  • Garbage City - Cairo's dark and dirty underbelly. It's home to 50,000 Coptic Christians that make their living recycling the city's garbage. Why only Christians? Because they feed the organic waste to their pigs - and Muslims won’t touch pork.
You can learn a lot about a city from its trash. In Garbage City, they don’t just sort by garbage type, but also by brand. Among plastic bottle collectors, there’s an “American” pile.
    • What one piece of garbage is sought by almost every collector?
    • Cairo recycles over 85% of its garbage - more than any other city in the world. how did the Garbage People create such an efficient recycling system?
    • Why was the swine flu so devastating to Cairo’s Garbage People - even though no pig ever tested positive in Egypt?
The Garbage People don’t just collect garbage - they remanufacture plastic forks into chairs and cans into shiny metal sheets.
But there is always one catastrophe away from starvation. First it was swine flu. Then the Egyptian government sold the garbage collection contract to foreign corporations. Lately China has stopped accepting recycled plastic.
When the Garbage People don’t work, Cairo’s streets overflow with waste.
But there is hope - and community. The Garbage People send their children to school, and dream of getting them out of garbage city. They've created a community with shops and cafes - they even have a mayor (unofficial). And they built themselves the world’s largest Coptic Christian Church - drilled out of a cave in the mountainside. More than anything, they are a strong community with deep family ties.
Many of Garbage City's residents would live there even if they didn't make their living off of trash.

As a still photographer since 1981 the composition and camera angles were great and well thought out, this is why I love film photography every shot is planned and good exposures to the negatives also you've exposed the reality of fake, rich people with silver, gold and trash. but yet we cry and suffer because my Starbucks coffee is at $9.00 every morning being very careful not to spill any hot coffee on my penny loafer shoes and Polo shirt. Great Job.

Wow - another great video. When we lived in Cairo, a Zabaleen came round our house and picked up our household garbage for a small fee.

Developed countries and developed areas in otherwise developing countries need to learn that sweeping trash under the rug is not a solution.

Karin I think you should try to make some ads for your content. Your channel is criminally underrated, and all you need is a little exposure!
Videos like these boom on UA-cam.

This was so well presented, and even with a wholesome message at the end ^~^
Honestly if you are ever able to upgrade your gear (better video quality and Microphone quality) i'd say it might be worth it to try and work with a bigger UA-cam channel to get your content out there!

Thank you for the compliment! In fact this is an excerpt from a series I produced for PBS/Nat. Geographic. The footage is broadcast standard but it gets significantly degraded when it's compressed for UA-cam. Also, that area is quite unfriendly to outsiders so I often had to shoot from the hip to avoid upsetting anyone. I'll try harder next time! :)

I'm not a big fan of recycling but I do think we need to do something about the poverty of these people. These are filthy conditions to be living and working in. #CLEANUPEGYPT. In the future I have read that we will be melting down most of our trash in nuclear reactors and sending the rest of it on a one way trip to the Sun.
