  • The late Fran Betters has created some of the most notable trout flies in the fly tyers arsenal. The Ausable Wulff, Haystack and The Usual are among the famous flies. The Usual is a simple(ish) fly pattern, tied much like the Haystack, but with snowshoe hare foot pad hair used instead of deer hair. The wing on the haystack is splayed out in a 180° fan and The Usual should have a 45° splayed wing.
The fly is tied using the pad hairs of the snowshoe hare. It may be tied in a variety of different colors including cream, duns, olive, sulfur (yellow) and black. You can also mix the colors to get even more variations.
You can find this pattern and Fran Betters' other fly pattern in his book using the link below. this is a hard to find book now and may be on the expensive side.

Well I see you did pull out the Betters book. I located mine after you said that, I had it in a brief case I put my travel reference materials for tying at destinations. It's been there since my last visit to the West Branch, too long ago! As a bonus I dicovered a book I didn't know I had, International Guide To Fly Tying Materials by Barry Ord Clarke & Robert Spaight.!! All my favorite articles from the 80s - 90s. I think I tied every fly in Betters book except for the "piggy 🐖 back". That caused some controversy back in the day when one of the fly tying mags 🙈🙉🙊 featured a pattern by I believe Lesson and Schollmeyer that was very similar to Betters. 🐷 PBN. Quite a few angry letters to the editor defending Betters as the originater. The next issue had an apology by the authors then a very gracious reply from Betters. His humility is equal to his commen sense genius and master of readily available natural materials. Thanks for posting this, try pulling it under half way through a drift, especially in fast water, it really moves the trout. Good luck fishing with your buddy. 🎣 Cheers! BTW, I paid $15.95 for that book at is shop and he sighed it for me. 👍😀

+Joe Duca Glad that you found your copy. I had another read through after I tied this one. I have a box of Betters tied flies around here someplace as well. Hopefully, I can locate them before they hit a river. That book is well worth the $15.95. I paid more than that for mine, perhaps $40, but it was signed as well 👍😀. I remember the controversy over that nymph, imagine if that happened today. I do think people can come up with the same/similar ideas in fly tying. There are some really creative tyers out there, but most of us have just a few standard moves, myself included. lol

Piscator Flies Hey I had to edit my sentence on Betters ability, didn't make sense, I was in a rush for an appointment. I don't know Darren, I think you have some pretty good "moves", that chum slumber was a great design. You're very knowledgeable and have accomplished a lot. Cheers 👍😎☕

+Joe Duca Thanks! 😎☕ I'm still a little hesitant to tie up some of these iconic fly patterns. I really appreciate the comments and the conversation Joe. 😎👍

Jonathan, thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the fly. That reminds me that I should tie a few of these today. Great pattern for this time of year. Cheers

+wongrs Hey Rich! Yes, I can do that. I've got a couple dozen rabbit feet to use up. Have you been out fishing the area much yet? I had a look for the book earlier today and it was listed around 125$. One to keep an eye out for though. I'll bring it when I come down to visit. :)

Piscator Flies I have fished the area with a local friend. we get out about once a week but the steam temps are coming up and it's basically time to stop fishing trout. I will have to check with others if areas like the ausable if they are still ok. the weather has been really weird here this summer. lots of thundershowers which blow out the rivers on a weekly basis

+wongrs I'm glad to hear that you're getting out at least. It's been the same here, heat and lots of blown out creeks. Just been out a handful of times with the little guy. Was thinking I would be out that way late summer.

Piscator Flies I just heard from a friend that the fly shops are advising against fishing during daytimes for right now. will try to figure out when the daytime temps come back down

wongrs sounds good Rich. I'm jealous of your access out there. It's been hot here too, just fishing a little bit early mornings for now.
