I remember someone once described Oppa Toby Style as the theme your party splits up in DND and the DM is forced to manage 5 different massive boss fights at the same time. This hectic mess where no one knows what the fuck is going on and so much is happening so fast.
Honestuck is one of those things were you can’t just jump into the middle of anywhere, story, fandom, music. The music has so many leitmotifs and references to other songs that it’s almost mixtapes of itself. It’s a lot of independent artists making music they thought would fit various characters and themes or parts of the webcomic. If you’re gonna listen to homestuck music you gotta listen to them based on release date since popularity means nothing in the grand scheme of things Another thing to pay attention to is most characters have a specific instrument associated with them. So most songs have genre and even instrument choices based around the specific characters which gives all the characters through out the comic a very unique feeling to them. John typically has the Pianos, Rose has Violins, Jade has Bass, and Dave has drums/synths. So what would be just an ordinary song can clue listeners into who’s it’s about as a main character, side character and even the villain of the scene just by the music and instrument choices
people always talk about how good toby fox is at leitmotifs, but you never see anyone talking about how the reason he got so good at them was because of homestuck. since there were so many different artists involved, leitmotifs were vital in making sure the homestuck ost still felt cohesive and toby fox really mastered the craft during his time as head of the music team
yeah. like with time on my side it's like, yeah it FUCKS on its own but it really gets good when you're like oh! oh thats beatdown!! !! oh shit liquid negrocity!! ??!
A blind reaction to the cascade animatic from homestuck (including the music) would probably be pretty cool. Cascade literally broke the internet when it came out, the reception to it was huge. The music for it is amazing.
I doubt it would have anywhere near the effect it has having read up to that point (which is half the damn comic) so it would have to be a whole blind reading.
Nice. Homestuck is something else. Very slow start, then pulls a twist with reality changing elements, strange weapon concepts, and trolls fighting each other and basically the devil. Edit: Would be interesting to see you react to the fight videos from Homestuck. Sorry, just wanted to say.
Homestuck uses leitmotifing to hell and back. Since there's dozens of people that have contributed music, characters, themes, and mechanics get melodies assigned to each other to keep a throughline. Each composer then adds their own spin on the snippet, creating a chain of musical mutation that's fascinating to track. If you do another video like this, keep an ear out for recurring elements!
Homestuck has an absolutely phenomenal and wildly varied soundtrack. I would definitely look forward to you listening to a few more! Some recommendations you may find fun: - Sburban Jungle - Ohgodwhat Remix - Doctor - Karkat's Theme - I'm A Member of the Midnight Crew - Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse - MeGaLoVania (yeah. You heard me. Capitalization is relevant)
>Context There are a couple of different leitmotifs at work in Time On My Side that are representing confrontations between their respective affiliated characters. The reason why it shifts from Anxious to Conflict to Heroic to Villain in feel is that it's each character respectively getting the upper hand. EDIT: "Next one is...Oppa Toby Style?" Poor man tripped into the final boss fight without knowing what he was getting into goddamn. If you're going to understand the audio for that one at all, I'd say you're either going to have to Read the Comic (probably not happening) or just do a full reaction to the video, which was the finale for the whole damn thing, [s] Collide. Final edit: That all said, if you Do opt to go through a bit more of this? There's 43 Albums all tied into this without even going into fan songs. Plenty to work with and the styles are as widely varied depending on which character, part of the comic, concept, or place within the story they're tied to. Colours & Mahem side A is a fantastic example. >Dramatic Orchestral >Spanish Guitar Western >Soft Electronica >Historical Gregorian Chants >Flute/Piano mix with trap drums into dramatic orchestral >Funeral Music >Symphonic Villain BGM >Pirates of the Alien Sea Caribbean >Obbo into strings and a beat drop >Descent into Madness with a Midi Kit >The Imperial March But Slightly Less Evil >Underwater Dubstep To Murder Planets To. In that order.
