Congratulations to Bruce Johnson on your upcoming retirement at the end of the year. Bruce has been with the station almost 45 years. He's the only left from the WTOP-TV era. Channel 9 will not be the same without you.

WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV) was very first television station owned by The Washington Post Company which purchase back in 1950 under joined venture of CBS and The Washington Post newspaper. Here about history about Channel 9 in Washington, D.C. under Post-Newsweek Stations ownership: CBS and The Washington Post joined in 1950 to purchase WOIC-TV from Bamberger/Macy's. The station became WTOP-TV, the sister station to WTOP Radio. The stations moved into a new facility called “Broadcast House” in 1954. The Washington Post fully acquired the WTOP stations later in 1954. The Post later merged the WTOP stations with a cluster of station in Jacksonville, FL, to become Post Stations. When The Washington Post purchased Newsweek magazine in 1961, the group was renamed Post-Newsweek Stations. in the Fall of 1971 WTOP-TV adopted the “Eyewitness News” brand. In late 1974, WTOP and the other Post-Newsweek stations adopted the slogan “The One and Only. Post Newsweek swapped WTOP-TV for the Evening News Association’s WWJ-TV, Detroit, in 1978. WTOP became WDVM. ending the Post ownership after 28 years. others Post-Newsweek Stations (now Graham Media Group) has once or still relationship with CBS: WJXT Jacksonville, FL (former WMBR-TV, 1953-2002). WFSB Hartford-New Haven, CT (former WTIC-TV, 1974-1997). and WKMG-TV Orlando, FL (former WDBO-TV, then WCPX-TV, 1997-present).

I heard some excellent v/o's done by Bob Dalton, John Douglas, Bill Neal and Mike Lewis. All were terrific staff announcers at Nine. Before coming to Nine, Neal was a morning man on WBAL radio
(then a music station) in Baltimore. Douglas was also a weatherman
from 1956-70. Renee Chaney was also an announcer at Nine whilst working at WGMS,too. She was perhaps the first female to do so.

Nine has the most call signs of any D.C. station (WOIC, WTOP, WDVM and W*USA). When Nine started in 1949, it had the CBS network; there was a proposed television network the Mutual Broadcasting System was going to start, but it never really got off the ground. The MBS Network was going to be a companion network on Nine.
