What you gotta understand about Homestuck is that the soundtrack was HUGELY collaborative and the range of genres is similarly massive. You have whole albums of just piano music, and symphonic albums, plus a Toby Fox solo album, and that is barely scratching the surface, as there are literally DAYS STRAIGHT of music. The main albums, Volumes 1-10, are just big piles of whatever the musicians came up with thrown together, and are always fun to listen to.

Honestuck is one of those things were you can’t just jump into the middle of anywhere, story, fandom, music. The music has so many leitmotifs and references to other songs that it’s almost mixtapes of itself. It’s a lot of independent artists making music they thought would fit various characters and themes or parts of the webcomic. If you’re gonna listen to homestuck music you gotta listen to them based on release date since popularity means nothing in the grand scheme of things
Another thing to pay attention to is most characters have a specific instrument associated with them. So most songs have genre and even instrument choices based around the specific characters which gives all the characters through out the comic a very unique feeling to them. John typically has the Pianos, Rose has Violins, Jade has Bass, and Dave has drums/synths. So what would be just an ordinary song can clue listeners into who’s it’s about as a main character, side character and even the villain of the scene just by the music and instrument choices

people always talk about how good toby fox is at leitmotifs, but you never see anyone talking about how the reason he got so good at them was because of homestuck. since there were so many different artists involved, leitmotifs were vital in making sure the homestuck ost still felt cohesive and toby fox really mastered the craft during his time as head of the music team

Homestuck uses leitmotifing to hell and back. Since there's dozens of people that have contributed music, characters, themes, and mechanics get melodies assigned to each other to keep a throughline. Each composer then adds their own spin on the snippet, creating a chain of musical mutation that's fascinating to track. If you do another video like this, keep an ear out for recurring elements!

    >Context
There are a couple of different leitmotifs at work in Time On My Side that are representing confrontations between their respective affiliated characters. The reason why it shifts from Anxious to Conflict to Heroic to Villain in feel is that it's each character respectively getting the upper hand.
    EDIT:
    "Next one is...Oppa Toby Style?"
Poor man tripped into the final boss fight without knowing what he was getting into goddamn. If you're going to understand the audio for that one at all, I'd say you're either going to have to Read the Comic (probably not happening) or just do a full reaction to the video, which was the finale for the whole damn thing, [s] Collide.

"The indie videogame soundtrack equivalent of the stereotypical smooth jazz you hear like detective film noir movies" You literally could not have gotten the context more on the nose. This song is tied to a character that is that description exactly. He's also such an important character that the leitmotif from Black was, at some point, in almost every other song you listened to in this video, so I'm really glad you listened to it.
Edit: Here's some recommendations for if you do another Homestuck video:
    1) Rex Duodecim Angelus - holy cow please do this one it's so SO interesting.
    2) English - it's present in almost as many songs as Black as a leitmotif. I highly recommended it.
    3) Pipeorgankind - one of my favorites in the comic. I'm just a sucker for pipe organ. Beautiful song.
    4) Eternity Served Cold - saw some other people recommending this, and yeah, you should listen to it. Not even necessarily for a video, just everybody should listen to this at some point in their lives.
    5) Open the Door - Technically not from Homestuck, this is from a tie-in game called Hiveswap, but it's short and really worth a listen.

Homestuck started as pure unadulterated user driven shitpost and evolved into a heck of a complex story with probably the cleanest, most stable and consistent time loops I've seen in any media.
Also while a lot of pieces are more stand-alonish and simple, many others build on top of each other and are so amazing.
Oppa Toby Style is the second half of a greater composition that tells the near conclusion of a whole story, it plays in the second to last chapter of the story in a 16 minute flash animation. Peppered all over the song are tons of leitmotifs that have been part of the story for years, and hearing them back is extremely nostalgic and hard hitting by that time of the journey.

Major animations in the story would have tailor made music that contains the themes for all the characters involved, and the music would transition into that character's theme when they appear in the animation.
That's why quite a few of these feel like several different short songs.

I’ve literally been getting into Homestuck this past week so this video could not be timed more perfectly XD
Also, you could never guess what Homestuck is about from the title, let me tell you.
The vastly shortened summary is 4 kids play a game that ends the world and now they have to win the game to make a new one
But then the full plot is so much more complicated and involves so much freaking time travel and multiple universes and lore and trolls and utter chaos-
I highly recommend reading it, I’ve been enjoying it immensely so far
Act One starts pretty slow, but certainly picks up at the end and Act Two is where stuff starts getting more investing

Something I feel necessary to add in - with how many people worked on the OST, a shorthand for the characters was established quickly with instrument use - Dave is an electronic turntable, Rose is strings, John is piano, etc. The first ost is explicitly linked to Dave, so you hear that sorta sound, and the third one is tied to Rose AND Dave, so you get the strings and the beat.
Also loved the comment about Oppa Toby Style feeling like a retro endgame boss theme. No doubt people have mentioned it already but it's supposed to score MULTIPLE endgame boss fights at the same time. It also consists nearly entirely of leitmotifs.