I felt so vindicated hearing you say "and this DOES sound like an Undertale song" about Moonsetter. I always used to confuse it for an Undertale song back in the day.
Oh gosh I never expected this but I'm VERY excited about it. I highly reccomend Heir of Grief, Megalovania (Yes there's a Homestuck one), and The Midnight Crew. ALSO. Hiveswap is a game created by the same folks in the same universe that has an AMAZING OST as well. It's a great game if you ever decide to play :) And this one is less likely butttttt there's a fan comic called Vast Error, lightly inspired by Homestuck and written by entirely different folks, with its own amazing and original soundtrack.
There's also a lot of really amazing fan songs for Homestuck made by talented fans! All of Broadwaystuck with hits like Karkalicious, and the iconic Ugly Story by PhemieC
oooh, to add onto this, temporal shenanigans is also a great one, the emotion and the storytelling of aradia's growth as a character makes me tear up every time
The Homestuck soundtrack is very long and VERY GOOD, I'd recommend listening to Savior of The Waking World and Heir of Grief, those two are very nice tracks, loved this video
"I was under the impression that it was a bit slice-of-life" you kinds right. But only in the fact that Homestuck has a little bit of EVERY GENRE in it
If you liked this, and want more homestuck music, I'd totally suggest checking out the Colors and mayhem albums! I particularly reccomend Gold Pilot and Cobalt Thief, on the universe A album!
The film noir feelings you get from Black are 100% intentional, seeing as the character Black is the theme for is actually named Noir. The character is also heavily associated with those kinds of gritty crime dramas too. (Not to mention the song is literally called Black, what “noir” means in English).
oh man, I love the homestuck ost. These are some pretty weird track choices though imo. Doctor & Beatdown are essential listening - you've actually heard the beatdown motif twice already. it's hard to narrow this OST down but some of my faves are Fuchsia Ruler, Do You Remem8er Me & Unite Synchronisation
"The indie videogame soundtrack equivalent of the stereotypical smooth jazz you hear like detective film noir movies" You literally could not have gotten the context more on the nose. This song is tied to a character that is that description exactly. He's also such an important character that the leitmotif from Black was, at some point, in almost every other song you listened to in this video, so I'm really glad you listened to it. Edit: Here's some recommendations for if you do another Homestuck video: 1) Rex Duodecim Angelus - holy cow please do this one it's so SO interesting. 2) English - it's present in almost as many songs as Black as a leitmotif. I highly recommended it. 3) Pipeorgankind - one of my favorites in the comic. I'm just a sucker for pipe organ. Beautiful song. 4) Eternity Served Cold - saw some other people recommending this, and yeah, you should listen to it. Not even necessarily for a video, just everybody should listen to this at some point in their lives. 5) Open the Door - Technically not from Homestuck, this is from a tie-in game called Hiveswap, but it's short and really worth a listen.
My brother is super into Homestuck so I have second-hand experience of the fandom and comic. It seems really cool from what I've heard about it :) I've also listened to some of the soundtrack and a few fan songs and all of them are really good!
honestly the soundtrack is so full of remixes of other songs and leitmotifs picked from others its wonderful and really ties it all together even if most of them dont correspond to specific scenes
OOOOO Does this mean we could get a 'Let's Read Homestuck' reaction? Or maybe a 'Homestuck Abridged' reaction??? Imma just say, the early parts of the 'Let's Read Homestuck' series are pretty crispy since they are actually pretty old, but it would be a good investment otherwise
12:06 actually spot on for the character. I also love how you're reacting to the heavy action and tension bits without any visuals or context to go with them.
