Mix A is absolutely Glenn's mix. Not only does it sound miles better,, but there's his trademark "shit ton of reverb on the snare" technique that totally makes his signature sound.
It's funny, because in more traditional pop, it works wonders as well :) You can have a loud, dry and punchy kick, and a 50% wet snare, and wetter toms - provided the latter is only here and there.
I'll go with mix A: it's a bit more rough on the cymbals but it sounds more full and modern. The fact that its volume is higher doesn't help in a fair comparison.
Hah yea mix A is definitely SSS, i can't imagine Glenn being so pleased himself with the sound of the mix B kick, but both sounded really good for 60 minutes to setup, record and mix... and i imagine Glenn has vastly more experience in making quick decisions about a mix. Thanks guys, love to Lewitt and SSS
this was really cool, liked both mixes, feel like Mix A was a bit raw, and Mix B went too far with a "safe" sound. that being said, its really really really amazing how you guys pulled this off in the time
@@DudeMcGuybro Did I say it was perfect and nothing needs to be adjusted? Heck no. But for one hour including mic placement, recording, mixing, it feels just alive. You can clearly hear how dead Mix B is when you directly listen from the End of A to the beginning of B. Not only the drums are more alive, but also the rest of the band. Track B is so muffled down, 'it's dead Jim'.
Both mixes work, for sure. Mix A has more energy, but it almost sounds a bit too crushed/hyped, whereas B sounded like it was a little too safe, not quite energetic enough, but overall tone I did prefer B. Cool video though, would love to see more like this! Maybe something with Shure?
What a fun challenge! Great to watch such vastly different perspectives. Wow! More than a touch of jealousy at the room you got to work in as well as having carte blanche of all those amazing Lewitt mics. Of the two mixes, mIx A just has more oomph, and definitely feels like Glenn's signature mix tropes are all over it. I'm just a sucker for how Glenn crushes the drum sound. Also, as a Reaper user, it was great to see Glenn just record the drums and then take the stems to his laptop and do his thing.
Definitely going with A here. Sounds much bigger to my ears, the snare has a lot more pop to it as well and doesn't sound as dead. Cymbals I'm more balanced and not as hissy in the top end. Both sound good but A gets my boat
“B” reminded me of the sounds from some 90’s-00’s bands that I really enjoy, so I pick it. I do believe “A” is probably the better one for modern production. I dig this type of video. Good job, y’all
Oh wow. I’ve been in some insane studios in my day. The studio I grew up in was obsessed with upgrading to the newest unit every single time something came out. It was pretty insane. But this studio just looks beautiful. The studio grew up in looked like an 80s space shop, but this looks like a work of art!
i enjoy both for different reasons. the kick in mix B is more punchy and has more weight. mix A's snare is perfect though. more cymbal definition in mix A though. mix A feels like a finished product though, but if we took the kick sound from mix B and put it into mix A it would be *chef kiss*
One hour to record drums reminded me of some of my early serious recordings where each band had a block of 4 hours to track at least 2 songs. Most got to record 3 and some even 4 songs. Time limitations can really boost your productiveness.
Mix A is the one to beat here. Everything is so clear and forward. Nice work! I really want to send this video to my friend that said "these days, the room doesnt really matter anyway." *sigh*
There's more high end in A, I like that one over the other. But I couldn't have done either of them in a day, let alone an hour!! Well done guys, loved this episode!
Mix A for the win! Mix A was also most definitely Glenn and Alex. Great work guys with such limited time! Mix B was more on the safe side, but the lewitt mics still let through the tamber of the toms beautifully. :) Awesome idea you guys!
Big difference - the Lewitt guys treated it like a science experiment with their laser pointers and Glenn approached it from a "where do these mics sound good, where does the drummer hit the snare" etc
Well, you better be exact when setting up room mics in stereo, otherwise you won't get a well-balanced stereo image 🤓 Hope you had fun with the video! 🤘
There is something about the bass drum EQ that I like, in B although I feel like it is more in post. Other than the China being a little washy, everything else sounds there. Really nice... Wonder how much of that is the room mic mixed in. Dunno. Wonder if we'll get a video recounting the options Glenn chose for the speedy mix. What a fun challenge.
Mix A is louder and more compressed(i think), and i find the snare a few dbs too loud for my taste. Mix B is the opposite, and as others noted, a bit too safe. I would prefer something in between of the 2. That beeing said, i lean more towards mix A because it conveys more excitement.Regardless, that is a top video! Looking forward to the next one!🤘
