    Chorus:
And she's still a mystery to me
I thought I'd grow up gracefully
    I'd understand my woman thoroughly
    But the more I see
The more I see there is to see, there is to see
And she's still a mystery to me
(She's still a mystery to me)
She's still a mystery to me

This song caught my attention when I first heard it on KYA AM (S.F.) in the winter of 1967, and I love it even more now. The Gershwin-like orchestra at the beginning and Sebastians reassuring voice is magical.

I never heard this song before but I love it. It came on in my car on XM Radio. At first I thought it was The Turtles. Another band I love. ❤️

Only now, a half-century on, do I hear how much of Brian Wilson's influence there is in this one. Very "Wouldn't It Be Nice"ish. I can't think of any other Spoonful songs with that feature, if I'm not just imagining it.

Give “Six O’clock” a listen. It’s definitely influenced by Brian Wilson.

What a great song to kick off an underrated album. Allmusic gives it 3 stars.

These guys were one of America's premier bands. They made intelligent pop music. What they could do with 2:30 of music is outstanding!

That is preposterous! It gets a 4/5 in my book! Try a little bit, and Old Folks and my all time favorites from them! Never mind Summer in the city, do you believe in magic, daydream, younger girl, did you ever have to make up your mind, Younger Generation, you didn't have to be so nice, younger girl, Six O Clock, and she's still a mystery. They should've chosen a better single for this record they chose money... not the strongest, most independent track on the album. But this is a phenomenal album!

I haven't heard this in 50 years but it all came flooding back. It hit #27 in the US so I must have heard it back in the day. Not a big hit but still great and memorable.

I am crazy about this song but soon after this song came out John Sebastian left the group. I think they released one LP after he left. They were one of the bands I wished never dissolved their union.

"Revelation Revolution: 69" was released after he left, i honestly think it's still just an amazing album, incredibly underrated, as is all of their stuff, and "run with you" is just such an incredible amazing song, i love it to bits

This is the best Spoonful album. Clearly ahead of it's time. Recorded at Mirasound (a clean studio with one of the first 8-tracks).
Zally plays on almost every cut. Zally was still legally in the US, but had lost his green card after the LA bust. That was one of the great tragedies of modern music. Steve nor Joe were at fault. The idiotic drug laws of the time destroyed one of the great music ensembles of the era.
In 1966-67 they sold more albums than the Beatles. I suspect the young people today find this difficult to believe.
The band was John, Jerry Yester (the great arranger and producer -listen to Tom Waits' "Closing Time" among other great albums.), Steve, Joe AND Zally.
They photographed a zany back cover with a photo of Zally sticking his tongue out. This photo was spliced together with the photo of the legal band (John, Jerry, Joe and Steve). In the end, they chickened out and did not print that back cover. They printed the single photo of the legal band. Probably best. They had all suffered enough.
Zally was the heart and soul of the band. They could not have made this record without him. Using his photo would have exposed them to federal charges of illegal employment of a criminal alien. -Zally was Canadian.
I cried like a baby when Zally passed.
The original stereo master of this record included out-of-phase content in a "hidden" THIRD channel. If you wire a third speaker in series with the stereo speakers. you can hear this content. Mostly, it is Zally's guitar and Jerry Yester's keyboard. They probably wanted to put all of Zally's playing in this channel, but such a setup is not fully discrete. There would have been audible phase distortion and annoying bleed through. As it was released, it sounded great on my Hi-Fi of the era, -wired with a third speaker. -A large 12" Electro Voice coax speaker in a corner loaded bass-reflex cabinet. My vinyl copy still has the pamphlet with a wiring diagram.
The modern digital version (ADD) may be a cleaner remix from studio source parts (remember, it is in 8 track), If so, the third channel will not be there. However, the earlier digital version (AAD) made from the original master tape contains the out-of-phase third channel. If you have this, it is well worth hooking up a third speaker. You can hear more of Jerry and Zally's playing. Place this speaker behind you, for best effect.
I suspect it was done, both as an experiment, and a joke to make Zally's playing more obvious. -Giving the US Immigration and The bloody Hoover FBI the proper raspberry they richly deserved. -Much ado over a single joint, and now, it's fully legal in my state AND California. The LA cops were notorious for beating kids with long hair, racially profiling, and violating the civil rights of most people they encountered. When OJ Simpson happened, they they had no idea how to LEGALLY collect and store evidence! It is ironic that O.J. Simpson benefited from years of the LA police abusing the constitutional rights of citizens.
