Agreed. How western TV animation has generally trended towards less detail, rendering and colours on screen (at least as far as characters go), inverse to the growth of digital convenience and ease, is something that confuses and bothers me.

@@harrypartridgelive yes exactly that fact of technological growth and decreasing difficulty should add to the performance of animation, like look at the stop motion animation studio laika. Once 3D printing became a thing they were able to increase the number of faces and range of motion they can give there characters.
I think the problem is how the west views animation as “for kids/not a serious medium” for the most part so they don’t take it seriously and just want it done quick and cheap, because if you actually give it time or money then we can get shows live green eggs and ham

I hate it when channels that cover certain franchises, like Gundam, try to apologize for how “old” a series looks or was made. Gundam 079 will always be a masterpiece
And yes, even the quote “lost episode”, because while the animation was the shows lowest quality, the story was still quality, and it’s a shame that Bandi and sunrise try to bury it

I feel like people should also be more aware and acknowledged about the Hannah Barbera film "Rock Oydessy".
It had very good animation that could rival the Disney animated films of the time, a great soundtrack, good voice acting from Scatman Crothers, and well drawn backgrounds and special effects. If you minus the unnecessary scene where executives added in Hannah Barbara footage of yogi bear to the tune of a Cover of Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". Other than that, it's a very good film. But unfortunately, do to executive meddling and disagreements due to a scene that made them unsure about the film, movie rights to the songs expiring, it only got one showing in the U.S. and that was at the 1987 second Los Angeles International Animation Festival.
This along with Swat Kats should be considered significant because it showed that Hannah Barbera had more to offer than cheap limited animation. The animators had the skills, just not the budget.

I have mixed feelings about this. C.H. Greenblat seems like a decent cartoon creator, but his approach to Hanna-Barbera characters doesn't seem to work. Genndy Tartakovsky, or Craig McCracken do a much better job at replicating H-B characters than Greenblat does. Also, people are entitled to their opinions about old cartoons that didn't have good production values, but to bend over backwards to defend a new cartoon that they haven't seen yet sounds asinine. What if it turns out bad? Will these people continue to stand by their claims of it being great? I just can't grasp this 'blind loyalty' to large corporations.

This series doesn't look half bad if you ask me.
I was a fan of Chowder and Harvey Beaks and I like C.H's work a lot.
I'm familiar with some of the older Hanna Barbera cartoons through re-runs on Boomerang in the early 2000's but I'm no super fan.

Glad to see you back on twitter man and loved the vibe of this unedited video overall. Honestly didn't even know much less here about this show til this video so yeah the animation industry needs to work on getting the word out for this stuff above all else. But from what you showed yeah they need to at least try with these shows because people even kids are tired of this bland simple style. Especially in adult animation like jesus some shadows wouldn't kill you.

I feel like this may screw over CH Greenblatt also. Now don't get me wrong, Chowder and Harvey Beaks were good shows, but they were his own creations that mesh well with his humor. What's funny is there is an online animator that i can think of that can be a better fit for designing/animating the characters. The animator is know is called Cleverclover productions and despite his style being a bit reminiscent of comic strip art, his animation makes up for it by emulating the styles of both Looney tunes and Hannah Barbera. Especially his recent stuff. Another thing I want to point out is that this reboot came during the wrong place at the wrong time.

    (Heads up, long comment here)
Definitely late on this but, well said Lio
As someone who also loves animation(in fact my dream is to become an animator/director) and grew up with various forms of animation and watching/reading behind the scenes on various movies and shows(even autobiographies from the likes of Hayao Miyazaki and most recently Don Bluth), even I know that animation is something that is very VERY difficult and especially now extremely talented artists or writers are not getting their proper credits because of how the industry is(not to say all of animation as overseas; though Japan also has this problem as well; you have both studios and artists who create some incredible works of art and are properly credited)
One of my favorite documentaries is "Waking Sleeping Beauty" and it shows how the animators/artists/writers at Walt Disney Animation were just seen as the red-headed step-child for a long time after the passing of Walt Disney and how it took a group effort of all of these people and others; such as Alan Menken and the late great Howard Ashman; to come together and ended up starting what would become the Disney Renaissance and how such classic/timeless movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King came to be.
Especially with Beauty and the Beast(which is also my absolute favorite Disney movie) they show and discuss how the original pitch of the movie would have been which....no; but especially how everyone put their blood, sweat, and tears into this movie and especially Howard Ashman who never saw the finished film due to passing away from AIDS but told the producer of Beauty and the Beast; Don Hahn; "I would" when Don told him that he knew that the movie would be incredible and he couldn't believe it and the movie ended being shown at the New York Film Festival; it was under "work in progress"; and how the film received a ten minute standing ovation from the audience and well, the rest of that story is animation and film history.
It seems to me like when people try to defend something for whatever reason; can range from anything; these are usually people who don't understand the process of animation and how it is a bitch to work under corporations who value profit over wanting to tell a story; sure every so often you get some incredible animation even from a large corporation but it's not as noticeable as back then. Also I do agree on you with the comments saying stuff like "well if you think it's bad, do it yourself" to which even I have to say "alright then, show me YOU can make an animated short just to prove your point" if they cannot then perhaps they should look into the animation process and industry a lot more than the surface level
I'll admit that I'm a traditional/hand drawn animation fan(mostly because I grew up with that) but even I have seen digital animation evolve and create some amazing stuff; just look at Arcane; or incorporated into something; The Iron Giant and Princess Mononoke come to mind; but again it takes time and effort into making something as grand as Arcane or Princess Mononoke and with the animation industry right now(especially here) that's not the case sadly
Once again, absolutely agree with your take Lio(also on the "CalArts" comment; so did John K make that comment to dunk on The Iron Giant? Man, not only is the dude a freakin creep but truly a petty asshole)

I've watched the trailer a few times and I'm a little concerned about it, the one thing I don't like about it and it's becoming very common almost default with an older property is changing genders of some pre-existing characters just to pander exclusively to the audience. idk jellystone's artstyle is perfectly fine
comparing it with an H-B action cartoon from the 80s doesnt make sense. this is a comedy cartoon, made by the creator of chowder who also storyboarded spongebob. its better to compare it with something else. and a totally unrelated comedy cartoon from the internet isnt a good comparison either. yes, they were only 4 people, but they had much more time and again, they were aiming towards something different, while jellystone does not need that much details, shadows, etc because they would just look out of place and distracting in a comedy cartoon about old H-B characters (that never had stellar hyper-detailed animation like some other action cartoon). the jokes in ch greenblatt's shows are usually just random things, and his artstyle fits perfectly for that kind of comedy
you also made another point about twitter getting mad for a few small animation errors
first of all, it was that guy who got mad about that, and people were like "tf are you talking about" which is an understandable reaction, some of these arent even animation errors, like "ooo the line is missing there" when its part of the artstyle, the lineart is incomplete or purpose so his point doesnt even make sense