I love the homestuck soundtrack and also liked your reaction to it. If you do another homestuck video I would recommend you listen to „at the price of oblivion“, „eternity served cold“ and „heir of grief“
Oppa Toby Style is one of my favourite songs ever, and to a bit of context it is part 2 of a 4 song long battle sequence that overall lasts about 18 minutes
Homestuck is by far one of my favorite pieces of media. ive read it twice and listened to the audio book styled youtube series. its so fascinating and really keeps your attention really recommend it. i DID NOT expect to see you reacting to the music of it lol if you do a part 2 to this (because there are quite a few awesome tracks in this) i would highly recommend some specific songs. such as: Umbral Ultimatum, Sburban Jungle, and Pumpkin party at sea hitlers water apocalypse (that last one is the most metal name ive ever seen by the way) those are some more highly rated Homestuck songs. Id also HIGHLY recommend the Hiveswap music (which to be fair is very reminsicent of homestuck but actually sticks to a similar theme throughout which might be a little more your style.) such as conducters cabin, How I beat a snake, or even the amazing Jude Harley, Bizarrely lol
I would love to see a full readthrough of Homestuck from you, totally uncut. The comic is a bit problematic and outdated in places but it's well worth it for how much of an amazing and wild ride it is. It's over 8000 pages though. It's weird because "webcomic" doesn't fully encompass it. Most of it is dialogue with pictures, but some of it is mini-movies, some of it is actual games, some of it is animation sequences so long they could be a full episode of a tv show. It has such unique writing and comedic style, you'd be hard pressed to find anything like it that wasn't directly inspired by it, and as a writer, it's the single biggest influence on my writing by far. Getting to watch people read it is always a joy. It starts slow but once you get invested you get INVESTED. Plus you'd get to listen to the music with its proper buildup and context where it hits so much harder.
Not really, you just have to download the unofficial collection, it's arguably even better than just using the website. I just wish they didn't hide the oil and arms by default, that's literally my only complaint.
@@pumpkinpartysystem I get that, but I think hiding the oil was the right move. It fits how it was reading it at the time, and it fits the in story context, which is that John literally reaches back and retcons the entire comic's history. If it didn't hide the oil, it would imply that it was there the whole time, which it was not.
As someone who has read homestuck, somber undertones is basically in all of them. I wouldn't consider Homestuck a happy comic its goofy at times yes, but theme wise its p sad and dark (Edit) Collide is basically, different groups in the comic each basically getting into boss fights and swapping perspectives rapidly. ((Also different characters actually have instruments tied to them, so depending on what characters are around it tends to use or favor their instrument))
oh my gosh im over the moon that you checked out the homestuck soundtrack If you wanna check out any more I recommend the soundtrack from the spin-off game Hiveswap. There is only 2 parts so far but it is super cool
@@raekid4986 The name makes sense in the context. At least I think so. After reading Homestuck your mind is too broken to really be sure what makes sense and what doesn't.
Homestuck started as pure unadulterated user driven shitpost and evolved into a heck of a complex story with probably the cleanest, most stable and consistent time loops I've seen in any media. Also while a lot of pieces are more stand-alonish and simple, many others build on top of each other and are so amazing. Oppa Toby Style is the second half of a greater composition that tells the near conclusion of a whole story, it plays in the second to last chapter of the story in a 16 minute flash animation. Peppered all over the song are tons of leitmotifs that have been part of the story for years, and hearing them back is extremely nostalgic and hard hitting by that time of the journey.
Homestuck's got loads of bangers. Off the top of my head, here are a few I'd recommend. -Umbral Ultimatum -Sburban Jungle -At the Price of Oblivion -Dark Rose/Green Sun -Gold Pilot -Crystamanthequins -Eternity, Served Cold -English (Worth noting is that this is a musical palindrome; if you play it backwards it sounds almost identical!) -Doctor -Green Ghost -Orchid Horror -Heir of Grief -Infinity Mechanism -Unite Synchronization -Descend -Savior of the Waking World -Savior of the Dreaming Dead And tons more, but this list is already long enough.
