    This is a great demonstration! I recently have begun with double priming my canvases with MH primer and am very happy with the resulting painting process - I’m no longer frustrated with paint sinking in!

    I really wanted to like this product. It produces a surface that I like working on. The paint doesn't sink in initially but there is considerable sinking in over days and weeks. I have tried using medium to improve the surface for reworking but that is not the answer. I don't usually varnish my paintings but this may be necessary. Oil primer is preferred.

      Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. It seems like there may be an issue with the application or compatibility with the surface. Please get in touch with us so we may assist you further in resolving this matter. joelle@michaelharding.co.uk - Best wishes

    Great to see the difference...perhaps now I don't need to use oil based primer.

    Very interesting. How does painting over this compare to oil primers? And does it contain any tooth?

      Thank you for your interest in our Non-Absorbent Acrylic Primer (NAAP). When comparing painting over NAAP to traditional oil primers, you'll find that NAAP offers a different working experience. NAAP creates a non-absorbent, slick surface which can be quite different from the more absorbent, matte surface that traditional oil primers provide. This non-absorbent quality means that your oil paints will sit on top of the surface longer, allowing for more manipulation and blending time.
      Regarding tooth, NAAP does contain a subtle texture, but it's generally less pronounced than what you would find with some oil primers. The tooth of NAAP is designed to provide just enough grip for your paint layers to adhere well without being overly textured.
      I hope this clarifies your questions! If you have any more inquiries, feel free to reach out.

    I have prepared some MDF panels with a thin layer of GAC 100 and am now ready to prime. I’m wondering - do I need to apply gesso under NAAP? Or can I go straight in with the white NAAP and start painting? I usually do an underpainting in acrylic as well- can I do this with acrylic paints over the NAAP and then add the oil? (Or use the NAAP mixed with other coloured acrylics for the underpainting?) I don’t have the £ to buy your coloured primers (I wish). Thanks!

      Thank you for your question and for using our products. You can go straight in with the Michael Harding Non-Absorbent Acrylic Primer (NAAP) without needing to apply gesso first. Our NAAP is designed to create an excellent ground for oil paints, so there's no need for an additional gesso layer.
      For your underpainting, you can indeed use acrylics over the NAAP and then proceed with oils. However, it's important not to mix NAAP with other coloured acrylics. Instead, complete your underpainting with acrylics on top of the fully dried NAAP layer. This will ensure the best adhesion and durability for your painting.
      We understand the budget constraints regarding coloured primers. A practical tip is to tint your initial layer of NAAP with a small amount of acrylic paint to achieve a coloured ground, which can be a cost-effective alternative.
      I hope this helps, and happy painting!

    Hi, can this be applied directly to watercolour paper and then paint with oils over it? Or should the paper be sized first?

    Is this supposed to create a surface similar to a lead oil primed canvas without the drying time issues? Does is wipe back to white while you're painting? Does it provide the luminosity that an oil ground does?

    • @MHPaints
      @MHPaints  2 роки тому +1

      It will not feel exactly like a lead primer. It will not wipe clean. Yes it will be luminous because it is white

      i think it wipes out quite well. i often use a wipe out technique for the intital sketch and NAAP works well enough. its a huge leap forward compared to any other acrylic primer for this type of work. i perwsonally like the surface, its not as slick as the lead primers i have used but for me that a plus. the tooyhis very slight and can be rubbed to reduce if required. though i personally like it.@@MHPaints

    Hi, this looks great! Can you mix in some acrylic colored paint to create a ground tone or do you recommend doing that on top after this dries? Thanks!

    • @MHPaints
      @MHPaints  9 місяців тому +2

      I'm glad you're excited about using our product! Yes, you can mix acrylic colored paint into the primer to create a ground tone. However, I would recommend being cautious about diluting the primer too much, as excessive dilution can impact its performance.
      If you decide to mix in acrylic coloured paint, start with small amounts and gradually add more until you achieve the desired tone without compromising the consistency of the primer.
      Feel free to experiment and find the approach that best suits your artistic vision. If you have any more questions or if there's anything else we can assist you with, don't hesitate to reach out.

    • @kiritsi100

      @@MHPaints thanks for the reply. Maybe safer to wait until after the primer dries and then do the ground tone in oil paint thinned with 50/50 mix of OMS and linseed oil and let dry for a day or so?

    • @MHPaints
      @MHPaints  9 місяців тому +2

      As we haven't tested this specific technique just yet, I would recommend conducting a test on a small sample or canvas to ensure you're satisfied with both the results and the overall experience of the process before committing to a larger piece.
      Feel free to share any specific colours or techniques you have in mind for the ground tone. If you have more questions or would like to discuss any other aspects of your painting process, don't hesitate to reach out. You are also welcome to email us via our website.

    Do you recommend sizing raw linen before applying MH Non absorbent Ground?

    • @brchtklmn
      @brchtklmn Рік тому +2

      MH doesn't recommend using rabbit skin-glue. So in that case: no. A size can have two (or three) purposes. A size prevents the oil coming from into contact with your linen (strike through). But any acrylic ground (like this one) does that job. Another purpose of a size is to make your linen stiffer. RSG used to perform this task, and there are a few other sizes that do the job as well. Of course, applying more coats of acrylic ground also makes your linnen stiffer. And then there is a 3rd purpose, which is to block SID (Support Induced Discoloration), but this is only useful when you paint your entire painting in acrylics.

    How long should the second coat of primer be allowed to cure (dry) before starting an oil painting on top? Thank you!

    • @MHPaints
      @MHPaints  Рік тому +3

      Apply a second coat once the first coat is touch dry (approximately 1 hour). You can begin painting on the second coat after an hour, but it is better to wait 24hrs before painting :)

    is this non acrylic Primer should be applied above rabbit glue , or sizing surface. and can we apply gessu above non acrylic primer.

    • @MHPaints
      @MHPaints  Рік тому

      NAAP may be applied to linen, wood, MDF, and other supports to produce a strong, flexible, permanent, and highly pigmented ground. It’s suitable as a ground for both acrylic and oil paint.
      Do not apply over rabbit skin/hide glue or to unsound, flimsy supports such as cardboard.
      Note this is a primer, not a gesso. Gessoes, sizes, or other ancillary products are unnecessary alongside NAAP.

      @@MHPaints i saw multiple persons suggest to size both sides of birch panels before so it doesnt warp, like gac 100 or pva before oil ground or any other gesso or primer, so if you dont recommend doing sizing, should i just use this primer on both side or just the front is totally okay ? thanks :D ( just bought the pozzuoli red earth and i LOVE the color but since i also bought 0.3mm birch panel i'm worry it could bend with time if i only apply 2 coats of primer only to the front, i'm not an expert and there is so much diverse opinions everywhere about that i'm kinda lost ahah)

    • @MHPaints
      @MHPaints  3 місяці тому +1

      @@carolinebeaudoin92 You may apply NAAP to both sides of the birch panel. This ensures uniformity and stability without the risk of warping. I would not use a Multi-Purpose Acrylic Polymer sealer that was glossy, or PVA product in preparatory layer of an oil painting including Gac 100, Gac 200.
      Good luck with your painting endeavours, and enjoy exploring our lovely Pozzuoli red earth colour! Best wishes, Joelle Harding
