Since you love this salvia, give salvia amistad, salvia black and blue or salvia amante a try. The colors are stunning, the blooms are bountiful and the hummingbirds will love you for planting them.
Plant Profile!!! What a great idea Janey. You go girl! 👏🏻
I have four of these in my garden and they are beautiful! Last year I decided to rearrange my plants and, as you said, the stems are very brittle and I ended up breaking several. Be careful when you handle these. I also brought 2 plants inside for the winter just to be safe. It turned out that all four survived my winter in zone 7b even though we reached single digits for a couple of days. Love Mystic Spires!
I stumbled upon Mystic Blue Spires at my local nursery in April 2022. This has been a fabulous preformer in my Southern California, zone 10, garden.
What a great idea 👏👏👏👏 I also LOVE this plant ❤️ I grow mine from seed every year they are really easy to grow from seed !! Have a wonderful day friend ❤️
I'm a new gardener. I learned the hard way that there is a difference between perennials and annuals and there's a difference between zones.
I bought one 3 years ago. And it Blooms whole year
Love this video and agree it’s a wonderful plant. Salvia Big Blue is similar (I actually prefer it to Mystic Spires), and it can be grown from seed so saves $$. My Big Blue plants are a bit taller than Mystic Blue, with larger spires that are a richer purple. This year, mine started flowering in mid/late July from seeds started in March. Is perennial in zones 8+.
Whete did you buy the seeds?
I love this plant. I have it as a backdrop for my DA Rose Gabriel Oak, which is a cool mid pink, and the two colors look gorgeous together.❤ Thank you for the video!
Thank you for your in-depth video. I just bought this yesterday. You are very informative and also inspired me to plant some dusty miller beside it for some silver kick. Your combo looks beautiful together!
This is a great idea to include your experience with the plants, and do the research for us. Thanks for all the wonderful information. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you Tammy! I’m glad you like it! Have a great weekend my friend!
I love them with my tall zinnias and Saturn…the yellow is beautiful with it or white and purple…a true winner
Love this idea! So helpful! Been thinking about planting this here in my SoCal garden [zone b]. Thanks for finally convincing me to do it!
Janey, I just loved this video! I actually have a beautiful crepe myrtle in my front yard that gets hot zone 8b Alabama sun all day. I have been wanting to plant something around the tree. I will definitely give it a try! Thanks.
I love this idea😃!!!!! Thank you for doing this. I have a small garden in zone 7a, and of course, I do my own research before buying plants, but I like that you will have a quick reference list for us. I really appreciate that you include what animals that the plants are resistant to. Many other garden channels skip over this piece of information. I deal with both deer and rabbits and I have had to pull out quite a few plants because the rabbits and deer munched on them. I adore your channel!!!! It is informative and FUN for amateur gardeners like me.
Very concise and informative video thank you! It’s obvious you gave this type of content a lot of thought. For future profiles you may want to include potential pests and propagation techniques. Look forward to the series 👏
Ooh great idea Colleen! Thank you! 💗
Great that you are doing this. You can never have enough knowledge about plants, even if you're a seasoned veteran. I love that plant but haven't been able to find it in my area. I'm doing a test with some other salvias to see if they can help keep Black Spot away from my roses. Saw this on a British channel and seems pretty popular over there. But I love all Salvias. Thank you for sharing. Virginia, Z7a.
Oh I’ve never heard of that Fredi! Let me know how your experiment goes!
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat I will!
Great idea!
I keep seeing sizing and spacing specs for Mystic Spires that have wide variations. I realize that the version being sold now in nurseries was released as an "Improved Mystic Spires" back in 2018, but some articles are relying on the specs of the pre-Improved version, which was quite a bit larger than the current version. Some people will say to plant 12-18" apart as a bedding plant, while others will say 2-3' apart. I have been having mine 16-18" apart for the last 4 years, but I then start to wonder if they are too close together.
Love this thank you Janey!
Yay I’m glad you like it Adrienne! Have a great weekend! 💗
I love your videos helpful 😊
What a timely video for me Janey - I just planted them in my garden! I am becoming more and more of a salvia enthusiast as I also live in zone 9b. Do you ever try to propagate them and if so how?
Yay I’m glad you got some Monica! Yes I’ve propagated them just by taking the bottom leaves off, using rooting hormone and sticking them in soil! It takes a while for them to root but they’ll do it!
I'm in zone 8 Texas. It doesn't happen often but, will this come back after a hard freeze in the single digits?
I thought it was an herb. I was wrong? Where would I put 2 not in my vegetable garden?