there's so much reference and leitmotif in homestuck music, seeing you reacting to it makes me go "oh shit he doesn't know what this is referencing and why this is so hype"
I’ve literally been getting into Homestuck this past week so this video could not be timed more perfectly XD Also, you could never guess what Homestuck is about from the title, let me tell you. The vastly shortened summary is 4 kids play a game that ends the world and now they have to win the game to make a new one But then the full plot is so much more complicated and involves so much freaking time travel and multiple universes and lore and trolls and utter chaos- I highly recommend reading it, I’ve been enjoying it immensely so far Act One starts pretty slow, but certainly picks up at the end and Act Two is where stuff starts getting more investing
@@The_True_Mx_Pink If you like long form literature I'd reccomend it, but Homestuck isn't without its bumps in the road and is not for everybody. It does a lot genuinely interesting ideas I've seen nowhere else, as well as having probably one of the coolest and more unique elemental circles.
@@The_True_Mx_Pink The creator of the series is very skilled at what he does but he’s also kind of a massive troll. The series has a big element of internet culture from the early 2000’s that’s woven into the story with how the characters talk to each other and the kind of memes the kids share with each other. If you don’t mind reading long conversations between people you’ll probably enjoy it because the characters feel like people you could actually meet in real life. If you aren’t a fan of that the series will feel like it drags on a lot in the first act especially if you aren’t a fan of coding jokes or random humor.
collide needs to be accompanied by the video for the music to make sense, everything is going insane for real. the music helps put the animation all together
genuinely wasn't expecting this one! your reactions to the variety that homestuck offers in music was pretty funny, and it was interesting hearing your takes on them! i may not be as deep in the fandom as i used to be, but it was a good part of my teenage years so it has a little place in my heart. i got joy out of you listening to moonsetter too, every time i hear that it makes me think of sims music/sims starting screen type music, for some reason, haha. but yeah, it was fun seeing your reactions to the variety! if you decide to do another one of these, i have some suggestions, though that's all they are, suggestions! no need to do any of them if you have ideas already! - Showtime (Original Mix) from Vol 1 - Sburban Jungle from Vol 4 - Savior of the Waking World from Vol 5 - Alternia from the Alterniabound Soundtrack - MeGaLoVania from Vol 6 (yes, there's a homestuck version, and it doesnt sound the exact same as undertales! i enjoy both dearly!) - Unite Synchronization from Vol 8 - Crystalmethequins from Vol 9 - Hate You from Vol 9 - Requited from Vol 9 - Heir of Grief from the Collide Soundtrack (out of all of these, i recommend this one the most if you were to choose just one out of any of them!)
I totally recommend Savior of the Waking World, Iron Infidel, Gold Pilot, and Doctor!!! Homestuck music is literally so fucking good AND THERE'S SO MUCH OF IT!!! It is a multi-media comic that started in April of 2009, and only officially finished in 2016. There's STILL music being produced for it, the latest official album having dropped in I believe 2019 or 2020.
its always so hilarious to hear how on point you are with some of the speculations in your videos, ESPECIALLY this! A lot of the tracks you featured *were* by Toby, you got the vibes nearly on point with the context of the songs, its just so funnily ironic XD
2:24 "Why is it so inspirational? I went from feeling like i should rob a bank to feeling like 'oh i'm the good guy im gonna defend the world from the bad guy's" That is so in character for dave (which this is one of his themes) from homestuck you don't even knooooow
I would recommend listening to Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse because both the title and the cover art of the track will throw anyone for a loop :) The song's a bop as well. My other recommendation is Black Rose Green Sun ! Very spooky atmosphere, its my favorite
I’d love to see you come back to the Homestuck ost, it’s so huge! I’d recommend the classics of Homestuck Sburban Jungle, Unite Synchronization, and my personal favourite Earthsea Borealis.
One final comment: Major animations in the story would have tailor made music that contains the themes for all the characters involved, and the music would transition into that character's theme when they appear in the animation. That's why quite a few of these feel like several different short songs.
