Bluesky tech is a bit of a wild topic - it uses what is being called "federated decentralisation" which uses a public protocol. This a weird form of decentralisation because it is a bunch of small "instances" (aka nodes) hosted by groups or even individuals - these hosts have full control over what is allowed, what can be banned etc. And unlike the blockchain were what is written is locked in, they can change the data on their instances so information can be changed retroactively, which is pretty sus.

It's kinda funny how people artificially hype Bluesky up only to come back to Twitter once they realize nobody follows them to the other platform. Bluesky is one of those services nobody will remember in 5 years. I also love how people leave Twitter because "millionaires/billionaires bad", only to sign up to another platform run by another millionaire/billionaire.
Strangely, though, Google and Apple aren't trying to destroy Bluesky the way they did with Parler. People at the time said that a Twitter just for people of one ideological outlook was an idea doomed to fail, but that's never what Parler was meant to be. It was meant to be Twitter for all people, because Twitter itself was only for people with one particular ideological outlook. But, of course, Parler had to be wrecked, because those champions of inclusion can't stand it when the people who actually represent the majority in terms of the issues get to participate in the debate. They're inclusive, but only of a minority of people.
Those same people seem to forget that twitter was run by billionaires before musk even offered to buy it. Billionaires are okay as long as they pretend to agree with your ideology while they rob you blind.

The protocol-frontend split is such a huge red herring for why this should be successful. Email functions as a protocol because it was advantageous for servers all over the world to use the same protocol, for example so that outlook or Thunderbird can get mail and not have to understand multiple protocols. It's for convenience, so that a bunch of mail from different providers can communicate with each other and deliver mail between them, and users can have all their accounts in one interface. For twitter and bluesky, there is no benefit to doing this for the company. They don't want people operating on multiple platforms, they want everyone in their platform. And since DMs are not the main focus of these platforms, the users get minimal benefit as well. It's not like the 90s when everyone had a dedicated mail client installed on their machine, everything is web based, so the companies don't get the benefits that came when email's protocols were standardized, and the users don't want that in the first place. Huge waste of effort, the literal only benefit is that even more people can use this API as a base and fragment the userbase even further.

I'm only at 5:00 but if anyone is having trouble grasping the concept of the email analogy and the protocol not being proprietary, think of it this way: Imagine AOL was the ONLY email provider around and they owned the email PROTOCOL. And because EMAIL the PROTOCOL was proprietary, they could ban you from their service, and you could NEVER have email. By making the Twitter protocol not proprietary, you could have a service independent from the twitter app but still using the twitter-style protocol. So sure, something like Bluesky can still ban you, same as Twitter. But multiple services can still pop up and you have competition. You can go somewhere else. If you want a service that truly values free speech, you have to either vote with your wallet or make your own.

For instance, if I'm an artist and grow my brand and content on Twitter, if I get banned from Twitter, suddenly my portfolio disappears.

Since anyone can host their own "platform" on top of the protocols, yeh it basically means the twitter exodus beginning the transformation of soicial media from a "virtual town square" to lots of smaller private silos. The only way an all-encompassing social media platform like twitter could last as a virtual town square for actual individuals (not bots) while maintaining the right free speech would have to be through actual social institutions. NOT an NGO, but also nothing like a private corporation or state. It's difficult for people in 2024 to understand what I mean when I say "social institution," because it's been over 100 years since society at large was capable of managing itself, but the distinction between "public" and "private" was not always understood as state institutions vs private corporations/NGOs. Anyway, having a social fabric to build social institutions on is kind of a prerequisite, but not enough people have become so exhausted with the deadend electoral theater of who gets to be in charge of maintaining the decaying liberal-democratic state institutions to give up on it entirely as an outlet for their political energy. Once enough people do, that creates the possibility for them turning to each other directly to build the sort of social institutions required for any of this.