I don't dig the mixes, but mix a sounds better overall, so i would guess it is Glenn's. Mix A is a lot louder (and pumpier), bass also overpowers mix b a bit at times. Would have been easier to "judge" if both mixes were on the same level. Mix b's drums are kinda buried. But for just one hour to do everything this is pretty cool!
Two things. First: I'm pretty sure Mix A is from Glenn's team. Second: I think the drums on Mix A sounds the best. But it's not the reason I think it's Glenn's doing. I've listened to Glenn's work for a while, but a lot of his drum mixing he did recently. And Mix A sounds (at least to me), close to what I heard from him in his recent drum videos. Anyways, great video! Cheers from France! 🍻
I prefer Mix A, despite what appears to be some phase issues with the overheads. It just had more punch, and the snare sounds amazing. I'm gonna take a wild guess that mix A is Glenn's.
I’m going with Mix A as the SMG mix. The cymbal volume sounds a lot more like Glen’s mixes that Mix B. Mix B is Lewitt’s mix; they kept the overhead volume low to try and ensure clarity of the close mics, but for the genre, the overheads sound a bit soft (to my ear).
Gear used: Sennheiser HD800S/RME ADI-2 P FS R -Internet Opinion Only- Adjusted for loudness difference, I preferred Mix B. "A" stylistically might be a better overall song fit. For me Mix A had some unpleasant stuff occurring with the upper bass/low mid transients along with the overly present cymbals. Both have something slightly odd going on with the cymbal attack & release in parts of the mix. Enjoyed the panning of the toms more in Mix B. Anyway, time constraints; nice shootout.
Awesome! Such a fun idea for a video! I've only been watching your channel for a short time, so I'm not sure if you've done this before, but I think it's a novel concept worth doing at least once more. I think it would be cool to have each team roll a 6-sided die, and whatever number comes up, that's the number of mics you have to mic the kit. Or, maybe each team can mic a kit with, but can only use 57s. Also, mix B is my gut feeling pick, but not by that much.
I definitely prefer A overall. They weren't afraid to hit the drums with a little more compression, and they EQ'd the shells for a good top end attack. I actually think the way the overheads were EQ'd on mix B sounded a bit more natural, but the overall level of them could've been brought up in that mix. Very cool video! Always interesting to see more-or-less direct comparisons in how different people approach a mix.
Mix A for the drum sound, Mix B for the song mix. Since it's specified as a drum mix competition, I believe that makes A the winner. A's drums just have a lot more clarity and life to them.
I prefer Mix A because it’s brighter and more crisp. The guitar sounds solid. Mix B seems muffled and far. I’m pretty sure both team are great. An hour challenge for all this, is absolutely crazy (and fun to watch). Looking forward for part 2 😁😈🤘
In short, I prefer Mix A. Great job on both teams' parts, cuz doing all that in an hour is amazing! 🤘🏻In more detail: without reading any comments, and after listening a few times, adjusting for volume level (mix A was overall louder than mix B, but one click of my keyboard volume matched them quite well), I lean towards mix A as "better" for my ears. The cymbals are more present and swirl around my head, and the snare and kick are clearer. I like the sound of the snare in mix B a little more, though.
To my ears, there is a pretty huge volume difference between mix A and B, with A being the loudest. It makes it a little more difficult to not fall for the "loud is better" thing, but having jumped back and forth while adjusting the volume I'd still say mix A sounds bigger and more hard hitting. That being said, both mixes done in an hour is pretty incredible.
Mix A is Team Specter Sound. It has more top end sparkle on the overheads and a livelier kick drum. On mix B you can hear the dampening of the kick by their "foam tunnel".
This video is supercool :) Mix A sounds more "like a record". This doesn't mean that mix B is bad, it just has a bit dull or lo-fi vibe (which not neccesarly a bad thing, some records were pruposedly made like this.) Mix B is like a Justice for All WITH BASS :D (actually with a lot of bass)
Mix A has a brightness that reminds you of Glenn almost immediately. It was also apparent Mix A had a regular kick drum while Mix B had that coffin sound in the bass, which I kinda liked even tho they called it a fail
Fun video! A is my preference. A feels much more present, though still a bit mushy in the lower-midrange. B has nice separation in the overheads - maybe to a fault, but lacks punch in both the snare and kick. Cymbals don't cut enough in either mix, and I would have put the drums more forward overall in the mix for this demo.