I would love to see more reactions to the homestuck soundtrack, there are so many good tracks on that OST, almost too many to properly recommend you anything. I would say some top contenders would be; "Heir of Grief" "Umbral Ultimatum" "Carne Vale" "Eternity Served Cold" "Megalovania" (yes, there is a homestuck version of this soundtrack. it kind of is Toby's personal soundtrack.) "Hate You" "Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse" (yes, it is really named like that, and there is an actual in-universe reason for it.) "Cascade" "Dance of Thorns" "Descend" "Rex Duodecim Angelus" "Revered Return" "Infinity Mechanism" "Even in Death" and "Even in Death (T'Morra's Belly Mix)" and many more...
Yeah, I was surprised not to see some of those in the video. Though I guess it makes sense that he didn't do Cascade, since that would take up nearly the entire runtime.
Eh we probably won't pull him too deep into this one. It ain't a game. Its a webcomic, a long one at that. But yes, please please please tell me he's gonna listen to some more.
this video is so funny bc i feel like im so associate specific leitmotifs and songs from homestuck with the scenes and characters that ive never considered that it might not make sense without the context. And if that isnt homestuck in a nutshell. Would love to see you to react to more homestuck music! Theres so much of it and its so good
I'd definitely love to see more. A few favorites off the top of my head that I'd recommend are; -Eternity Served Cold -The Blind Prophet -She's a Sp8der -Rex Duodecim Angelus -The Lordling -Catchyegrabber (This one actually does have vocals by the way) -Hardchorale
I'd 500% love to see you do a lets read series for homestuck. Your inflections are perfect, and i feel you would nail some of the voices if you chose to do voices. I believe it would be a life changing experience.
My memories of homestuck have all become bittersweet, but one thing I'll always praise is the artistry surrounding its story, and its sheer density. If you have the time, you should absolutely give it a try to see whether it is your jam.
0:12 going from listening to one direction for the first time to listening to the homestuck ost for the first time is somehow the most homestuck thing you could’ve done
Watched several of your music vids and love your channel! If you ever do another one of these videos, might I suggest "Mother" from the One Year Older album by Erik Scheele? (prepare for tears.) And, as someone who has been "Stuck" in this fandom for years and has made her UA-cam channel circle around the INSANITY/Genius that is this webcomic... you'd probably like Homestuck. Imagine the paradox of saving the world while accidentally destroying it, a plot that was essentially randomly generated, and a hilariously played-up author insert who breaks the fourth wall occasionally... and you basically have Homestuck. It got a lot of flack during it's early run because the teen fanbase got a bit obnoxious online and turned everyone off to it (proto-Undertale fans, you feel me?). But it's got charm, a LOT of characters, and, as you can hear, a bang'n OST. Long talk over lol :)
So happy to see someone reacting to the Homestuck ost. Some of my personal favorites that I recommend you check out are - Heir of Grief - Golden pilot - you killed my father(prepare to die) - infinity mechanism - creata(full version) - moonsweater - eternity served cold - English - aggrievocation - solar voyage
I really wish you'd do another Homestuck video! You're pretty much the only one doing it lol... I recommend "Eternity Served Cold", "Umbral Ultimatum" and "Sburban Jungle"!
The context of songs like ‘Time On my Side’ and ‘Oppa Toby Style’ is that a lot of Homestuck’s ‘fight music’ is composed in such a way that it literally pits multiple leitmotifs against each other. It makes for a really cool effect when you listen to it as you watch along with its accompanying story animations!
Something I feel necessary to add in - with how many people worked on the OST, a shorthand for the characters was established quickly with instrument use - Dave is an electronic turntable, Rose is strings, John is piano, etc. The first ost is explicitly linked to Dave, so you hear that sorta sound, and the third one is tied to Rose AND Dave, so you get the strings and the beat. Also loved the comment about Oppa Toby Style feeling like a retro endgame boss theme. No doubt people have mentioned it already but it's supposed to score MULTIPLE endgame boss fights at the same time. It also consists nearly entirely of leitmotifs.