I would love to see a full readthrough of Homestuck from you, totally uncut. The comic is a bit problematic and outdated in places but it's well worth it for how much of an amazing and wild ride it is. It's over 8000 pages though. It's weird because "webcomic" doesn't fully encompass it. Most of it is dialogue with pictures, but some of it is mini-movies, some of it is actual games, some of it is animation sequences so long they could be a full episode of a tv show. It has such unique writing and comedic style, you'd be hard pressed to find anything like it that wasn't directly inspired by it, and as a writer, it's the single biggest influence on my writing by far. Getting to watch people read it is always a joy. It starts slow but once you get invested you get INVESTED. Plus you'd get to listen to the music with its proper buildup and context where it hits so much harder.

The melody from Black is used in both Time On My Side and Oppa Toby Style, and the reason Oppa Toby Style sounds like so many small songs jammed together is because it reincorporates a ton of other melodies from the rest of the comic. The very first song was played while a character called Dirk Strider proved himself to be the biggest badass in the entire story; the reason it's so strange and piecemeal is because it calls back to/samples a lot of much simpler songs that played earlier in the story for his family.

Homestuck is very interesting, I'd love to see you experience it however you wish to. It's not quite slice of life, though its first Act may initially make you think it would be, but its not quite a full on action romp. it's also sci-fi but not quite, andd fantasy but also not as you're used to fantasy typically. It's it's own beast :3
While it is a webcomic it also, as you seen, have a sountrack. The soundtrack isn't just for show too, many (but not all) the songs are used in the comic via animated segments (thats right, homestuck has ANIMATIONS) as well as ineractive segments that work like games sorta.
Notably TIme on His Side, Black and Oppa Toby Style are featured in aniamtions. THey do contain spoilers as Time On His Side and Oppa Toby Style are used very late in the comic (in fact Oppa Toby Style is one of the songs used in the FINAL BATTLE). They are worth checking out if you don't mind being spoiled. Black for iinstance is used to show one of the initial major villains becoming a major villain in the story (said aniamtion is called Jack: Ascend).
If you wanna stick to the soundtrack itself, I highly recommend Harleboss, Megalovania, Sunslammer, Beatdown (which comes in two versions), Versus, Sburban Jungle, English and Descend (which incidentally is also the name for an animation which the song is used in). I'd also recommend the fan song Ugly Story(which got used in the appropriate scene in the youtube fandub by Voxus)
There's also a few homestuck videogames you can check out too: Hiveswap, Hiveswap friendship simulator and pesterquest (which is a direct sequel to friendship simulator). of them Ithink experiencing friendsim first would be the wildest experience XD

Hi! I just wanted to add something about the instrumentation that I thought might clear something out: there are four main kids in Homestuck, and each of them plays an instrument. John plays the piano, Jade plays bass, Rose is a violinist, and Dave has his turntables.
They are long-distance friends and one of the ways they bond over the internet is by sending each other sound clips and doing little music collabs. Hence the relevance of those particular instruments in the OST!

I was SO surprised seeing this in my recommended, and so excited!! If you do this again I'd love to see you react to the videos that go with these songs, they match very well and it's always fun to see someone experience homestuck without context. Reacting to "[S] Cascade" could be a video in itself, it's 15 minutes and absolutely WILD, great music and visuals

Watching "[S] wake" would also be great, for a certain Toby Fox song you may recognize = )

Does anyone else want to watch him react to Homestuck itself? Even just out of context! Even just "We Can't Fight the Homestuck"! It's one hell of a trip and I would ADORE being able to watch him take it.

Homestuck has some of the most varied and talented artists, including Toby "Yes, THAT Toby Fox" Fox.
Its' soundtrack is so extensive and varied there really is no one genre to it. It's amazing. Love or hate the comic, the music is PHENOMENAL. And all the leitmotifs for characters, concepts, moments, etc.

I would absolutely love to see you continue to delve into the music of homestuck. Some songs you should definitely listen to are indigo heir, spiders8reath, and at the price of oblivion.

    My favorite not-much-mentioned homestuck songs:
    -Feel (alive)
    -Freefall
    -Sound Judgement
-Carolmanthetime (I might just be a simp for carols in music that uses it creatively)
Songs I'm not sure about how unknown they are, but I still think are worth a listen:
-Lilith in Starlight (made up of multiple songs actually, you can look up the music wiki for any songs you're interested by, there's usually listed a list of songs it references and it's referenced in)
    -Ocean Stars Falling
-Of Gods and Witches (careful though, if you don't wanna spoil yourself, some of these like this song have actual images and animations from the comic in them)
-You killed my father (Prepare to die)
    Fanon songs:
*much* of PhemieC (entirely unique songs with lyrics about specific characters)
*much* of Horizon's song's (both new and old; their work ranges from unique songs with lyrics about the webcomic, to putting amazing lyrics to existing songs) (though just a warning, youtube hasn't been that kind to them in recent months, and they actually moved off the platform)
-Flare/Moonsetter mashup (both are well-known songs, but this specific mash-up I'd say isn't that well-known)
-Cool and New Music Team, their stuff can be pretty cool (you may have to search for specific volumes though)
-Land of Fans and Music (also another music creator)
    -Sburban Jungle/Unite Synchronization Overlay
Overall, the homestuck soundtrack is *so* varied with *so* many songs (like, 570 songs), and- you know toby, often there's *many* leitmotifs burried and songs referenced in the later songs to the earlier songs.
Honestly, just the soundtrack itself is just a journey even without the story (and all of the songs you looked at *do* have context to the story, in flash animations that break up the webcomic reading! Though much of the songs, like 95%, aren't even used in the flash animations, so feel free to explore, and I'd love to see more reactions!
