the woods that needs to be finished...it's about 75% finished. I know exactly what needs to be done. I know some of how to get it done (I watched my dad build my whole life till he died...and my grandfather and brother, too, until they died). I might know more than I think I know about how to get the rest of the building done, but I don't know that...if that makes any sense. I don't know what I don't know. Even if I was sure about how to finish any of it, I'm now disabled. Sometimes it's hard to walk across the room. I can't even pick up the tools I used to use. I'm in no shape to do for myself what needs to be done. Normally, as I said, I can watch your videos with just appreciation for your skills and know-how. Today, I found myself focusing more on my inabilities. Bummer...not your fault, though.
Superb, exacting workmanship. Takes lots of stamina, strength and patience. Bless you Shawn. Love you sweet Cali 🧡🙏
Je vous admire pour votre courage et votre détermination qui vous permettra d’atteindre votre objectif
Merci pour ces moments de partage
Great too see you and Cali back at it, doing what you love best. Cant wait to see the finish product. Keep us inspired Shawn.
Beautiful drone scenery wth the fox & the deer's. Thank you Shawn.
Good to see you again. Good work, slow and steady, hampered by the typical Canadian weather but it will be so worth it. Take care, be safe. ❤️ Dorset, UK
May God bless you and keep you safe.
Nice progress Shawn.. your certainly a determined man I appreciate that.. it says a lot about a persons character
It’s going to be a BEAUTIFUL house to call HOME when you get done with it. God bless you friend.
It is awesome to see that you are almost at 2 million subscriber’s. I remember when there were only 10k of us. Congratulations and love seeing your channel do so well. The cabin is coming along great!!!!
That came to 3million because he created and commented on Ainsl's page and he acknowledges only very familiar people and does not acknowledge others. Don't forget Shawn a lot of us are Americans too.
Hey Shawn, That's some rugged work. Hard enough but then add cold and snow and whew.Well done,,,,Keep wood in the stove and a pot of coffee bubbling. I worked for years outside and winter is rough. I once came home with a circle of ice on my sweater in front of my chest the size of a dinner plate,,,,Thank God for wool.Stay the course.
All worth it, knowing how cozy next winter will feel in comparison. Great work as always, Shawn.
I have to say that watching you do such amazing work actually eases my souls some. My health fell out on me with a stroke preceding a bout with Cancer, and all the plans I had of building something like this fell out of view. At my health holds steady these past few years I am hoping to be able to get some land and begin work for something of my own. THank you for sharing your journey with us.
After two years it's already better than netflix series. Can't wait for spring. The gardening and cooking videos where the best. Best of luck to you sir. Keep it up.
Watching you work in these winter conditions brings back memories of many years working throught the winter framing, roofing siding, excavation etc. It was rough enough using dimensional lumber. I can't imagine man handling those logs in those conditions. I still am working at 73 but in a managment role, still some physical work but not like before. It is amazing to see how the body acclimates to the cold so that single digits are not a problem and on days it hits 30s it feels hot.
And then there is the wind making everything more difficult!
Watching Shawn chop the ice inside the cabin gives a good perspective of the size. I'm very happy with this space compared to the last cabin.
Wow.. The sense of pride must be tremendous. Fill a persons soul for quite some time. Love it Shawn
Cabin is beginning to look like a place You could live in some day.
Going to take a LONG time though
First the walls , then the roof .
Then the windows and doors and chinking then everything else .
At leat 6 months more .
Hope I am alive to see it happen Shawn.

Hi 👋 dear, how are you?
What energy you have. No matter the weather, you just keep on going. Just amazing.
Super relaxing to watch. Each log is so much work - especially the top of the walls. But step by step progress towards building your own house! Your great grandkids will know your work, and be beneficiaries of it. Keep up the hard work!