I feel what a lot of songs are influenced by, is what characters are involved in it. The reverse/glitch effect in some of the songs is usually done when someone who has time warping powers is involved. I absolutely adore the homestuck ost and the way songs are so clearly dedicated to specific characters. It's oddly how in FromSoft games the character themes fully embody the characters
holy shit you did hometsuck!!! i SCREAMED in excitement when i saw this upload. the soundtrack is full of pretty much every genre conceivable tbh. i would recommend heir of grief, at the price of oblivion, gold pilot, showtime (piano refrain), the beginning of something really excellent, savior of the dreaming dead, rain, sunslammer, do you remem8er, and sburban jungle.
i am so damn excited to see homestuck appear on your channel like, i binge-watched a ton of your stuff but i had to finally leave a comment to say i hope you do more homestuck music!!!
I was SO surprised seeing this in my recommended, and so excited!! If you do this again I'd love to see you react to the videos that go with these songs, they match very well and it's always fun to see someone experience homestuck without context. Reacting to "[S] Cascade" could be a video in itself, it's 15 minutes and absolutely WILD, great music and visuals
Man, this takes me back. Back to the days of devouring HS content, of binging theory videos, counting the seconds for updates, friendly shipping wars with my friends, creating fan trolls, lusii, Sgrub sessions & planets. The laughs, the tears, the excitement... Thank you Mathew, thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane. BTW if you want to check out some fan songs, PhemieC has some brilliant character-driven ones that are, just oh so lovely. I'd heavily suggest 'Ugly Story' , 'Inherit Nothing' , 'Friend, Leader' & 'Little Clown' they're great.
It’s actually amazing how much these songs successfully communicated the vibe of their respctive parts of the comic to you, even if you didn’t have any of the context required to remotely guess the content.
I would absolutely love to see you continue to delve into the music of homestuck. Some songs you should definitely listen to are indigo heir, spiders8reath, and at the price of oblivion.
i never realized how desensitized id become to how CRAZY homestuck's music is. especially the songs in this video. i love time on my side so much and never actually thought about how random it actually comes off as because it makes perfect sense when youre familiar with homestuck. absolutely insane soundtrack made by so many skilled musicians

Another thing to pay attention to is most characters have a specific instrument associated with them.
The music for it is amazing.
yes please!!
I doubt it would have anywhere near the effect it has having read up to that point (which is half the damn comic) so it would have to be a whole blind reading.
It would be visual gibberish without context 💀
@@tnarwhal I'm all for that 🕺
no thank you, the visuals should be reacted to in context with reading all of the previous comic
a good chunk of the homestuck OST is dependant on recognising leitmotifs to get the most out of it, but when you do know them, MAN it’s satisfying
Nice. Homestuck is something else. Very slow start, then pulls a twist with reality changing elements, strange weapon concepts, and trolls fighting each other and basically the devil.
Edit: Would be interesting to see you react to the fight videos from Homestuck. Sorry, just wanted to say.
-Basically the devil
Ah yes, guy fieri
Homestuck uses leitmotifing to hell and back. Since there's dozens of people that have contributed music, characters, themes, and mechanics get melodies assigned to each other to keep a throughline. Each composer then adds their own spin on the snippet, creating a chain of musical mutation that's fascinating to track. If you do another video like this, keep an ear out for recurring elements!
