- Underwater combat in Dungeons and Dragons can feel like fighting with both hands tied behind your back, so for Kraken Week, I wanted to talk about what makes underwater combat in Dungeons and Dragons so hard, and how to make it just a little bit better.
Shoutout to @pointyhatstudios and @GinnyDi for putting together a fun theme. #krakenweek

KRAKEN WEEK SPREADS!!!
KRAKEN WEEK LETS GOOO!!!
haha thanks for the love!
I’ve been loving kraken week, found a few new creators in the space.
Very cool animated character and a great video overall.
Just make sure if you use a merperson kiss to let your players breath underwater you’re not forcing anyone to do something they or their characters wouldn’t (ie different attractions).
definitely!
@@TheFantasyForge Also, when will you have a discord for your community? I’d love to engage with your community and content more.
i wonder if charminging an enemey merperson,to kiss you could grant waterbreath in the middol of combat?
I've always thought of using water as a more dangerous area but never thought of cool ways to make it a fun interaction and not just TPK central.
I'm running a game loosely based on the world of Ghosts of Saltmarsh and was doing one of the appendix underwater ruins for the level 1 adventure. The PCs ran off before completing it after being given their potions of water breathing and I didn't just want to hand them more. Luckily, the party has an artificer. So I made up some dive suits made out of a special sea grass. It's got a hose that floats on the surface that's only good to ~100 ft deep, the hose can break, and it's only good for 1 hour after they get it wet so I figured it was sufficiently more restrictive than a potion of water breathing. This gave my artificer a cool new recipe, and gives them a tool if I throw more underwater locations at them in the future.
This sounds so friggin awesome. Howd you handle the crafting of the suit?
@@TheFantasyForge Not too differently from the magic crafting rules from Xanathar's Guide to Everything. They needed a recipe, special ingredient, time, and money. I think the only thing explicitly contrary to RAW was that I had them do a mini sidequest to get to their sea grass and deal with a barge having trouble rather than having them fight something for the ingredient. Everything else was kind of hand waved by the fact that they had a cleric with alchemist's tools providing help and some consumables (so no money on the part of the PCs was used since they were level 1).
The whole thing was kind of lucky because it gave me an excuse to introduce some new PCs in a low stakes way that joined after our first session and also gave me the excuse to appropriately increase the difficulty for the remains of the ruin (more monsters came through that portal you didn't close). I also like giving my artificer recipes to make stuff with, they also have a recipe for "bottled wind" that they started with for backstory reasons (I have no idea what the special ingredient for that is yet, probably some bird feather).
The spell Freedom of movement is also super useful for underwater combat 😊
you're so right! I didn't even think about that one for this haha
I was sent by the hat. You know, the pointy one. It sounds like there are two main ways to go underwater, one is sudden and the other is with preparation & I think I ou could combine both into one adventure.
Let's get Kraken!
We took a trip out into a spot called Kraken Bay. My wizard with underwater breathing ritual, metamagic adept to turn a fireball into lightning was great fun, we had magic scales that let us move freely it was great! But the dm didnt let me double damage lightning like I thought, still at least not halved lol.
5:37 Tobias looks a little bigger than I remember here 🤔
Great submission to kraken week! I’ll definitely be sending this to my DM for our pirate campaign and if I ever run encounters myself I’ll definitely be utilizing this!
(I rewatched this like 4 times and couldn’t find the real displacer kitty, and I can’t tell if he’s truly here or I’ve lost it)
Happy Kraken Week!!! 🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙
Release the KRAKEN! also i must have missed him which is a shame cause now i wont know if tobias takes to water like a jaguar, or more like a house cat.
I think it is intended to be hard if you don't prepare. Getting prepared is not hard, and i feel it is an environmental hazard, and it is a matter of player skill and engagement in the encounter. I agree there should be an ultimate suite where breathing and fighting normally.
yeah first thing I said was that it's meant to be hard lol, but it's also slow
FANTASY FORGE KRAKEN WEEK DROP!!!!!!!
THIS IS SUCH GREAT TIMING IM MAKING A PIRATE CAMPAGIN AND I WANTED A KRAKEN FIGHT WITH MY PLAYERS. Btw that dive in joke was so good, "beach to their own" ;)
Beach to their own! 🤣🤣
Just discovered your channel, binged your entire DM playlist during the work day as I mentally prepare to start DMing a campaign this week, love the work man great stuff. Really helpful as well.
Holy cow I hope it was entertaining to listen to! Appreciate the love
@@TheFantasyForgeVery much so!
❤ Love a good house rule - I’d be interested in hearing how you handle underwater casting - I’m on a quest to collect all of them on UA-cam - do you have a playlist with all your house rules? I scrubbed thru your backlog, but it’s easy to miss something - I’ll add all of them to my growing list of nearly two thousand videos on houserules ❤
Oh awesome! That sounds like fun! I don't but I can always make a video on my house rules
@@TheFantasyForge that sounds awesome ❤️
Yay! Another new creator found during this fine Kraken week!
You have a new Subscriber!
aw yay appreciate you stickin around 🙌
IMO:
If the adventure/campaign is going to have an underwater theme, give the players underwater options.
If only one encounter is an underwater combat, use it to raise the stakes, maybe by giving the players the option of only one character having water breathing and swim speed with a scroll found or given by an NPC. The encounter should be slightly easy to balance out the dificulty of fighting underwater and to alleviate all the disadvantages with easy rolls.
FINTASTIC PUNS! LOVE IT!
thank you! I feel validated now
I just noticed your pun in there 😂
Meanwhile me all my players all 5 of them went races with swim speeds and breath under water along with classes that work great for underwater combat
Woah! That's crazy haha. Are they pirates by chance?
@TheFantasyForge
👍for kraken week
These were some funny puns.
thank you! I knew some people would appreciate them haha
Don't you mean... finny puns?
@@charlesfisher-kh5sw what a missed opportunity...DAM...🤭
LET'S GET KRAKEN FOLKS!
fish puns! Love it!
kraken week!!!!!!
Hi
Could you make a video of a list containing the best monsters for every player level :)
@@Laci-v5v I don't think that kind of list exists. It's a very subjective subject that's totally dependant on both your party and your campaign.
Use kobold fight club, it's a great tool to use to balance encounters based off number of PCs and their level. You can set the biome or creature type if you have a specific setting. Great tool for any DM!
Sounds great! Just make sure not to homogenise the fun out of the game for players that picked races with a swimming speed to be the cool underwater guides or whatever :D
Definitely something to think about! Playing on everyone's strength vs making everyone the same
