Did the movie ever explain why John Goodman's character left the Navy after 14 years? I figured after 14 years of service most people would tough it out for six more years to retire with pension and full benefits. Did he leave the Navy to start building his shelter?
Occasionally service members aren't eligible for promotion and may leave the service because of that. They may also decide that further service just isn't worth the benefits.

And Elizabeth is also easy on the eyes.

This film was FANTASTIC. Well written and perfectly acted. Biggest probelm? The twist of the film is ruined by the title. Just hearing Cloverfield in the title means this film exists in the same universe as gigantic undersea monsters so as soon as aliens are mentioned it's pretty clear there's aliens. If this film had just been called The Cellar as originally planned and the Cloverfield references were just tiny Easter eggs for eagle eyed fans then this film would have been so much more enjoyable in theaters.
I absolutely loved the this and the first movie. Something about the mysterious circumstances that is thought provoking for me, much like Tenet and Inception do for me. It's a shame Paradox fell short, imo. But I still enjoyed it and look forward to the continuity of this franchise. BTW, anyone else remember when Overlord was rumored to be part of the Cloverfield universe before it released?
So what happens is JJ Abrams will buy a movie that hasn't released because no streaming service wants it, he'll add some reshoots to link it to his Cloverfield mystery box, and then sell it as a shared universe. But like Lost there is no answer, no head writer with an ending in mind, no actual payoff. It's just about getting the audience to ask "what is the connection" and speculate like this online to keep the keyword "Cloverfield" top of the search metrics. An Ingenious marketing scheme that leads to cinematic disappointment.
Way I view it ,is the Kaiju seen in cloverfield is a lost infant,(lost for many thousands years, time that be nothing to such aliens)and the advanced Kaiju in 10 lane are it's parents that have come looking for the Infant, they see humans as vermin that have harmed or killed it's child,so filling the earth city centre's with there version of insecticide, much like how we do with wasp nests.
There is no explaining the Cloverfield series. They're a bunch of movies that initially have nothing to do with each other, until JJ Abrams comes along and modifies the script to make them seem vaguely connected. He makes it up as he goes along, because (just like his Star Wars sequels) he doesn't actually know how to tell a story that's original, and all of his movies have things in them that contradicts something in a previous movie. This movie could have been way better if JJ Abrams kept his hands off it.
There is actually another movie in the Cloverfield Universe that most people aren't aware of, and that movie is "Overlord." Just as the other Cloverfield movies taking place in an alternative reality, so also does the movie "Overlord" take place in an alternative reality of WW2, where US Army soldiers are dropped off in France to destroy a German target to allow for an invasion, but in the process discover a scientific lab where German scientists are experimenting on a drug that they think will win them the war. The movie is part WW2 movie & Horror, and its a great movie, imho. It gets kinda dark but its damn cool. I highly recommend the movie "Overlord." It also stars Kurt Russel's son and a bunch of actors who do a fantastic job. Please give it a watch. Also, the movie isn't an obvious tie in to the Cloverfield Universe as it doesn't contain any references to any of the other movies whatsoever. The reason we know its connected because Bad Robot who made the Cloverfield movies mentioned that its loosely tied, but that it is tied to it, just in a very loose way, in that it too is set in an alternative reality. The people who made it said it was tied to the universe. Its just not obvious. But again, its a great movie.
What if the aliens were attracted by the Cloverfield experiment and came to eradicate humans knowing we were dealing with something we didn't know how to control, and that could cause the universe to collapse aswell as any other universe that was associated with the experiment

14:24 "...people are strange creatures..." 😃
18:51 "...the ugliness of his soul..." ☻️
21:41 "...undisturbed Clover Monster on the sea floor..." ☻️
Thanks Niad 👍
My theory of the aliens are that they are the worms from The Cloverfield Paradox.
Also I like the Jay-Z reference the narrator made.
I love this movie. I love all of the Cloverfield movies. I hope they'll continue to expand the franchise.
Seriously the best explained story and thesis of any movie that I've ever heard. Impressive and well done
Great job Niet ! I loved this movie
I went to school with John Gallagher's sister. The only connection I have to a famous person lol
This is awesome!
This movie was so good even tho a lot of people didn’t think so
I AM ALWAYS WATCHING...... FilmComicsExplained!
1 of the best sequels of all time, one of the best movies of the mid 2010’s.
lmao
its cool that the twist is that the crazy person was actually right this time.
Awesome review of this movie.
Thanks Damian!
@@filmcomicsexplained don’t mention it !
As a native of Lake Charles, I cannot express my shock of the film being set here
2:06 that was a picture of Bradley Cooper in a cameo.
Thats not Bradley Cooper
It wasnt but the phone call was supposedly him, just his voice we never see him
This is like the bad ending for Z is for Zachariah. I loved it and am glad my vote counts somewhere.
Goodman had a rug in that bunker that really tied the room together
Way I view it ,is the Kaiju seen in cloverfield is a lost infant,(lost for many thousands years, time that be nothing to such aliens)and the advanced Kaiju in 10 lane are it's parents that have come looking for the Infant, they see humans as vermin that have harmed or killed it's child,so filling the earth city centre's with there version of insecticide, much like how we do with wasp nests.
I don't think anyone could have done this roll wonders like John Goodman did
There's no way the "I'm always watching." Wasn't a monster's inc reference.
"she's got 99 problems and mobility is 1" 🤣🤣🤣
There is no explaining the Cloverfield series.
Everyone always talks about how scary Goodman is in this film, but I'd argue he is just as scary in Death Sentence.
"She's got 99 problems and mobility is 1" ahahha holy cow dude that's a great one
Bravo, Bravo 🎉 fantastic work.
My year 10 “treat” was to watch this at the cinema, it was a good day and I hadn’t seen it til now :))
i literally watched this move for the first time two hours ago and now this
There is actually another movie in the Cloverfield Universe that most people aren't aware of, and that movie is "Overlord." Just as the other Cloverfield movies taking place in an alternative reality, so also does the movie "Overlord" take place in an alternative reality of WW2, where US Army soldiers are dropped off in France to destroy a German target to allow for an invasion, but in the process discover a scientific lab where German scientists are experimenting on a drug that they think will win them the war.
I finally saw overlord 2 months ago man it was great
"Mystery Bawks"
Never knew they were related but loved the setting so much, lots of twists and turns.
Literally finished this and watched the movie with the family
Great acting on display from all involved.
Do the part 2 of justice league
What if the aliens were attracted by the Cloverfield experiment and came to eradicate humans knowing we were dealing with something we didn't know how to control, and that could cause the universe to collapse aswell as any other universe that was associated with the experiment
This was NOPE before NOPE
NOPE.
I had no clue this was going to be as good as it is.
I think one of the best acts john Goodman has done, he's character was so unsettling