Thank you. This will be great series. Saving to my play list. Xx
I am really frustrated with my Mystic Spires. Certain plants seem to thrive while their direct neighbor plant dies. It comes back but dies after a month (grey, withers). So frustrating!!!
I love this plant, with one exception. I’m in zone 10 and it gets bud worms badly. I spray regularly with bt, but all the nooks and crannies in the buds mean lots of escapees. I’m pretty sure it’s the souther pink moth. Does anyone else deal with budworms on these?
Oh no! No I’ve never dealt with budworms on it. The earwigs will attack it when they are young for me. Good luck!
I’ve killed 25 Mystic Spires. Always catches my eye at garden centers, but it just doesn’nt work for me. 😔
Love mine…zone 5…planted black and blue salvia annual…did great in the ground with benign neglect…hummingbird magnet…I also love the purple and vivid pink also…in pots they need more water in our heat.
@@kathy5216 mine were in the ground in zone 6b. Full sun. I’ve tried them three times in different locations. Now, all I do is smile at them wistfully at garden centers and keep moving.
I find the black and blue salvia variety to be the heartiest…order way more of those for a fundraiser garden sale I chair…Wendy’s Wish and Lipstick varieties are attractive but B & B has my endorsement!
I'm sure this playlist will be watched, a lot. I have black and blue salvia throughout my garden, I'll be on the look out for mystic now. I'm zone 7b, I don't do anything to black and blue, it spread itself around, and comes back too. Altho, I do think it stinks.
It stinks? Hhaa! I love black and blue so much! Accidentally found it last yr! Amazing! I'll have to smell it😅.
I just bought 3. I’m in DFW Zone 8. It’s says Annual? How can I ensure it returns?
I so agree, I love this plant. Survived the hard freeze and this year's extreme heat in Texas. The bumblebees and hummingbirds love it too! Plus it's disease and pest resistant.
Love the plant playlist. Please add pruning and fertilizing details too. I want that salvia havnt seen it here in Oregon.
Does it handle cold? We get your kind of hot summers ( often over 100 -- very dry heat), but we get cold in winter ( last year's coldest was -14). Zone 6b/7a
I found 2 this year. 10 each. Regret not buying more. Definitely on my list for more next year. Grasshoppers eat up most things but haven't touched these.
Last Summer (2023) we planted 3 Mystic Blue Salvia in zone 9A. Those babes are a beast of a beauty! None stop show of color! IDK when to deadhead yet - and the big bees 🐝 romance them on the regular. Planting more this year.
Would this plant be happy as a container plant?
Janey, I'm not sure which blue salvia variety that I have, but they are annual in my growing zone. Lucky for me, they will reseed themselves. I've only purchased them one year, but I get new seedlings in the same area each spring. At least now that I know what the seedlings look like, I don't weed them out when planting in that area! Have a wonderful weekend! ~Margie🐝💐🦋😊
One of my favorites as well! My zone is 10b and it NEVER stops blooming. I especially love seeing the hummers enjoy the flowers!
You certainly are appreciated.
Good morning. Thank you for all your information on this lovely perennial. I have to agree that it is a gorgeous plant and with the color of the blooms when it is in front of any color of green or darker shades of color the color just pops and it looks like it is in a 3D picture. Enjoy the perennial and hope to see it more in your gardens whether just for planting for bouquets or for just filling in the garden. Enjoy the rest of your day and looking for many other information on other perennials or annuals.
Great looking plant ! did anyone see the hummingbird on the right in the beginning?
#@@130 in the book india got straberry pots
Such a great idea 💡
I love the way you put the profile up on the screen. You should be very proud of yourself for coming up with this. I've watched other gardening videos and as they plant the plant they skim over the whats, what of it, but this is a much better way of explaining the plants profile. Thank you!
P.S.
I love watching your smiling face.
I live in zone 5 in Vermont and its a perineal in my zone as well and comes back every year and very hardy
What garden center do you get these at? I’m near Davis as well
Love this series idea! Would love more in-depth info on bougainvilleas if you’re accepting requests! I think I have a bushy version (vs trailing) and it’s not blooming and it’s just blah. Might be too shady but I want mine to look like yours!
Can you take cutting from the plant?
I have Salvia Mysty, it's one of my favourite plants, it's always so full and lush and full of bees, I've posted photos on my IG account, let me know if you want to see. I also have Mystic Spires but they are newly planted and still small and need more growing to do.
I’m in zone 8A and have Mystic Spires too. I can count on it every year to be the showiest pollinator plant in the garden. The bees 🐝 stay on it.
Also easy to propagate so getting more for your money.