Great video! I like A but B is good too, especially with the rush job everyone done. Obviously everyone would have wanted more time but this shows how much time a lot of people waste .
There are things I like about each mix. Mix B kick sounds more genre appropriate. Mix A has more high end, cymbals up. They're both a bit dark on the snare.
After a few listens I like mix a more, feels more open and natural. Mix b was my first choice on the first listen but it was darker after a few listens and I like to hear the cymbals more since there was a lot of it.
I definitely go with the drum sound on A, which sounds much livelier and the stereo imagery is better to me. I wasn't super fond of the kick sound and something about it in B I liked a touch better, though I'd probably like a more aggressive kick than either. Absolutely great video!
Wow. this is great! Listened to both mixes several times. Mix A sounds the loudest and most open to me. There is more top end, but there is a weird phase issue going on with the hi-hat / cymbals in the center? Sounds like they could've been panned more to one side. It sounds a little "harsh" to me. Mix B is more subdued, but definitely cleaner. The spread on the drums is better and sounds a lot cleaner. I think it's just missing some high end sparkle to make it shine and this would easily be the winner. I'm leaning more towards Mix A. Just barely though!!
Yep, I noticed the Hi Hat issue as well. For whatever reason I find the snare to not sit too well in both mixes. With half an hour more the tuning should have been a topic.
I love mix A! I prefer the sound of the kick and snare in it compared to B. Also, I'm pretty sure A is Glenn's mix, because it seems like it's panned according to the drummer's perspective rather than the listener's. I remember Glenn saying in an old video that he likes to air drum along to a track and therefore prefers panning it that way
I vote for "A" Bass Drum mix had much better definition. I do wish the snare had a bit more "crack" to it, but that's a personal preference. All in all, a great job Glen. From one dumb ass to another, LOL, thanks for delivering great vids!!!
That's some serious business there. Great work both of you for setting that shit up so quickly. I thought A sounded very full and dynamic. B was a bit rough sounding like there was only 2 minutes left for editing.
They both turned out really good yet very different! Great work by all! Mixing drums is super challenging and to add an hour limit to it?!? Very impressive! Mix A - Glen's, felt a little more pushed and mixed more to Metal. Awesome work! Mix B - Lewitt, seemed to be mixed less and captured the drums more naturally giving it an overall more organic feel, if it was a drum instrumental mix I would love to hear Lewitt mix for that!
Strong preference for Mix A. Didn't listen on headphones, had some Neumann KH120 monitors in front of me instead, haha. Kick and snare punched through well, whereas they felt a bit buried in the other one. Mix B was less crispy and felt less defined overall, but an aggressive mastering chain might help it to sound as loud as the song feels like it wants to be. I err on the side of drums over guitars in my mix level preference though, so as always, YMMV!
I preferred mix A. I did the usual: listen to A, listen to B. Let my ears rest of a while to remove the influence of my head. Listen to B, listen to A. No matter what, I preferred A in both cases. More high end detail and wider stereo image did it for me.
Mix B was certainly quieter to me, especially on the bass drum but both were surprising decent for a one hour contest! I prefer Mix A because it does seem to pop more. Great job everyone!
Thanks again to the both of you for dropping by. It was fun and exhausting indeed...let's see what happens in PART 2 of our epic studio battle.
That was awesome. The Lewitt guys were great. Fun challenge. I have the Lewitt LCT 640. I have had it for about 9 years and I use it all the time.
GG guys! Just got back from a gig with my MTP540. I have it for several years now and it's my preferred live mic!
You guys are doing great things, I have a pair of 140s on my radar!
Mix A is absolutely Glenn's mix. Not only does it sound miles better,, but there's his trademark "shit ton of reverb on the snare" technique that totally makes his signature sound.
I agree, same for the toms. They have that Glenn sound.
It's funny, because in more traditional pop, it works wonders as well :) You can have a loud, dry and punchy kick, and a 50% wet snare, and wetter toms - provided the latter is only here and there.
80's snare with a ton of reverb technique 👍
and that fat kick and crystal highs
@@phantasmich or mult the snare, eq, limit to hell, plate, limit as well - and then tuck it in beneath.
I'll go with mix A: it's a bit more rough on the cymbals but it sounds more full and modern. The fact that its volume is higher doesn't help in a fair comparison.

