One concern: the wall of the cylinder seems very thin. Can it be shaved? The 2 piece mold would likely leave tiny ridges on the outside of the cylinder, which would have to be smoothed off for a good recording. Commercial brown wax cylinders generally left a wall thick enough, so that, if a recording turned out unsatisfactory, the surface could be shaved for another attempt. Gillett, of course, was writing for amateur experimenters; but it would be more expedient if they did not have to recast new cylinders for every experiment. I look forward, though, to your experience recording and reproducing on your machine.

Yes, the cylinders can be shaved in fact, Gillett designed 2 shavers for his phonograph. The walls are thin but that's how Gillett designed them.
I was going to ask the same thing about thickness and shaving good to see others having a go at making wax cylinders

They are made with the dimensions that Gillett gave for his phonograph. Thicker ones will not fit.