Wonderful idea to profile your favorites since I’m in zone 7. I love the annual blue salvias but would love taller, perennial salvias for big splashes of blue spikes throughout the garden! My two questions are intertwined: does this plant have the typical salvia smell? I am so wishing for a nice blue salvia for cutting that has some vase life. But, the typical salvia smell would limit it to garden use since people can’t resist taking a big whiff 🤭😂🌿🌟 Regardless, Mystic Spires Blue Salvia jumped to the top of my wish list for its landscape value!
Thanks so much for coming up with this idea! It will be so nice to be able to refer to a plant list from my own zone (also 9b, SoCal)! I've only used salvia a little and wasn't that wild about it. But I really like this one you're profiling! Thanks again!
I'm so glad you announced the Mysty Spires version! I wasn't aware! Would LOVE to get my hands on a more compact version of Mystic Blue!
These are, hands down, one of the top work horses in a mild climate garden! Bloom like crazy, always covered in bees, only fussy if the soil stays too moist over time. I have moved mine about 4 times in the last 5 years, it has kept trucking without missing a beat! Mine is starting to die out in the center now, so I want to try my hand at dividing if it's possible! Always trying new things in the garden to learn!
This is exactly what I was looking for! I have moved to a new home with a naked lawn. I have been dreaming of a cut flower garden and have been scrolling through UA-cam trying to learn about cut flower gardening. 💕💐🌸🌺🌹🌷🌻🌼
That's a great idea, Janey! I look forward to seeing all the plants you highlight in your Playlist. I also love Salvia. The plant I have definitely needs to be deadheaded but it is easy to do except I need to watch out for the bees when doing it. Last year I had a beautiful yellow wave petunia in front of my dark blue Salvia and the contrast looked so beautiful. I was so sad when I came out to look at it and my whole petunia plant was gone, the gopher took the whole thing! That's the other nice thing about Salvia, gophers don't eat them. Enjoy your weekend, head for the coast! 😎😁
Hi Janey, I love love love this idea of you constructing a catalog/profile of plants...making it easier for the rest of us. At the moment I have notes scattered everywhere of the plants I want to try/have...so you are providing a great service. Thank you.
Is the take trip salvia
total newbie gardener here. amazing video!!! I have been searching everywhere for anyone who talks about why my salvia split down the middle and fell over with a hollow, brittle stem. now it makes sense. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly. When you say you cut the plant all the way down for winter, what month do you do it and when you say "all the way down" what do you mean exactly? I'm in zone 10a. Do you cut it so low, there is only a stick left? My plants look like a mini trunk for a few inches and then foliage begins. Do I cut above or below that? Thank you for helping :-)
Cut it so it’s about 2” above the ground, so all you will see is 2” sticks! I usually do this in early December here in California.
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat Thank you for getting back to me so quickly!!!! :-)
Out of my zone 🙁👎🏻. I’m a 6b
Bummer Rosie!!
Hi Janey! Love the idea of plant profile videos and will look forward to seeing and learning from them! One tiny suggestion would be to use colored text rather than white in the light gray description box - the text was a bit difficult to read. Also, hearty congrats on being chosen to participate in the garden tour next year - well deserved!!
Thank you so much for that feedback! I will change for future videos! 😘😘😘
Such a great idea! I’m always looking for companion plants. You have the best ideas. Thanks Janey!
Thank you so much Deb!! Have a great weekend!
I just got 6 back to the fuchsia salvia but now I think I need to get some of the mystic spires! And I agree something yellow next to it would be so beautiful!
I'm in Zone 9 in Japan, and 'Mystic Spires' is my favorite perennial. I've got five of them, and they not only look great when it's hot and sunny, but they also put up with Japan's rainy season. We've had 39 cm (15.3 inches) of rain in the past 30 days here, and 'Mystic Spires' looks none the worse for wear. Bumblebees love it and harmful bugs usually leave it alone. 'Mysty' is not so great in my opinion. I bought it by mistake once and was disappointed.
I'm surprised that black and blue salvia isn't a favorite of gardeners. I accidentally planted 4 in the perfect spot and oh my word I've already bought over 30 this yr and ill just have to share them around the neighborhood! They are small. That one you have in that pot looks amazing...wont see any like that for a couple months here! But ive got all these 4 inch potted ones but I will go buy big ones too. Im obsessed!!!! I tried growing from seed a few weeks ago too..they didn't come up. I think what I like about black & blue is the foliage isn't as dense! It is a very airy fantastic plant over 4ft tall! And the stiff black stems....absolutely amazing and I hope to repeat the look. The 4 i planted seem to be coming back up here in 8b barely anything peeping out of the ground yet on April 4th!!! I kind of went overboard and might have ordered twice 12 plants from same company plus my other online companies! I've gone nuts over them! Im going to plant a few behind a new bunch of roses im planting also along with a few other salvia kinds ,( blue chill, back to the fuchia etc!)