Here’s what Hank is basically saying about Bluesky and AT Protocol. If Twitter supported AT Protocol, you could see people’s posts from Bluesky, and people on Bluesky could see posts from Twitter. Comments, reposts, and likes would all show across both platforms (and any other platform that wants to use AT Protocol), and if you blocked someone on Twitter it would automatically block them on Bluesky and every other platform using AT Protocol. To be fair it’ll matter more when there are more platforms using AT Protocol (or mastodon), but in this case Bluesky is like Samsung and Twitter is like Apple who refused to add RCS support for years to make texting a worse experience for everyone, including android users, to convince people they needed iPhones.
The thing I don't understand is what would be the incentive to have more of these platforms for a developer or startup, like maybe I don't understand the API, could you make it unique somehow or would it all just basically be Twitter clones?
It would all just be Twitter clones. Remember the days of 15 different Twitter clients with all their different apps and themes and features and they only worked for the client and the clients would not all talk to each other since they used Twitter as just a basis and built features on top of it. It would be the same thing and it would boil down to trying to use the same interface everywhere which will just be required which would just be Twitter The at protocol isn't needed this type of short form communication is honestly crude anything with character limitations should not be standardized to begin with.
@@PaendaTube yeah shoulda figured, if the API was abstract enough to allow different forms of social media, and robust enough to be able to make them interact and play nice with one another then you'd have something interesting on your hands, you could make a Facebook or an Instagram and have it interact someone elses Twitter or Snapchat and have a connected yet separate social network. Ironically, Bluesky has a feature that allows users to combat bots more effectively than on any other social media platform. There’s a lot going on under the hood that deserves explanation, but basically, there is a feature called moderation lists. This allows individuals (or groups) to vet and add accounts that are typically problematic-such as AI artists or bot accounts-to a list. Anyone can subscribe to these lists, which automatically mutes (or blocks) all accounts included in them. It functions as an anti-feed, and it’s surprisingly effective. The blocking feature is particularly powerful; once you block someone, all interactions you had with that person will no longer be visible to anyone. This is why it’s referred to as _"nuclear"_ by users there.
Right... Because Twitter didn't have any bots before Elon. (spoiler, twitter was 80% bots before he took over, he drastically reduced it since he took over).

You clearly don't understand the difference between a protocol and an app that implements a protocol. The protocol defines an API that any app can implement or consume. The ability to ban users is completely irrelevant.
you aren't getting the next level thinking. unless you are going to build apps, and as long as bluesky can ban your account, which they can do, then the app's protocol are completely irrelevant to the end user. Or you could be a bot.
@@drivethrupoet That is the point. It's meant to give people the power to just switch provider if they have an unpopular opinion. Tbh bluesky has every right to set and enforce their own policies. And every good app for a decentralized social media platform would allow you to change your server. If a user doesn't understand that, then nothing of value was lost and they are better off on Twitter.
The protocol is HTTPS, the application is the API. The implementation is the programming that runs the web servers and makes the service what it is. The value is in the content that the users create. The content has to be stored somewhere and a company has to be the custodian of it. In addition the user experience is also data-driven therefore in the custodianship of the company who is maintaining the data storage. @@VinceP1974 There are many kinds of protocols. HTTP(S) is a web protocol; it's not really relevant here (aside from the fact that every single website uses it). The kinds of protocols we're talking about here are lower level.

By making the Twitter protocol not proprietary, you could have a service independent from the twitter app but still using the twitter-style protocol. So sure, something like Bluesky can still ban you, same as Twitter. But multiple services can still pop up and you have competition. You can go somewhere else.

Musk repeatedly banned left-wing voices and journalists on Twitter. Clearly, he is biased and silences dissenting voices.

