My main camera is the original S5, but I bought a backup GH5 because of two things... unlimited recording and IT WAS CHEAP. ;) Found it for $475, got a few decent lenses for it, and that little camera is magical. I needed a second camera for a project I was working on, and I love the GH5 now. I never used micro 4/3rds before, but at least for the way I work, I can do pretty much anything on that little camera that I can do with my S5. The only difference is that I have anamorphics and all kinds of vintage lenses for my S5, so obviously I'm invested there, but my point here is, micro 4/3rds is fine. No doubt you can shoot any kind of professional film on micro 4/3rds as long as you know what you're doing, so... I'm sure the GH7 is AWESOME, and good luck with your film!!! I shot a feature just using my S5 and two vintage Minolta Rokkor lenses (28mm and 50mm) that recently won a best feature award at the Manhattan Film Festival, so stop crying people. Grab whatever you have or can afford and tell your story. Hell, I have another award winning full length feature film that I shot ON MY PHONE during the pandemic, so yeah... no excuses. Get out there and make some art. We need you!! Love your channel, looking forward to more of your work. Peace
Older cameras are event more relevant with the DJI focus pro kit. Lidar, coppled with AI chips will improve in the near future to the point we do not need inbody autofocus.
I picked up the GH7 a few months ago because my GH5S was starting to become unreliable and I was in the middle of a documentary shoot. So far I love it. I haven't done extensive "tests," just set it up how I needed and went to work. For doc work it has a lot of great features, as did the GH5S. Things like the XLR adapter, 5.8k opengate, and great stabilization, are all features I relied on heavily. The autofocus is pretty damn good but struggles when a powerful light source, like the sun, is behind the subject. The size is also a feature for my style of filming. Even though the camera body is big, the XLR adapter design and native lenses make it more compact than any fullframe alternatives I have seen with a similar rig. Super handy to be fairly compact when you're having to move around constantly to shoot. The sensor size to me is not a drawback at all. There are ways to get separation of subject without crazy amounts of bokeh. Plus showing people in their environment contributes to the story. We need to see the context of the surroundings. I'm personally not a fan of the modern trend to have the background be so out of focus that it's just a blurry mess - this isn't how films used to be. Keep in mind that "fullframe" image sensors are not the same size as 35mm motion picture film. They are 50% larger. Motion picture film went through the camera vertically, whereas photography film was fed horizontally. "Fullframe" width is 36mm. Motion picture film width is 22mm. Super 35 film width is 25mm. Micro 4/3 width is 17.3mm. Micro 4/3 is actually closer in size to 35mm motion picture film than "fullframe." Factor this in when reading about f-stops and focal lengths used in classic films. I was recently shooting on boats in a bay in bright sunlight, and couldn't get enough ND filters on the camera to have super shallow depth of field. I had an 8 stop ND and still had to use f11 at times. Even at f11 not everything in frame is in perfect focus. If I wanted super ridiculous bokeh it would have meant a lot more gear and set up time for not much reward... Most importantly the audience doesn't care. One of my most successful short docs was shot 16 years ago on an old camcorder with a 1/2 inch sensor. I just released it 2 years ago, and not once has anyone complained that there wasn't enough bokeh.

GH7 is a great tool and having the best tools to do the job allows one to focus on other things.

I've never needed to erase the background of my work, on the contrary, I always need more depth of field to give context. It's very funny that people think that making a portrait is erasing the background. :) I really like the idea of getting the gh7. but I don't have enough money.
Greater depth of field is not everything and doesn‘t make a movie more interesting. If a movie is boring it‘s not because of to less blur in the background. I‘m currently fighting with me if I shouldn’t sell my S5IIX and stay completely with M43 again because it‘s more than enough. If you test a 35mm 1.8 it will have more background blur than your 16mm Sigma, but not by much. So as you said in your video: start using what you have 😉

@@martysender5539 Yes, I tested the GH7 in depth compared to my GH5.
