Particularly nice burst, they just keep getting better and better. I wanted to say thanks; thanks to you and Ben Crowe I started building guitars during the shutdown. An LP with a lizard burst, a la Big D, started the ball rolling; followed by an ES-125; then a strat that for some reason just really makes me happy. Now I'm working on three more LPs. Kinda got hooked. So, thanks, I needed something to do in my old age. Er, I mean, second childhood. Thanks for the inspiration.
I have a raw PRS quilted maple top body and been trying to determine weather to go with red dye or yellow. This is the best of both worlds and this will be what I do with my build. I use Keda dyes and have had great luck with them. Thanks for this Vid.
It looks great I love how you almost said" I probably shouldn't have done that" but don't worry man no matter how long we've been doing this stuff everybody accidentally does something they didn't want but it's easily fixable good luck on the guitar build off.
Leather paint works great on wood too. I just thin it out. I use ironlak liquid acrylics to change colors. I have used the dye too. That works really well, as you know. Good video man. Thanks for sharing
Love your work and channel...I've learned so many things from you ty! One thing that confuses me tho, is why you don't also stain the cavities...even if it was just black...would make the finished product look even better.
Beautiful! Although I’ve done a LOT more leather carving than guitar builds, I like leather dyes for both quite a lot. I’ve used Angelus’ dyes and acrylics, and Fiebing’s as well as the stuff Tandy Leather sells. Fiebing’s USMC Black is the blackest of the black! Not even light can escape it’s pull!😂 They (Fiebing’s) also have a slightly darker red called Oxblood that is my favorite red to work with. You might like it, too. Good luck in the build-off!
What clear coat would you use with this? I'm building my first guitar and using your videos to finish with Angelus dyes and am really learning a lot! Thank you for putting all of this out there for us, it really is helpful!
Nice job , I want something to do like this but I’m building a spalted Maple LP one now . I LOVE THAT ! Maybe an SG ? Mmmmm Maybe ? Mmmmm ! The wheels are spinning
Hi there, awesome finish man!! BTW do water based dyes work for this too? And if so should I let my water based dyes dry first before putting on the next layer? Thanks
I think the amount of red on the margins is the key to success with this type of process. It turned out _okay_ but overall, I wonder if applying the red only about 3/8" to 1/2" in from the perimeter would help you acheive a bit longer of a fade in, hopefully with fewer hard lines. I also wonder if this dye can be applied with a spray gun...
Hi there. If you wanted to make the grain really pop, how would you go about it on this kind of burst? Putting black over the yellow then sanding back would maybe be a bit harsh / extreme? Could you use another darker colour? Brown maybe? Just trying to think of something that would go with the overall yellow / red burst vibe.
I live in California and they only ship Angelus VOC dyes here. Does this affect the outcome? Do I need to use water with the VOC dyes? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Love it! Hey can I ask how many guitars you get out of one can of Mohawk Sanding Sealer? I’m in Australia, it’s crazy expensive to get, but there are no other similar products locally.
Hey Derick, I just rewatched this video and it gave me an idea. The natural orange created in this burst could somehow be adapted to create a PRS style Copperhead Burst?
Hey BigD! New subscriber here! I'm about to do the same project same dyes. My question is, will the sanding sealer give a traditional les paul glossy finish? Or should I use something else? Doing this as a gift for my brother, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Derek, I was checking out the Angelus site, they offer a 12 pack, you pick assortment. what would be your 12 choices for all around guitar work, I lean toward Burst finishes and want to experiment. After watching the video earlier, I would say the wood trend to the darker side, I have right now! I am looking for some new wood now, I have a few things going!! For the GGBO this year!
I noticed the cutout for the controls acts as a natural barrier to blending the burst in from the bottom of the guitar up towards the centre. I wonder if making a temporary insert to cover the control slot would make it easier to bring the burst across better?
I was wondering the same thing as well. I think Derek rushed this a bit, and as such he didn't really think out the pattern, and sadly I think the burst on this one is a minor fail. It's blotchy and doesn't have any refined shape. The colors are great though, and the back turned out perfect. Reminds me of the back of an old Rick.
purchase the dyes here: angelusdirect.com/?rfsn=566896.75dad582
Hey Big D. Do you know where the customer got that guitar body/kit? It looks really cool. I love the offset look.
Tonebomb store on Ebay
Really really nice! Awesome job. Thanks for posting.

