    Like the mitre joint idea. Agree rot is what gets most boxes. Anxious to see your results when you make some boxes. Good luck on your splits and your flow. Thanks for your videos. Take care.

    Maybe try a biscuit jointer on your miters. Might make assembly easier and will strengthen an otherwise inherently weak joint.

  • @ThatBeeMan
    @ThatBeeMan Рік тому

    To get that miter assembled "square and true and fast" as you say, set up a lock mitre bit in a router table. One setting will do everything you need. The joint is then a hybrid miter and tongue in groove joint. Easy to assemble as it's self-locating, plenty of glue surface. In short, a very solid joint.

    Had a tick on me as well today... nasty things. Lime Disease is something to be concerned about. With respect to the possible additional splits... seems to me you had a lot of personal things going on that wouldn't have allowed for that anyway. If things had been different... it is what it is. Make up some Fall splits will all those extra bees after the honey harvest to gain some more splits for next year or to cover winter losses. Nice catch!

      @DuckRiverHoney  Рік тому

      Thanks Nancy! I really want to increase counts while bees want to make queens, which will be during the flow. I think I’ll be feeding and splitting my splits.

    As a former high school history teacher I can’t agree with you more. A degree isn’t always a measure of success or wealth. I would stress this to my student all the time and would often advise against going to college unless their chosen field required it because of the debt that comes along with it.
    On another note, I don’t want to say that this series is really inspiring. I got into beekeeping 4 years ago with the goal of one day doing it full time. I forgot about that and watching this series has made me want to get more involved in beekeeping again. I don’t think I’ll feasibly be able to do it full time but I can make the move from hobbyist to sideliner and I’m thinking I want to document it like this. I have a dormant beekeeping UA-cam channel but I’m thinking it’s time to revive it. Check out Ridgewood Bees if you get a chance.

    Yea... I gave up on UA-cam bringing money pretty much immediately. I kept making videos because...
    1: It is EXTREMELY useful to go back and watch what I did and how the hives were at a given point in time (Case in point, last year's video told me when bees started finding forage, so this year I knew when to give em sub and syrup).
    2: I want to help others learn from the point of view of a beginner, showing my mistakes is very useful to everyone, not just me :P

    I want to say I thought your video on the box joints was great! On this video I loved that you brought up college, I feel 100% the same way. Most of the young adults are wasting time and alot of money on college just because they think it's going to benefit them. Oddly I'd never thought about the whole beekeeping aspect like you mentioned, there's so many things that could strike up a career or maybe future college course ideas for the kids in beekeeping. I really enjoy watching your blogs on your business and wish you all the best in the future of it! I'll keep watching!

    My retirement plan is to leave the USA for SEA. Beekeeping does not appear to be as big in the rural or province areas of less developed countries there. There are two species of domesticated honeybees. Also at least two species of domesticated stingless bees. Several studies have been done on having a bee hive with your coconut trees vs not having. Having bees in your coconut grove equals 40% increase. I’m thinking pollination services with honey bees and stingless bees.

    On average how fast will a queen fill a medium with brood, in spring with pollen patty and syrup stimuli? I figured you would be a good person to ask as you run all mediums and would have seen all the spectrum.
    Nathan thank you for another informative video, I love the idea of promoting beekeeping as a profession.👍

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  Рік тому +1

      Well, say a medium has 4000 cells with an 80% fill rate so 3200 possible. Laying rate of 1500 eggs per day, 8 frames takes 17 days to be completely full.

    • @dcsblessedbees
      @dcsblessedbees Рік тому +1

      @@DuckRiverHoney thank you Nathan. If you wanted to use that medium as the split off of a colony in deeps. How full do you let that medium get before you pull it off the parent colony? 70%full rate or around 13 or 15 days so there is some remaining room?

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  Рік тому +1

      It depends on how big I want the split to be, how much swarming pressure there is, when I’ve got cells ready, etc. I don’t know that there is one correct answer there.

    I went to college and got my 4 year degree but never felt like I got the education that I paid for. I am a big proponent of Mike Rowe and his Organization that wants kids to look at alternative educations to support their families. 4 year programs are way over priced for what you get. When you get out of school you are not ready usually to join the work force. You have to learn the job after you get there. On the other hand you can go to a tech school and hit the ground running and ready to do the job with a lower level of required on the job training. Just my opinion.
    I have learned to be a beekeeper by watching UA-cam and by my failures mostly. Beekeeping has been a journey of humility. Weekly challenges with sprinkles of success. Really looking forward to you video with Cory Stevens. Best of luck on your season

    I know of a guy with a degree in Political Science and he is hanging garage doors. Many young people are conned by the schools to borrow money and stay in school as long as possible. Its to the point student loans replace a house payment and many people are unable to buy a home.. I have a degree and work experience as a heavy truck mechanic, employers treat me bad and then cry they can't fill those jobs. I also finished a program in business, never had any opportunity as a supervisor or manager with my training, employers prefer a micro-manager from fast food over education.. Nobody wants to do any physical work anymore and I been a tradesman for a long time; not willing to do other people's work when they are just too lazy.

    My first year for making nucs for customers was 2020. I didn’t understand the extent to which the colonies would bias toward queens they produce via emergency cells. It’s disruptive, but now go through each nuc after the caged queen has been in the nucs for 4 days, shake bees off any frames on which I cannot clearly see there are no emergency cells, and the initiate the candy release. I think ever beek learns this lesson about emergency cells.

    Ideas to encourage more hands on careers: I do a talk about beekeeping for local high school science class. Career fair day (including tech and trade and entrepreneurship) for 5th-8th graders. A local bee club offers equipment for interested teens. My 4-H club has a couple bee hives. Our bee club is doing a Beepalooza for the public and trying to reach more youth - not just conferences geared to adult beekeepers.