You can find the other variety Mysty Spires in Sonoma! Just found them here at my local nursery.
Thanks for the video! Great idea! Could you also please mention the scientific name of the plant for those who don't live in US? Thank you!
I grew my salvias huge. Not knowing that it would not survive and I can't bring it in. I live in zone 5. I'm going to try it outside and see if it survives
I have one i planted 4 years ago. Just prune the old wood out every autumn and it blooms all through winter for me. So gorgeous
Thank you for doing Plant profiling, Janey! I’m a new gardener and so many times I’ve searched plants and this will help me so so much! You’re an inspiration! 🪴 🥰🌻
This is of my top five plants too. Love it and blooms for so long. Great idea for plant profiles Janey. 👍🏼🙂 Have a great day xx
Hi Janey love the new idea could you consider adding if the plant Can be grown from seed or cuttings to the information you provide for your series. Thanks a bunch
Love that you’re doing this! I save all your videos bc I look back. Thanks so much!
It would be very helpful if you could write out the sizes in centimeter also for your followers outside the USA :)
I love this video! I was actually looking into this plant after some of your previous videos and I’m so glad that you did a focus video on it now! I definitely want to add it to my cool and calm themed flower bed! 😍 and yesssss a white supertunia would be delightful!
Hi Janey 🌺 thanks for this good information about blue salvia plant l love this color .Have afantastic day .🌻
Lady I’m a big fan have been for years.
What a great plant! Thanks for this playlist of plants to get for my new, warm, southern garden :)
Yes, that is one of my favorite plants. I have a hedge of them planted in my front window with Truffala in the front of them! I have so many bumblebees on them all day long into the evening!
I forgot to mention I'm talking about the Salvia
Going to add thi to my garden when temps drop down a little. Thank you Janey.
Love this idea!! Thank you!
Good idea! I'm always searching for plants that work well in our zone 9B. Thanks! 🐞M
Thanks for watching! Have a good weekend! 💗
Loved this video and love the Plant Profile idea. It will be so helpful when looking for a new plant when I can't think of any that will work in my spot. Fellow 9b here but in Florida. Have a great day and thanks!!😊
Thanks Janetta! Have a great weekend! 💗
What a brilliant idea to highlight great plants. I love this salvia too and it has grown HUGE in my garden this year. I wasn't sure how to handle it as it is in my front bed and was beginning to overtake other plants. I cut back some of it and discovered later that what I cut back was holding it up. So now it has flopped over. I just left it was it is always full of pollinators and it is just so beautiful with the blue spires wee all love. I love what you suggest to pair with it and I am going to add some of those next year. I have Helen Stein lambs ears in a side bed and love them. But I may add to one of my front beds with the Mystic Spires and that rudbeckia looks great with it also. So many plants...so little garden space! LOL!
Haha SAME Victoria! So many plant I want in my garden! I hope the mysty spires is just as good because wouldn’t it be great to have the same plant just a smaller size? Thanks for watching and have a great weekend! 💗
Excellent video.
Love it! I love your videos bc I can plant anything you talk about. I think it’s so helpful to have someone like you in your same gardening zone. Thank you!
That’s wonderful Cheri! Have a great weekend!
I could not find salvia anywhere this summer.
Oh bummer Nita!
Thanks!
Very helpful information. Thank you Janey!
Thanks for watching Janet! Have a great weekend!
love this
Thank you for this useful information.
Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend!
This is one of my favorite plants as well.
It’s the best!! Thanks for watching Sara!
Have a great day Janey!
Thank you so much Barbara! You as well! 💗
I love the idea of your new playlist Janey. So, I finally got to see the Mystic Spires Blue Salvia in my sister-in-laws garden, and it truly is spectacular. They look beautiful in your videos, but in person I was blown away. Now I want to get my hands on them for my garden too. 🤗😍
Thanks Jannie!
Thanks Stephanie! 💗
Yay! A plant playlist! Thank you! I’ve been growing salvia for years, and mine never get that size. I don’t fertilize them at all because I read that they don’t like it.😧 LOL I don’t even give them compost…I guess I should be giving them compost at least.🤦🏾♀
I bought a mystic spires blue salvia from your recommendation. Its was a small plant, Its pretty small at the moment, I planted it in full sun, crossing my fingers it gets big soon 💛😊🌼 we are about to go into spring so I hope it lives hot weather here in Melbourne australia 🇦🇺
Mine too !!
