Marin Alpine Trail XR Review | The BEST Value Enduro Mountain Bike in 2022?

  • The Marin Alpine Trail XR is a burly enduro mountain bike with 150mm of rear suspension and a 160mm RockShox Lyrik up front. These figures may sound quit low for a modern day enduro bike, but with its immensely slack 62.5 degree head angle and overall more extreme geometry, this bike is more than capable for enduro style riding.
    It also comes specced with impressive kit for £3,475 or $3,999, making this bike one of the best value enduro rigs on the market.
    For that price you get a RockShox Lyrik Ultimate fork and Super Deluxe Coil Ultimate RCT shock, many bikes that cost considerably more don’t feature that level of damper. There’s also a mix of higher level Shimano gearing finished off with Marin's own branded components.
    Despite this, it didn't quite take a podium position in our Enduro Bike of The Year test. Watch the video to the end to find why.

    I've been riding my 2021 since early 2021, lots of big mountain trails, I double checked, its still 63.5 HTA and 78 STA (great for the steep climbs we have in the rockies) I ride an XL and am 6ft tall, no problems, the reach is shorter then the numbers would suggest. Its a plowmaster supreme bike, which is quite fun, the value is great, no quality issues.

      Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing your thoughts on the bike! We measure the head angle on our mountain bikes and this is the angle Rob actually found to be true on his test bike. Cheers, Felix.

      The angles change when you sit on the bike or if the suspension is lowered or heightened

    I have an alpine trail 8 from 2020, and ive upgraded everything but the frame and fox suspension. This bike constantly surprises me with it's capabilities. For my first bike I've been able to use it on any trail. It's never felt like too much or too little for most trails and if someone thinks 150mm isn't enough go watch Mark Mathews do some of the most insane PNW riding on the carbon frame version.

      I have the same frame and almost upgraded everything except the gx cassette. I had a specialized status before (the mullet bike) and this bike beats it everywhere

    Bike is great. And your points on spec "issues"are spot on. I changed levers to servo-wave ones, and wheels to more robust and welded ones. That's about it. It sure plows through chatter like a boss.

    This bike is fun and fast. My son races an alpine trail 7 in dh and enduro in New Zealand. Stock bar is very stiff. Tough, progressive bike.

    The spec of this bike for its price is truly impressive. Just the suspension combo is very very good. While I was shopping at the end of season 2022 I was looking at this bike as a top contender as I didn't have a big budget and these were often on special ( I ended finding a Slayer on ridiculous discount and that's what I always wanted lol). BUT I often see these bikes at my local trails and bike parks, alot of younger riders shredding the crap out of them, I see people building them up, New breaks and wheels. Someone let me rest ride theirs and honestly, I enjoyed it, a great defender and I didn't feel it lack suspension and since it was Rock shoxs Ultimate it was a nice responsive and supportive ride. Now I see the 2023 has an ever burlier suspension set up with Bomber Z1 COIL fork and the trusty CR rear coil! which yes may be the best climbing set up but if your hard charging free rider on a budget that needs a dependable no nonsense bike....I dont think you should really look any further!

    Hi there, I’m considering upon buying the alpine trail XR however I’d like to ask about the shorter 430 chainstay length, I’m 6’3 so is this a big enough negative to draw me off of buying the bike?

      Depends on a number of factors I think. Some 35mm bars I've used have been really comfy and totally fine. Others have felt harsh and comfy. And it seems that can happen with alloy or carbon in my experience.

      Thanks for the comment. This is the angle I measured (we measure all our test bikes). Many brands will take their geo chart numbers from the drawing which is fine, but generally, it's not often they're 100% accurate in the real world. I've found alloy bikes tend to have a bigger discrepancy than carbon. The accuracy of geo charts is something our mates at MBR.co.uk did a cool feature on and it's worth checking out.

    430mm chainstay on all sizes is just stupid. (On a big bike like this)

      Is that such a negative?

    • @th_js
      @th_js 2 місяці тому

      @@kacpermajewski81 Too much weight on the rear wheel, which makes the bike sketchy in corners by having more understeer and less stability

    • @kacpermajewski81
      @kacpermajewski81 2 місяці тому

      @@th_js is it that big of a drawback though bc the bike is great in everything else also would the very slack head angle not cancel it out? I’m 6’3 and I really want to buy it but idk if that’s an absolute deal breaker

    • @th_js
      @th_js 2 місяці тому +1

      @@kacpermajewski81 I'm also 6'3" (191 cm in real people units), I would not get this bike being the height we are. If I were 20 cm shorter, sure. I could ride it but not at this height. Though if you already have a long chainstay enduro beast, and you're buying this as an addition for casual trail rides and jibbing around, then I see no problem. 👍

    • @kacpermajewski81
      @kacpermajewski81 2 місяці тому

      @@th_js you see idk man because at this price point this is the best bike I can get by far and honestly I think having a shorter chainstay is something I’m willing to sacrifice as in some instances it makes the bike more playful also my current bike has a 439 chainstay and that feels fine so is the 1cm really gonna make such a difference???
