Than you for the review I wonder if this will work on my garage door with a spring that auto closes the door.
For your issue all you needed to do is pop a pin out off a hung lay it on the ground and smack lightly with a hammer get a slight slight bend in it and it will fix this issue. Did that to a few of my doors, magic 👌

I worry about using it on a hollow core door - the magnet seems to be very strong. ?
Magnet is strong but you can place a bumper rubber boot on the end of the receiver to lessen the strength of the magnet. I have a hollow core door and it is fine for me.
Would it not be better to fix it higher up to avoid it getting damaged by a broom or vacuum cleaner
Very true. You can place it wherever it works for you. I know many that mount it at the top.
