If you are in traffic and get a regen, put in neutral, rev to 2,000 and it will do it fairly fast. Change my ED Tams oil myself. All newer diesels have too much emissions crap.

I have the 2014 GC Eco Diesel Overland and have had it since new. Like Chris says, if you are doing enough highway driving, it is a dream - LOVE this car. I'm now doing short runs and ugh it is not happy with that at all. Also I've moved from California to Colorado and it is not keen on the cold weather so the combo of short runs and cold weather mean its struggling. I have taken it on some long runs just lately and it has perked up - no surprises there... I have done some amazing road trips - 1000 miles+ and it just cruised, was super comfortable, carried a tonne of c*rap ;) and didn't complain at all. Great mpg. I've also towed largest size trailer from U-Haul and again no probs. A real workhorse. Hope that helps.

Heat burns your coal out of the filter. A little hint....drop it into 4th gear and run it at 2200 rpm and it should cook your dpf clean. 20 minute ride.

I'd say you conclusion on the highway holds fairly true for a lot of diesels. I've worked on a lot of VW diesels over the years and I found that short trips were pretty hard on them even before the DPF and DEF era. By their nature they are slow to warm up and need that run time to get all that carbon blown out, now you have a DPF to catch that carbon which needs an elevated EGT to regenerate and it just can't get that idling at a stop light. I currently drive a 2015 VW TDi and in winter time in the great plains I can drive to and from work 20 miles and my oil temp will barely touch 150F despite coolant being normal. Hardly enough time and temp to evaporate condensation out of the oil so sometimes in the winter, I take the long way home to try to let to oil get up to coolant temp and let the DPF do its thing.

Solution for diesel filter is that drive manual(with shifters) and change gears on high revs. This issue happens generally on automatic gears.

  • @c5back9

“Odd Idling issues” discussed here are likely caused by a dirty fuel filter. Two things to do to really help a lot with this 1) never allow fuel level in tank to go below one quarter. 2) change fuel filter at least as often as called for in service schedule... oh and one more thing. I’m very cautious about where I buy fuel being mindful to buy only from stores that look to be in good clean orderly condition. If the store is old, run down, and a basic trash heap, I assume the tanks and fuel in them are probably the same so I go elsewhere.

When it comes to these modern diesel engines they are very different in terms of the problems you will have vs a gasoline engine. Europe is used to the diesel engines but for most people here in the US they are not very common in vehicles other than 3/4 ton trucks and bigger. The dealerships and manufacturers also don't do a great job of informing the consumer of the different experience that can be expected from them. I currently have a 2011 ram 2500 with the 6.7 cummins, I bought it used in 2015 with 120k on it and now it has 325k. I had to learn a lot about diesels and especially the exhaust systems. I specifically went for the pre DEF model years as the DEF injectors are prone to clogging. The dealership will tell you to replace them but in most cases they can be cleaned and will work just fine. I came across this video because I'm considering buying a used GC ecodiesel summit for family road trips. I've noticed a majority of buyers are like me when I bought my ram, diesels are unfamiliar territory and while they can be difficult at times they are worth it in my opinion. Just be aware that you have to be up to the task of a little more maintenance than you would have with a gasoline engine and its going to be a little more expensive.

Did you end up buying one? If so how did you like it? I’m on the fence about one, if the wife can’t decide what she wants I might take one of those grand Cherokee diesel. There’s one in Houston and one in Dallas, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. I’m wondering how those things will hold up long-term. I do 30-40k miles year, all highway and would definitely do the GDE tune. It’s not a delete just “maximizes” the exhaust emissions efficiency.

I have a '10 2500 Ram 6.7 Cummins and it's at 340k km (sees ocassional towing under 10k lbs) with very few issues. I'm religious about oil/fuel filter changes and it needs ball joints but otherwise, it's been great. I'm currently considering a '15 Eco Diesel Jeep or Q7 but some of the particulars have me a little nervous. I find that with the Ram, we keep it happy by putting our foot into it now and then. I can't imagine missing a regen cycle on the way to the office and being late. Luckily our Ram doesn't need DEF, etc. The Q7 looks great but the ocuntdown issues with the DEF requirements could be messy also. Not sure if it makes a difference still as many fans stay on to cool turbos but... I hae always let our Ram idle a few minutes or more depending on how hard we towed and how high trans temps get. I've heard that running hard/towing and then shutting off deisels can warp heads and cause turbo damages. Is it true in every case? I've never bothered to chance it and it can be cheap advice (i.e. idle truck while levelling trailer, etc).

Diesel cars are for highway driving...not for traffic driving, especially if equipped with dpf. I highway you'll enjoy everything a diesel has to offer in terms of fuel economy, if you tow or haul you'll enjoy the torque....if you do lot of traffic then you'll enjoy issues with your dpf. Had one GC diesel for long time back in Italy...no regrets at all, and of course, again lot of highway speed, often very high european speed...definetly more than crazy 5mph Rome traffic

I think this is a very good review . . . BUT . . . I have a 2016 which now has 31,000 miles on it and I have not had nearly the same bad outcomes as you have. I agree on the fact that you should have more alerts on when you're approaching particulate limit . . . but I only have had one occasion where I had to "keep driving at highway speeds." No limp mode ever. Fortunately, I am almost always able to reach a freeway or other highway. UNfortunately, you also are not provided with any information on exactly how LONG you have to keep driving at highway speeds. Minor inconvenience for me, and only happened once. I love showing off how much torque it has! I've also achieved 33 mpg on the highway once or twice, but it requires more discipline than I'm usually able to muster.

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD with 3.0 liter V6, pneumatic suspension, auto trans. As I say I have achieved 35 mpg on the highway, but that's about as good as it gets. Around town, of course, it's quite a bit less, like 20 or 22 mpg. Maybe worse, if I'm aggressive. Big tank, big range. @@DartanganMartin-id4gf

I have the say Yr/ and averything. By fate ? ?? I went to Chrysler and was asking about oil changes and service. I ended up buying oil changes and services through Chrysler for $85.00 per oil change and service. Take ot to the same dealer and get service for a total of $85. I pay nothing more...If I took it there and paid through the dealer it is $184.00. WOW $100.00 to drive it in the shop?? They calculate this by your mileage. Here it would cost me about $85 to do it myself. And by doing it through the dealer , they have to honer the warrenty.

As soon as you're off warranty, remove all the emissions liberal-treehugger bullshit and enjoy all the benefits of Diesel without issues. You spend $50k on a brand new Diesel Jeep, it better as shit perform for 400k miles. The new 3 0 Eco Diesel equipped Wrangler will set you back approx $60k. Let's hope the new 3.0 Eco Diesel wasn't engineered by complete corporate morons as is usually the case. Look how well the original Eco Diesel in the Ram 1500 did. Engine would grenade itself like clockwork at the 100k mileage mark. I'm sure some asshat will claim their Ram 1500 Eco Diesel has 700k miles and not one single issue ever🙄
