Hongdae on the weekends is full of people sweeping through the streets and there is trash on the streets. However, there is almost nothing rolling around and everything is gathered in one place ^^ If you see it on Monday, it will probably be a completely different street (Seoul City's quick cleaning). Hongdae's weekends are like a huge pub. If you want a clean street even on the weekend, you can visit anywhere except Hongdae. Hongdae is a place where many energetic young people gather. If you get a little bit out of Hongdae, Yeonnam-dong or Sangsu are fine. The back streets of the neon signs are very, very quiet residential areas. This camera only captured a very small part of it. Most of it is very quiet.
Hongdae is the abbreviation for Hongik University, the most famous art college in Korea. Tourists come to Hongdae for its neon signs, but for Koreans, it is also famous as a neighborhood of art academies preparing for entrance exams to art colleges. Many art college applicants from all over the country come to Hongdae to prepare for the entrance exams to art colleges. If you go to the street near the main gate of Hongik University, you will see many art academies and students wearing aprons stained with paint. There are delicious restaurants hidden in the alleys of Yeonnam-dong, a residential area for ordinary citizens. If you want a quiet and secluded Hongdae, look for the alleys.
You probably don't know much about Hongdae until the early 2000s. In fact, Hongdae at that time was a street for artists. It was a very romantic place with delicate and unique features, with various vintage shops, hidden galleries, art shops, artist studios, small theaters, and independent art bookstores. However, the current Hongdae has lost all its character as large corporations' plans take over the alleys. Korean artists are also moving to various neighborhoods around Hongdae, such as Seogyo, Hapjeong, Mangwon, and Munrae, to escape Hongdae, which has become extremely expensive due to gentrification. It is highly likely that artists are infiltrating the lesser-known, older, and cheaper neighborhoods of Seoul. There are more uphill roads than flat areas, and the areas are still underdeveloped. However, art exhibitions have not disappeared from Hongdae. Do you know Alternative Space Loop? It's not that far from the alley you see in the video now, but it has a completely different atmosphere. It's an alternative space standing quietly here. Various artists from all over the world and Korea are exhibiting here. It's narrow and deep. They sometimes hold performance events, so if you have the time, I hope you get lucky and visit. Depending on whether you see Hongdae as a pub, an area of past artists, or an area to buy clothes, the area looks quite different. I hope this helps.Good luck on your trip. 👍
