I love how the G3's microphone is better than some UA-camrs' dedicated microphones
Loved the video! Noticed a lot of your software were later releases (iLife 09, iWork 09, Mac OS X Tiger) and this is really pushing the hardware on such an old computer. These iMac G3s and early G4s work best with Mac OS 9. Stick to software that came out around 1998-2003 and you'll do a lot better :)

Try it again, but with debian and more ram.
For future I'd reccomend trying Minecraft for Raspberry Pi on lower end systems as a minecraft test. It's written officially by Notch, and it's just written in Python and is designed for a system not a magnitude of order more powerful than the G3, given it came out for the original Pi not even the B especially. Even similar ram.
It's not written in python, it's c++

Nice video, but you were really swimming up stream with the software you tried to run on that machine. Selecting more period-correct software and lowering expecations for modern computnig use-cases would have given you a much better experiance!

When Halo was released for the Mac, I remember it running quite slow on a system meeting the minimum requirements (800MHz G4, 32MB VRAM), I'm surprised it ran at all on the G3.
Oh my god, it's actually Mac84! I was amazed too as it's sluggish on my G4. In the setup it actually displayed a warning saying it didn't meet the minimum requirements, but unlike games nowadays it actually let me install anyway! I'm a huge fan, thanks so much for your comment!

That G3 microphone actually still holds its own. Better than 95 percent of computers I've used. I love these little experiments, definitely keep doing more!

Machine in it had slightly faster (but still g3) processor, 1gb ram and SSD. Not really rocket speed, but quite good for my eyes ....
I have had great success making mail work with gmail on old computers (Windows 98 Outlook Express). I dont have any idea why you had so many problems
Yea I'm not sure either, I've been able to get stuff working perfectly on windows 2000 & xp! It's possible I was just missing something with the apple mail app, but it refused to accept my Google login on every attempt!
@@techmw1988 my guess would be you've gold old versions of openssl on there or they are calling older libraries on the system and it physically can not understand the response from the server, because it can't decrypt it, and possibly the server can't read what it's saying either. A lot of devices this old are effectively useless online unless you can fix it as older versions were depreciated across the net after some high profile vulnerabilities.

I would recommend to you to replace MacOS with Morphos and suddenly you would be able to do a lot of tasks you wanted to do.
morphos doesnt work with imacs g3
openbsd would be best option
Even Linux doesn't support this thing anymore. If some random distro still does (in late 2023), it's either very obscure at this point, or everything to install with that distro has to be compiled manually from source code..... every...... time. Ain't nobody (at least no casual) got the time to do that. Do YOU wanna compile everything from source code (on the PowerPC)? You can have kids, they'd finish college, and have kids of their own, before compiling anything on the iMac G3 would finish.
I only bring up Linux because it's really the only way to get modern email working.
So...I'm guessing it's more profitable for UA-camrs to make "old gear is useless" rather than "old gear can still be used" videos?
