We try to teach them as much as we can as often as we can! Although.. 5 kids keeps us busy so I wish we could spend more time doing it! BUT they will know how to use a wrench and a screwdriver far earlier than I did 😂.
      Thank you, I appreciate you!

Awesome to get the kids involved! I got two of mine to help me out with a kit car. One of them likes to work on minibikes and gokarts now, the other makes stuff.

My girls are 9 and 12 and we still are traumatized from years ago when a predator got some of our birds. Little hearts are the sweetest and the most sensitive. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Awwww poor little guy. I did chuckle though. I freaked out the first time grabbing eggs too. 😂 Beautiful family. That’s a cool box, much more fun than our boring wooden boxes. Fun review.

He was so upset! Once he calmed down I showed him how to do it without getting pecked and although he was afraid, he powered through it! Egg collecting is his chore and he takes it VERY seriously 😂

I built my chicken coop just like yours because of a video you did a while back. Its been a GREAT coop. And it was big enough to allow for that "chicken math" that happened to me. 😂

Oh I have an issue with my nesting boxes and the run. I’ve mentioned numerous times before about the fact that it rains all day long for days and my yard turns into a swamp and so my run floods. And the chickens don’t ever lay where they should. They lay all the way under the coop where I can barely reach it. Because I made their coop out of a large dog crate, I have it sitting on a pallet. Well it works for them getting off the flooded ground but it means I’m using a stick to try to roll the eggs out from beneath the coop because the pallet is blocking me from reaching it. And it means the eggs are muddy and poopy. So I always end up cracking some and I have to wash them. I refrigerate them though. But I have the dog crate covered and I placed two tote lids on top of the covered crate and it has woodchips because they were laying on top of the crate and I was worried the eggs would roll off the top. The nesting boxes are stacked but my older hens will lay in there occasionally but mostly they follow the rest so I’m going to have to figure it out. I bought a mini chainsaw. Chainsaw’s scare me to death but I’m going to cut the pallet so I can just walk up to their area. I may try to get some wooden eggs again but they didn’t pay attention to it the first time. But I’m also going to try to figure out some things. I have to redo their roost I made them in the run. Too much rain and the stick broke apart. They still have another one but this was their favorite. And I’m going to give them something else so they can get out of the water. The entire yard floods so adding rocks or sand might help a little bit, maybe. I do have a clear tarp coming to go over their food and water and coop to give them a chance of not having to be in constant rain. Removing the pallet will open up the space as well.

@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead It is miserable but I'm trying to problem solve. I may not stop the run from flooding or get them to lay in the nesting boxes like they are supposed too, but I can make it a little easier on me. But, I'm trying. It's a part of living in this area...constant rain. It's why I grow in totes, buckets and raised beds and why I have to buy specialty seeds that hopefully can withstand all the rain. But all four of them laid on top of the coop today so I was able to grab the eggs and didn't have to march through the mud and slosh. So that was a win.

That's a nice design. I took it as inspiration for my nesting boxes that are built in to my coop. The entire box is on the outside so I don't have to go in and fiddle around. I've got latches and carabiners to hold them closed.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead

I wish I was handy enough for something like that 😂, I would build a whole new coop and use mine for a garden shed!

@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead I built it to be really simple. I have a cnc so I cut brackets to hold the roof at the angle I want. I also used it to cut the angled panels for the nesting boxes. Everything is osb and 2x3, painted with outdoor latex over elastomeric rubber (well, except the extra predator proofing I put on in a hurry after the bobcat fiasco).
Let me know if you want to see it. I could pdf the hard parts, and you could print them out, glue them to your osb, and cut them with whatever tools you have. After that, it's just cutting 2x3 to length, lining up the brackets, and screwing it all together.

These mats are used as doormats. We have had these for 30years now . They last a long time wiping your shoes daily. They should last a century with rolling eggs. 🙂
@13:05 It will most deffinitively not fold down. The hairs are way to springy for that. The best option is to lower the high end of the mat about 5mm (Hengear design change). For now you'd best just bevel the high end of the mat with some scissors.

Well, we just experienced our first predator attack. For two years we had not seen nor heard any kind of predators at all.
I constantly watched for tracks in the surrounding mud or dust. Kept eye on trail cams. So we started letting them fully free range this past summer.
Pretty sure the pack of dogs came from the new subdivision down the road. So back to supervised free ranging only. Sad day in all regards.

Aw poor little guy, its sore, my rescued pigeon Birdie, used to have a good go at me for touching his feed tray, he thought I was trying to steal his food, which I wasnt, but birds can be quite aggressive. You need to give him some work gloves, he will feel like a grown-up workman and protect his hands at the same time. You need to stress that it wasn't personal and that chickens are only trying to protect their eggs or future babies, tell him humans and all animals are equally as protective and this is how we all survived. He needs to know that chicken likes him fine its just natural to protect offspring!
