They come with a cylinder with a slot for each needle. This one is a 60-stitch cylinder. I am using very typical hand knitting sock yarn and I am getting about 8 stitches to the inch, relaxed. You can set it tighter and looser with quite a bit of adjustment. If I were to knit with my 72-stitch cylinder, I'd get a tighter gauge because the needles would be spaced more closely. There are a lot of cylinder sizes, and I think I will invest in the smallest so I can knit socks for kids.