It would be the same thing and it would boil down to trying to use the same interface everywhere which will just be required which would just be Twitter
The at protocol isn't needed this type of short form communication is honestly crude anything with character limitations should not be standardized to begin with.
People actually think bluesky doesn't have bots just because its not run by Elon
They have essentially gaslit themselves into seeing pre Musk twitter as a utopia
Right...
Because Twitter didn't have any bots before Elon.
(spoiler, twitter was 80% bots before he took over, he drastically reduced it since he took over).
@@Pers0n97 Thats probably one of the reasons certain people hate him, he put a massive dent in their ability to astroturf their ideas to a captive audience.

Asmon might get it later (at 4:00), but Bluesky/Mastadon basically works like Vent/Mumble. People can host their own Vent servers and moderate them like they see fit. Bluesky is a vent server. The way they are different isnthat you can "login" to multiple Vent servers at once and see all the content together.
This is correct. Although I have trouble understanding what purpose this is attempting to serve. People create their own subreddits because it has a good “feel” as its own page. The Twitter formula isent as effective.
I think the issue is the same problem all open source software has, and that's not many people will use it which in social media terms makes it kind of pointless
@@theremix54 I believe the goal was that people could "leave" a platform while keeping both the same UI and friends/follow lists as you could post to multiple servers. I agree this doesn't seem like a good value, but I don't see the value in standard social media either.
We're just going to memoryhole Mastodon defederating Gab? So much for being open. Lefties are just mad people with opposing ideologies are no longer getting blanket bans on twitter.
But the servers would always have to have rules and moderation to prevent against illegal activity like cp right? So the concept of free from all censorship would be impossible
"bluesky"
alright. tell me youre a lunatic without telling
22:35 it's crazy that composition books are the cheapest form of notebook at about eighty cents per book. But a youtuber can slap a logo on it and charge ten dollars for 3 of them
Depens on quality and process and where it's made, books in my country 250 pages from vendors considered 'good' by my country's populace cost around 70 cents.
At a quick glance at high quality such as at office-works they will cost around 4.57.
Their competition is with these kinds of sellers, not those who use underpaid labor en-masse to produce books.
Still less expensive than notebooks cgp grey sells at 35 though he apparently uses age-old techniques and highest quality paper, and is manufactured in London for authencity.
@@ipadair7345if it's made in China it shouldn't be more than 2$
1$ for the crappy designs that are custom since you need to pay the design team however much
But if it's made in China it's made using legal slav labor and they are going to have profit. If it's not made in China they should put that on the web site but i have to assume it is.
A hand made book paying an artisan fairly is class to me can't afford it? Save up it'll be worth the effort too made trying to get the money and worth the effort the artisan put in
You can literally say this same exact thing for all UA-camr merch. Asmongold has an OTK shirt for sale that goes for 40 bucks after shipping. I guarantee you it did not cost anywhere near that much to make.
That’s how UA-cam merch is. Content creators just don’t have the economies of scale to sell their products cheap so you have to pay a premium for it.
I mean... that's $3.33 per book. Amazon right now has Meads *on sale* for $2.28 per book. Off sale they're $7.09. So I think you're probably mistaken about whatever presuppositions you have about what they should cost.

Just as you have every right to create your own homeserver ("The ability to ban users is completely irrelevant.").
(The followers lost, the block list)
For instance we all have email, but an email's application email rules are specific to the application itself not the email protocol
@@VinceP1974 There are many kinds of protocols. HTTP(S) is a web protocol; it's not really relevant here (aside from the fact that every single website uses it). The kinds of protocols we're talking about here are lower level. ATProto is a social networking protocol that other apps/companies can use to create their own platforms; Bluesky is only one example of an ATProto-compliant app. That protocol has no bearing on how Bluesky enforces its content policy and which users get banned. Those are app/company-level rules.

1:30 Is he trying to say the Bluesky protocol is open-source? That doesn't mean whoever buys the platform can't do whatever they want with the platform; the owner of Bluesky could just change the protocol if Bluesky is the primary maintainer and anyone else would have to fork it, or vice versa Bluesky could make their own fork