"Somebody should've been a bass player."
You always sneak 'em in and I love it
If you want to jump between mixes :)

B: 12:04
this was really cool, liked both mixes, feel like Mix A was a bit raw, and Mix B went too far with a "safe" sound. that being said, its really really really amazing how you guys pulled this off in the time
You mean, the mix was alive, not raw, raw sounds different. B on the other hand was muffled dead.
@@GroovingDrums Are you just ignoring the glaring abudnance of 5-10k frequency on track A? That and the kick blended in with the rest of the band.
@@DudeMcGuybro Did I say it was perfect and nothing needs to be adjusted? Heck no. But for one hour including mic placement, recording, mixing, it feels just alive.

It’s so cool seeing Glenn just doing his thing and seeing him making micing and mixing decisions in the moment
Yes, he's definitely such a pro in so many things.
That's exactly what I thought.
Mix A peaked so bad.
mix b sounds a lot more like a demo

prefer the Team A mix, i'm assuming it's yours lol. Drums are lot more clearer there which fits better for modern sounding metal band.
I agree, only sounds a bit phasey on the cymbals xD
Mix B is clearer and more in control. Mix A sounds more up front but the bass is a bit boomy.
Fun video, thanks!

Need more of these challenges. This is fucking awesome. Mix A for sure.
Glenn, do you see that? We really need to do that again sometime! 😁
Mix A: the kick pokes out of the mix a little, I have a suspision this is team SMG's mix. Mix A also seems to have more "width"
Yeah..... got to go with mix A.. Thanks Glenn, you make great content

I only listened on my tv, but mix A blows mix B out of the water. A definitely the winner.
Mix C. Lol. A is louder, more reverb. B sounds a bit dead. You all did an amazing job for the time frame!
Mix A drums are hands down the winner! Much more three dimensional sounding, mixed with depth. Great bass tone too!

I vote for "A" Bass Drum mix had much better definition. I do wish the snare had a bit more "crack" to it, but that's a personal preference. All in all, a great job Glen. From one dumb ass to another, LOL, thanks for delivering great vids!!!
Really Really Really cool video, more like this please!!!!!!
A is Glenn mix absolutely, beefy and punchy yet open up more than B. Good job both team
Mix A without any hesitation , didn't need headphones 😂
Mix A gotta be Glenn's. Awesome video btw!
I prefer B. It's sounds tighter and more punchy than A. Curious to see who mix was which.
I preferred mix A. I did the usual: listen to A, listen to B. Let my ears rest of a while to remove the influence of my head. Listen to B, listen to A. No matter what, I preferred A in both cases. More high end detail and wider stereo image did it for me.
Mix B All Day … what a fantastic video… Love’n Lewitt
Gotta go with A. Not sure if that's the mic they put outside of the room that I'm hearing or if that's synthetic reverb but it's really nice.
Mix A to be is Glenn and mix B is the lewitt guys. Lewitt mics sound great, I use them all the time in my studio
I'd like the symbols of MIX A thrown onto the drums of MIX B :) The rolls went from ear to ear!
Mix B was certainly quieter to me, especially on the bass drum but both were surprising decent for a one hour contest! I prefer Mix A because it does seem to pop more. Great job everyone!
