I love the Hummel. Had a himax for a while. You know Hummel was a mini max guy until he lost a foot in a crash. Not a big fan of the 1/2 VW. I’ve lost a cyl in my full VW at least 10 times the fact that I was able to limp home was nice. I’d have been a glider on 2 cyl. They sure sound cool at idle though. Be careful man.
hi when you say lost a cylinder is it a failure of the piston itself ? or the cyclinder cracked while in flight ? or was it an ignition issue on a cylinder ?
Hey there, I'm a total newbie, and I am hoping you can enlighten me - why land on the grass stretch of the runway rather than the paved area? Thanks for the video. It's gorgeous! I hope to own a UC someday, but for now it's just a big dream.
I land in grass because it is less wear on the tires and it is more forgiving if you aren't lined up perfectly straight. Look up a tailwheel ground loop, they are more likely on cement when the tires grip better and there is a cross wind.
@@jennarose856 there are no additional challenges when you fly higher other than dealing woth the colder air. In general the higher you are the safer you are. More time to recover if there is an incident and more time to decide where to land of you have an engine failure

Did you get your UC under 254 with the canopy?
Nice! We finished an AeroVee powered Sonex Waiex a couple years ago and will get back to finishing our Hummelbird soon.
😊😊😅

Another question while I'm at it - what additional challenges are there to flying at that height versus the 1000 ft allowed by the FAA's Part 103?

Sweet, would be cool to record with the phone and layer in soma that sweet flat twin 4 stroke boxer sound from inside the cockpit
Yea, unfortunately once I start flying it is all wind noise
That's not infortunate...That's a wonderful sound.
How high did you get? I got up to a bit over 10000 in my UC. Great video
Nice!
Beautiful footage but the rippling sheet metal is a little disconcerting. Still, awesome flight.
