  • Join us for a day in the life style vlog in Tenerife! Monika and I grab a coffee at one of our favourite spots in El Medano- right on the ocean front and with a great view of the kite surfers and wind surfers.
After that we head off to the supermarket to pick up some bits for the picnic, and I show a few examples of the cost of food in Tenerife (including the cost of wine!).
From there, we pack up the Triump[h Bonneville with pans, food and coal for the bbq and wrap up in winter biking gear and head up towards Mount Teide, above the cloud line, and to a beautiful picnic spot of Area Recreativo El Contador- just outside the start of the Parque Nacional de Teide and Parque Natural Corona Forestal. It’s a brilliant spot, with public toilets, BBQ spots, tables and chairs, bins, and all beautifully maintained. We fired up the barbecue and had much of the place to ourselves.
The temperature differences are huge in Tenerife, because of the volcano of El Teide, there are many micro climates. We went from the warm south of the island (23 degrees on the day we filmed this) which is shorts and flip flop weather all year round (places like Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes, Las Americas and over to El Medano), to 13 degrees at the picnic spot. It's one of the best things to do in Tenerife in my opinion.
The road up to El Teide must be one of the best driving roads in Europe- there are a huge amount of motorbikes and quad bikes whizzing up and down and making the most of the beautiful roads.
And we saw a lot of classic cars! Old Mercedes, classic BMW 3 Series, and a lot more.

Hi Freddie, spending a day with family or friends having a barbecue is typical in the islands. The blue bird is the Pinzon del Teide (Fingilla teydea) is endemic to Tenerife. That recreational area, as it is called here, is called Las Lajas and not El Contador, which is another recreational area in another part of the island. I was walking through El Medano last Saturday, it's a shame I didn't see you, hahaha. Greetings

I had a 17 corsa diesel from new for 6 years and I put 220k on it and that included not driving it for 12 months during lockdown. Eventually the ECU went but apart from that it had been fault free, it still had original clutch and exhaust. I always changed the oil and filter every 10k because that's the life blood of any ICE vehicle. Mike and Lynda Cheshire

    Hello again Freddie / Monica.
😂😂😂😂😂. This time Freddie, the National Geographic hires you to make ornithology videos for him.
Advice for the next time you heat a Spanish omelette in the pan, "don't put so much oil on it"; since you are frying the tortilla and you make it absorb more oil than it really needs. It is simply putting a little bit so that it does not get paid and burns. But the best omelette is the one you can make yourself (there are many tutorials on UA-cam where you can learn how to make a good Spanish omelette).
    Greetings guys.

Hi Freddie. Althought there are some places in Canary Islands where you can find cave houses (you can even rent), most of those caves near the road were digged by the road builders as refugee against climate or just for storing their stuff. Some of these caves are still used nowadays by farmers or locals to store their stuff. If you make a ride along the old road to south (carretera vieja del sur) you'll see lot of them. And its a very nice ride itself, anyway.
By the way, you have to make local friends to really enjoy a bbq. I nearly die when I saw you frying in that much oil and eating that supermarket omelette 😂😂 Anyway, the important thing is that you enjoyed your day here in Tenerife 😉

I once had a 1.1 Ford Fiesta (Firefly model - lots of extras back then) that did 331,000 miles. It was a 1989 model, I bought it new from the dealer and owned it for 11 years until someone reversed off their driveway into it when it was parked and they wrote it off. We towed a 12ft Sprite caravan with it for family holidays, it took us back and forth to Scotland (from Suffolk) where my wife is from, did 40 plus to the gallon on a run, and on a good day would just about do 100mph on the flat.

Hi Freddie, I had a 1995 Ford Escort GT Hatchback that I got 295,000miles , before giving it away. It was still going when I gave it away. I've seen many car's with over 200,000mi. Back when I was younger ( I'm 70 now) if you rolled over 100,000 mi. you were doing something. Nowaday here in the states, many people don't think a thing about buying a car with100,000mi. on the clock. That's what technology has done. That said I hate the new car's of today. I wished I could go back to the 60's & early 70's when the car's had style & originality. Plus I could chase the girl's all over again (lol). Keep up the good work as I enjoy your video's. Another fantastic video, I'm not really into bikes but love seeing different places and the old cars. BTW did you know you don't have to tip the coal out of the bag, you can just light the bag, it is paper!!

Hi Freddie.I have seen simmilar 'caves' in Africa where the locals have been digging out a substance called Kaolin, which is white in colour, used in some paint products but more so in treating stomach ailments, perhaps they are where local folk have been digging to collect the clay for home made remmedies.

Great stuff again, guys. This is why I love Tenerife so much - it can be hot/warm at sea-level, & cool/cloudy/misty at altitude. Have you tried the cablecar up Teide yet?

That's one long old drive down to through Spain and then across to the Island of Tenerife. From London it's 2 days at least. I guess with Freddies optimism anything is possible. Where is Monica from originally? Enjoying your pieces to camera Freddie!

Interesting to get price comparisons at Lidl in Tenerife - especially whisky, but I would guess only popular brands like Famous Grouse, not malts. Can't blame Monika for being a bit cautious about the caves - who knows what's in there? Probs an ancient bungalow. I did shudder slightly at the amount of coal on your BBQ and firelighting technique which you did at least admit! "This is not going well" - marvellous understatement from Monika. Still waitiing for the Attenborough nature show...

Those caves can be either to store wine or shelters for forest rangers. If there aren't any house around, it's probably the second one.

180,000 miles: impressive. Makes you wonder why motorcyclists are so amazed by high mileages on bikes. This surfing town: I know I keep going on about it, but if you like this sort of thing, you'd love the west Algarve. I won't mention the place again. LOL! Chilly place for a barbecue.
    Another interesting, well produced video.

I recently stumbled across Buttertubs Pass in Yorkshire , I was told that it got the name as local traders returning from the market would store any unsold butter in tubs in the cool depths of the potholes saving the horse and cart some weight on the uphill struggle home. Possible these caves you encountered had a similar use sometime back in history as they look as though they'd provide good shelter from the sun ?

Hola Freddie y Monika I used to think that Sunderland was way above sea level as it always looked as if you were driving or riding in thick cloud cover when hurrying through.
I then learned that the whole of the population use Vapes as they're cheap and everything fell into place.

Looks like you're enjoying a lovely life at the moment. You need to think about your bbq building. Fire needs a spark, combustible fuel and oxygen. Either gather some old twigs as kindling and stack them like jack straws. Put the firelighters amongst the kindling not on top. Then light them and place the larger pieces of coal on top but leave gaps for oxygen to circulate, until they start to go white then add the remaining charcoal being carefull not to suffocated the bbq. If there's no kindling around put some stones amongst the coals and lighters to keep the from suffocating the fire lighters. Simples. 🤗
