Omg this happened to me today while sailing! Halyard clove hitch slipped up the spar and the boom fell to within a half inch of the deck. The rig stayed together and I was able to keep sailing but it was hella annoying. I put more electrical tape on when I got home. Then I watched this video. Duh! I am glad I caught this and am going to hit that halyard with the Hankster too, before I go sailing again. Thanks Lee!
I also use some gorilla tape to mark the position of my halyard and keep it from slipping higher (which would lower the boom). Electrical tape doesnt work as well. :(.
Using an overhand stopper knot to keep the bitter end from slipping through the knot is clever. Not slipping on sunfish's extruded aluminum spar is more of a challenge than on a wooden spar. There's three yard-hitches in the Ashely Book of Knots in order of increasing security: ABOK #1677 gaff Topsail Halyard Bend, ABOK #1678 Studding Sail Bend, and ABOK #1679, the Topsail Halyard Bend. Adding a stopper to the bitter end of any of them would improve security.
Thanks, great videos, just had to retie my halyard. How do you feel about wind indicators? I have a home made one clipped to my bow handle. I sail for fun so no issues but is that legal? Any good designs I should consider? Maybe an idea for a future video.
Wind indicators are really helpful and I do plan on doing a video on them. On the bow handle may be not as helpful as in the upper spar, at about eye level or a little higher. Try clipping one there. See if that helps too:).
Another really great video and I will use it instead of the "Snuggle Hitch" I had tried last year. However, it does bring a question to mind. That is: can I use this "Hitch" in place of a Mast Cleat, to help with the halyard. Thanks again, great videos.
HI Gilbert, thanks for the kind words... the Hankster 2 is to hold up the upper spar... you would use this in place of a Colve HItch... it could technically be used to replace a mast cleat... i have another video showing that... three new hacks for 2021... in that video, i just used a lot of wraps... that was overkill... good luck tell me how it works if you use it!
@@LeeSideSailing Thanks Lee - I will be using it with the grand kids next week - I like the idea of not screwing or drilling in the Mast, and taking some of the pressure off the deck.
I don't know if you have already done this but I think people would like to know how you store your sunfish boat over the winter or for long periods of being out of the water. A potential video idea 💡 for you 👍👍👍🙂
Now that I have this new sail, just wondering if I should graduate from the boom hitch to this bad boy. Since you have used this knot, how has it held after a year or more since you posted this? Thanks!
I tried this and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Great to hear!
Thanks Lee this was helpful! 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Puedo decir que he usado el nudo HANKSTER y ya no se me fila la driza de la botavara superior. Muchas gracias por la sugerencia.
Your welcome!
Thanks I'm a new sunfish owner . Good stuff !
Thank you !

Great content - thanks for putting this stuff out!
Thank you!
I just use a rolling hitch, which is pretty similar, but less confusing to tie.
I use a clove hitch, but for some reason some people can’t get it to work for them. :). Thanks for the comment:)
Buenos días capy lee.donde puedo comprar una vela en colombia ? Gracias.

Im not sure!

Good luck let me know how it goes.

Good idea ! Thanks. :)
Isn’t that like double clove hitch? Cool.
It’s a Hankster 2... ;).
Why not the Constrictor knot? I know it gets basically impossible to untie, but it does work. Btw: interesting video, as usual 😀
Hehe. Thanks. I actually don’t know the constrictor knot, but I do know it’s really hard to get out. :).
Constrictor knot is the correct knot for this application. Might be borderline impossible to untie though.
Is there any reason a boom hitch isn’t used?
There is no reason why it cant be used too!
@@LeeSideSailing Glad to hear, and thank you for your vids Lee. For me, a first timer, you have supplied me with a ton of information.
Good to hear it helps. Im coming oit with some more soon!

I mostly use the clove hitch and a couole more round turns as seem in my Jens rig video…. I use the Gust adgust with Mendleblatt variation….
