Beautiful, well done. One of my favorite tunes that keeps me reminded of the movie theme: to stay sober, no matter the substance. A film masterpiece with Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon. You guys play it masterfully. Wish I'd been there in person to hear you. Keep the tune in your repertoire, please.
This guy plays the guitar as I like to hear it-saw him on a Jazz cruise and he had a great tenor player in his band Mike Roothan I think he was called.
I am not reluctant to say Henry Johnson has to be accounted in the top 3 guitar players in the world today. His taste and presentation of this tune reminds me of the days of Wes Montgomery, though in quite in his own distinguished way. This is Excelent guitar playing--" Days of Wine and Roses."
Look, the bass player was great ; but you know what ? there is a time and a place for everything. You would think, after hearing Henry Johnson put on such a performance like that ,that it would be in bad taste to pull out all your stops on your instrument and even enter into strata that you don't normally go just to show how versatile you are. I personally think the bass player was out of place and should be sacked from that band. On the other hand, the drummer could be a little more punchy and swing a little better. Bottom line, HJ could be doing it by himself ---solo guitar playing. He is that good and his gears are that good. There is no better sounding guitar around.
That's like saying that when Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie played together, Dizzy should have deferred to Charlie and kept his solos simple. This bass player is every bit a match for Henry and I'm sure they dig playing together.
I still dont understand how he gets that crisp sound out of his setup. Not to mention his phenomenol playing. Reminds me of Wes Montgomery. Top drawer.
Days of wine and Roses are very popular Jazzstandard. But there are so different arangements among jazzguitarist. Bill Frisell dont use fat cords in his playing only 2-tone and 3-tone(triads) chords and connected with some short single runs and alot of spacey delays. I really like Henry Johnson's arangement. Sounds like Wes Montgomey.
Splendid ! That's all I can add. Too bad sound is a tad crackly. Bass excellllllllllent !!! Drums correctly played and nicely understated.... Very Great stuff here !!! LOVE IT !! MH, Los Angeles
The best rendition of "the days of wine and roses, on guitar that I know; and I don't believe anyone can top it. If anything, they might be able to immitate him ,somewhat, but it wouldn't be the same. Even if Henry played it over again , I know it would still be great, but I don't believe he could top this version. Now the bass player is a complete ass, because he doesn't seem to recognise who is the Star of this show. Personally ,If I wdre Henry Johnson ,I would definitely let this bass player go, he was trying to rival the Star of this show.
I don't understand why that bass player is trying to steal the show after Johnson has rendered such an impeccable piece of guitar playing ? I think he should fire him. Seriously. not a good guy, not withstanding the fact that he is a good bass player, but you don't try to outperform your star.
I am not at all impressed by the bass player simply because it is already acknowledged that it Henry's show and that stuff he is doing on the bass is for another show. After all it was because of Henry why he was here in the first place. Now he is trying to put on his own show. He is supposed to be supporting not competing or go put on his own show. There can only be one bull in a pen.
I never could figure out Why Henry was not a household word for jazz guitar. Incredible playing, tone and the entitre thing. Wow.

Awesome! Such a nice and melow sound. I really enjoyed this clip. Thank you for posting it.
Peter Roothaan, plus Chris Foreman on Hammond and the hard swinger Greg Rockingham on drums - great stuff, enjoyed the Cruise as well!
This guy plays the guitar as I like to hear it-saw him on a Jazz cruise and he had a great tenor player in his band Mike Roothan I think he was called.
Wow, what a beast.
Wow, what a great player!

Best version of this tune next to Wes Montgomery's. Your thumb has some magic!
Such beautiful playing!
That Bass player has to be from Another planet. He should be on cereal boxes...

Bill Dickens