When the final yellow goes on it's like the opening of a treasure chest and a golden hue glows out. Or something :)
true. like that comment
Working with dyes and wearing a white watch band. That is confidence my friends! Big D rocks.
haha yea time to get the black one.
I'm a Dude watching a video of a Dude rubbing the wood of another Dude.
Dude
Careful, you guys will summon Harry Miree
Wow
Would have never thought to to yellow first and as the “finish”
This explains why my first foray into burst didn’t go so well
Mille Grazie!!
Very professional and beautiful
That's a nice finish and cool shape.

Just with the yellow it got amazing
Glad to see you back to these vids! I was getting frustrated with the recaps and talking!
It looks great I love how you almost said" I probably shouldn't have done that" but don't worry man no matter how long we've been doing this stuff everybody accidentally does something they didn't want but it's easily fixable good luck on the guitar build off.

Love your work and channel...I've learned so many things from you ty! One thing that confuses me tho, is why you don't also stain the cavities...even if it was just black...would make the finished product look even better.
So yeah, I'm going to do this!
Cool. And, nice hat too.
Always fun. Thank you sir.
Wait, are you saying the body cost $99, or that you are finishing bodies for people for $99?
Finishing bodies for people for $99

Great job Big D! Keep up the great work! You make it look easy....

Très joli travail 👌
Sweet Thanks 🙂
Very nice.
Awesome as always !!
👍👍👍 bravo!!! It would be great to see you doing sunbursts on acoustic guitars..... 🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞

It scared me at first with the harder red line, but you made the blend work great and it turned out really nice 👍
yea I know what you mean!
What kind of clear coat finish would you use here?
Haven't seen any true Cherry Burst paint jobs like a true 60's or 70's Les Paul Custom Cherry Burst. Any Videos of that?
that body is really cool
That would look awesome on a les paul junior style body with a figured maple cap on a mahogany body
Nice job , I want something to do like this but I’m building a spalted Maple LP one now .

This is definitely a repeat kind of vid. Looks bad ass, the back is out of this World Awesome... BigD going back to the basics... Bravo Bro!!!
Yea I have done a couple of these they are nice

Sweet!
Nice!

Hey man, nice guitar came out nice. You might try using an airbrush next time, it comes out much smoother, in half the time..
It's not about going fast, it's about grooving with the wood.
Do you sand off the sanding sealer before finishing with oil or poly?
Hey Derick, I just rewatched this video and it gave me an idea. The natural orange created in this burst could somehow be adapted to create a PRS style Copperhead Burst?
Was the ash past filled?

Gotta use sealer to lock in the color. The. You can finish.
@@bigdguitars thanks! Suggestions for the finish?

hey buddy. I would buy red brown yellow green blue purple neutral black orange dark blue and dark brown. probably get 2 blacks
Thanks, much as you use yellow, figured it was the one, that needed extra. But black makes sense too.
Thank you, Spike
hello, can you make a tutorial on how to make something like an "unburst"
Why don’t you use wood dye ?
Great tutorial mr D you mentioned not to spill the red dye from the side onto the front what's the best options to do if that happens reguards steve
Try and wash out with neutral.
What body style is that?
what paint do you use sir?

If you aren't sanding down to 800 grit, you aren't sanding. It sounds so rough when you apply the stain.
What about pure alcool instead of yellow as a 'red mover/blender' ? Like water in watercolor.
I would have kept it yellow for myself, I don't have a yellow guitar 😢
which mohawk sanding sealer did you use? catalyzed or non catalyzed?
Catalized.
@@bigdguitars - thanks!
What paints did you use for this guitar?
I noticed the cutout for the controls acts as a natural barrier to blending the burst in from the bottom of the guitar up towards the centre. I wonder if making a temporary insert to cover the control slot would make it easier to bring the burst across better?
I had another thought: What if you repeated the burst on the sides as well? Do you think you would have enough space there to carry it off?
I was wondering the same thing as well. I think Derek rushed this a bit, and as such he didn't really think out the pattern, and sadly I think the burst on this one is a minor fail. It's blotchy and doesn't have any refined shape. The colors are great though, and the back turned out perfect. Reminds me of the back of an old Rick.
Not seeing it.yet
I just watched your episode red and yellow sunburst . Do you cut the dyes with water or is it straight up thank you
Does the ash on the back have a grain filler on it to level it out before you dye it?
hello thanks for sharing, a question, is it ink to oil or alcohol? Regards!
What exact dye colors did you use? Angelus has a brick but not a red.
too many ads! Learned something though.
@13:00 making me feel better about myself ;) end result is all that matters
Too bad Angelus don't ship to Canada
Ain't gonna do it for me sorry brother 😪
This guy is a great woodworker but his burst finishes are shit!
