- I saw a picture demonstration of this and had to share it. It's such a fantastic tip! Great for emergencies or for someone that simply cannot afford diapers.
If you are in need of diapers and low on funds, you could easily stock up on cotton shirts at a thrift store, buy pins or a snappi for a few dollars a cover for around $10 and be ready to go.
For washing, you'll want to use something that is cloth diaper safe. My recommendation is to DIY. I use a cloth diaper safe detergent (powder) that is very easy to make and inexpensive too. It cost about $30 to make all of the detergent you'll need to cloth diaper your baby from birth to potty training (maybe even more than that!) You can find that recipe here:

I havent seen a Real Cloth Diaper here in Japan,we only have like a cute cloth covering for disposable,Thats why i have never tried cloth diapering my kids.Since i joined UT last year i have met so many moms with great ideas and learned about CD.This is the most fantastic video i have ever seen!I have Tons of cotton t-shirts,which i barely use anymore.This is just the perfect solution.I would really love to try this.my 5th son is turning 1 on the 23rd of this month.

I absolutely love this idea! I wish this would reach more people. This is the perfect solution for those who can't afford disposables or the start up cost of cloth diapering. Love!
On the other side of things - if this were used in an emergency with a shirt that I wanted to wear again, if it just got wet you could wash normally - like any other clothes. If it were soiled... that could be harder to remove stains and I'm not sure I'd worry about it at that point. Washing as usual and drying in the sun may remove any stains.
A great great idea...I know a lot of us WANT to cloth diaper but the start up cost can be so off putting. Plus the ka-jillion choices of super cute (but super expensive) "designer diapers" are such a temptation....!!! This makes so much sense plus all the $$$$ you save could go towards kiddos future college fund.... :)

This is so neat. Never thought of using old t-shirts. I was looking for a tutorital on SEWING CDs out of Tshirts when I found this. I made a video on using receiving blankets as CDs.
This is awesome! Never even thought of this! Love it! I have been cloth diapering for 11 months, and I wish I had thought of this when she was tiny, and I only had a few cloth dipes starting out.

@rebornlove15 It's called a Snappi. Some people like them better than diaper pins because they are worried about poking their baby.

If I were using this full time as a cost saving effort, I would keep a dedicated supply of tshirts (maybe stock up on cotton shirts at a thrift store) and wash them as I would cloth diapers. I make a cloth diaper safe detergent that is very affordable ($30 for nearly a 5 gallon bucket's worth and you just need 1-2 tablespoons per wash day) I'll add the detergent link to the video description.

+Deshaun Baldwin You wouldn't have to add any additional absorbency unless you wanted to, but you would need a cover. They can be picked up used for $5-8 and purchased new for about $10-14. A few is all you need.

I don't see how this wouldn't leak. Its not waterproof. You would need rubber pants over it.
+Katie Chaos You would certainly want a cover. New covers are made with PUL and work much better than old style rubber pants. They run $5-14/ea depending on if they are purchased new or used/brand/etc. A few covers are all that are needed as they can be wiped clean after each use.
