Little Star was a lullabye to her daughter who she just had given birth to. Met Girl was about her mother who died when she was five.

You're right that it's been hard for her to top this album, but she knew that, which is why she's never tried to repeat it. It was a moment in time and her life. I do think MUSIC is a fab album, so looking forward to your reaction to that, and some fans actually prefer CONFESSIONS. She continued to evolve and hopefully MADAME X makes more sense to you now. I don't think you can have MADAME X without RAY OF LIGHT and AMERICAN LIFE.
Anyway, you're right that they don't make pop records like ROL anymore, but there are lots of artists still doing cool, introspective work today if you like that sort of thing - Bjork, FKA twigs, Lana Del Rey. Of course, there's only one queen.

This album has so many wonderful memories for me and it so deserved all the Grammy's it won. Frozen was so ahead of its time, mixing a ballad with techno ambiance. I remember everyone said that life did indeed begin at 40 for Madonna as she was 40 at the time and her artistry was at its peak. I remember many weekends clubbing with my best friend Anthony and then getting back to his flat drunk and both of us chilling and singing along to this album then we would laugh as he would take it so seriously thinking he had written the lyrics, especially drowned world. But that is one of the magical things Madonna has, she is able to make the listener believe the songs were written just for them. I find its the perfect mix of dance stuff and ballads and the overall quality of the album could not be matched, no one could compete at the time. Motherhood and the kabbalah made her so spiritual and focused on her craft. Mer Girl will always give me chills. Well done on another wonderful review and i look forward to your review of Music which was also a stunning moment in her stunning history, much love from the UK xx

Kinda shocked you barely focused on the actual music, just the lyrics. The music itself is the reason it’s one of the greatest albums of all time. The technology, production value and composition of the music and ambience was like nothing that the world had heard before.

Spot on review man. It’s the best thing she has ever done and way beyond it’s time. Even if it was released now in 2021 it would sound fresh.

"The technology, production value and composition of the music and ambience was like nothing that the world had heard before." That's not true I was alive and had this album when this first came out back in 98 and there were many electronic music that were quite similar already back then, she just brought those sounds into the mainstream. Don't get me wrong, this album is my favorite album from Madonna and love every single track on it

Shanti Ashtangi is actually an opening chant done by those who practice Ashtanga. The 8 limbs of yoga which ironically is the 8th track on the album. During the time Madonna made this record she was really in to Ashtang Yoga.
The Opening Prayer is a blessing of gratitude offered to the lineage of teachers and their students who have enabled this ancient practice to survive through thousands of years so that we can experience its benefits today. The recitation of this mantra cleanses the energy of the space we have chosen to practice yoga, as well as preparing the mind, body and emotions for the forthcoming Ashtanga sequence.

I bow to the lotus feet of the Supreme Guru

which are the refuge, the jungle physician,
which eliminate the delusion caused by the poisonous herb of Samsara (conditioned existence).
I prostrate before the sage Patanjali
who has thousands of radiant, white heads (as the divine serpent, Ananta)
and who has, as far as his arms, assumed the form of a man
holding a conch shell (divine sound), a wheel (discus of light or infinite time) and a sword (discrimination).

All I know is Madonna is very aware of what she is doing and pays attention to every detail. During this time she was studying Ashtanga (which literally means 8 limbs of yoga) so imo I think she knew the song had to be placed 8th on the album.

I think this album and MadameX are the ones where she just wrote the songs she wanted to do rather than thinking about the charts. These 2 albums are such unique creations.

This album is something that will never happen again for any artist. It’s a magical spell that Madonna cast and no one can ever break it!! I bought it on the first day of release and I’m still under that spell! These songs are mesmerizing mystical untouchable!

Joe Garcia I too bought this the day it came out. First time I heard Frozen I was stunned. I had it on repeat forever before I could move on to the other tracks. Hahaha. This album was her last BEST piece of work. Ray of Light gave us an honest glimpse of where she was spiritually and being a new mother made her so relatable to her life long fans. We were on the journey with her. We got to see her vulnerable softer side. Now she’s made herself too complicated. This need to be “in” and on trend with the shit that is ruining our current airwaves. The mumbling and goofy beats that make no sense. It’s so sad. She needs to ditch the grillz, the dumb eye patch, her “perfect” makeup and the layers and layers of stupid clothing and jewelry. Wish she would go back to basics. Please stop with the lip injections and procedures. I wish she would take advice from her true fans that want our Madonna back. Unfortunately she surrounds herself with “yes” people and we get stuck with Madame X. 🤦🏽

  • @Amaduality

To put this album in context concerning Madonna's life, it was released almost two years after her first foray into motherhood. "Little Star" is being sung to her newlyborn daughter, Lourdes (Lola), who was an infant at the time. She had also only recently, become very spiritual as a practitioner of Kabbalah - an ancient sect of Judaism. "Mer Girl" is a song about her struggle coming to terms with the death of her mother, who she lost to cancer when she was only six years old.
Something to keep in mind on your next listen. Peace.

The Power of Goodbye and Sky Fits Heaven are my personal favourites but the whole album is great. Your next album is Music (2000) but before that you should definitely react to Beautiful Stranger (from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Be Careful (duet with Ricky Martin), Time Stood Still and American Pie (both from The Next Best Thing). All those songs were recorded before the Music album

This album really saved Madonna's career cause her last two studio albums Erotica and Bedtime Stories suffered a lot of misfortunes but Ray Of Light is such a masterpiece album and it's mostly everybody favorite Madonna album and it's kind of personal like the Like A Prayer album but songs like Ray Of Light and Frozen are just iconic I love the song Skin to this album is such a masterpiece I know Madonna was happy this album did her justice.

I think this album grows with repeated listens, and I dont really think it makes sense to listen to it while looking at the lyrics, and expecting it to match the expectations because you will grow attached to it in time... it makes more sense to close your eyes laying down and focusing on the crazy amount of layers the production has. I have listen to this album since release day and STILL DISCOVER NEW THINGS, MEANINGS AND SOUNDS.... Few albums offer something new in each listen after 25 years. And yes, the title track is one of the best things she´s ever released (Skin too XD).

Tori Amos’s “Little Earthquakes” ranked 233 on Rolling Stones’s Greatest Albums of All Time, but sadly nobody gives her music a chance. 😢 From Rolling Stone: “Here Tori Amos established herself as the poet laureate for a generation of battle-worn young women no longer satisfied with silence. From behind a piano that she wields like a machete aside her sharp, poignant reflections, Little Earthquakes is an incisive reflection on sexual assault, abuse, PTSD, and coming of age under the heavy veil of it all. At times thorny and confrontational, Amos’ voice still remains a warm invitation to people, like her, learning how to diffuse their trauma and move forward as best they can.”

Jesse, I completely agree with you, music nowadays is so boring. There was way more diversity back in the day (Pop, R&B, Rock, Hip Hop, Dance, Electronica, and so on). For me, the last decade (as a whole) of good music was the 2000s. The early 2010s was great but like around 2015, I felt that music was going to the opposite direction for the worst.