Homestuck has an absolutely phenomenal and wildly varied soundtrack. I would definitely look forward to you listening to a few more! Some recommendations you may find fun:
- Sburban Jungle
- Ohgodwhat Remix
- Doctor
- Karkat's Theme
- I'm A Member of the Midnight Crew
- Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse
- MeGaLoVania (yeah. You heard me. Capitalization is relevant)
Another funny one from toby fox is "The Lemonsnout Turnabout". that one is super crazy :P
Heir of Grief 🥹
y'know what else i'd like to hear? GAME GRL, that'd be neat
upward movement or how do i live (bunny back in the box version)
@@turking25 Lmaoooo yess also Toby fox's gamebro (gameblorg)
>Context
There are a couple of different leitmotifs at work in Time On My Side that are representing confrontations between their respective affiliated characters. The reason why it shifts from Anxious to Conflict to Heroic to Villain in feel is that it's each character respectively getting the upper hand.
EDIT:
"Next one is...Oppa Toby Style?"
Poor man tripped into the final boss fight without knowing what he was getting into goddamn.
>Dramatic Orchestral
>Spanish Guitar Western
>Soft Electronica
>Historical Gregorian Chants
>Flute/Piano mix with trap drums into dramatic orchestral
>Funeral Music
>Symphonic Villain BGM
>Pirates of the Alien Sea Caribbean
>Obbo into strings and a beat drop
>Descent into Madness with a Midi Kit
>The Imperial March But Slightly Less Evil
>Underwater Dubstep To Murder Planets To.
In that order.
C&M is my favourite album. I would love to watch a reaction to it.
I felt so vindicated hearing you say "and this DOES sound like an Undertale song" about Moonsetter. I always used to confuse it for an Undertale song back in the day.
snowdin theme vibes
@@pearlplayaa fr
Oh gosh I never expected this but I'm VERY excited about it. I highly reccomend Heir of Grief, Megalovania (Yes there's a Homestuck one), and The Midnight Crew. ALSO. Hiveswap is a game created by the same folks in the same universe that has an AMAZING OST as well. It's a great game if you ever decide to play :)
And this one is less likely butttttt there's a fan comic called Vast Error, lightly inspired by Homestuck and written by entirely different folks, with its own amazing and original soundtrack.
There's also a lot of really amazing fan songs for Homestuck made by talented fans! All of Broadwaystuck with hits like Karkalicious, and the iconic Ugly Story by PhemieC
Heir of grief is a personal favorite of mine
Homestuck one came before Undertale, which I think is awesome
Heir of Grief is my favorite!! It'd be such a good song to react to
oooh, to add onto this, temporal shenanigans is also a great one, the emotion and the storytelling of aradia's growth as a character makes me tear up every time
The Homestuck soundtrack is very long and VERY GOOD, I'd recommend listening to Savior of The Waking World and Heir of Grief, those two are very nice tracks, loved this video
YES! heir of grief is one of the best songs!!!!!!
aw heck yeah, heir of grief is great!!
Savior of the Waking World is my favorite track, it literally makes me cry every time
Heir of grief absolutely one hundred percent
"I was under the impression that it was a bit slice-of-life" you kinds right. But only in the fact that Homestuck has a little bit of EVERY GENRE in it
If you liked this, and want more homestuck music, I'd totally suggest checking out the Colors and mayhem albums! I particularly reccomend Gold Pilot and Cobalt Thief, on the universe A album!
oh yes, those two are my favorites off of that album!
gold pilot
I love Cobalt Thief!
literally the best songs on that album :0!
He should listen to fuchsia ruler for 30 minutes straight. Really get that homestuck experience.
The film noir feelings you get from Black are 100% intentional, seeing as the character Black is the theme for is actually named Noir. The character is also heavily associated with those kinds of gritty crime dramas too.
(Not to mention the song is literally called Black, what “noir” means in English).
OH MY GOD THIS IS HAPPENING. homestuck music is greatly underrated just because comic is big and quite weird
DAVE STRIDER PFP
Homestuck is truly great; it's got good artwork and a decent story, but the music is downright amazing and is what makes it
9:13 “WHAT THE HELL IS THE CONTEXT OF THIS” 4 teenagers are fighting a fish alien queen who was the ruler of a planet who is also Betty Crocker
oh man, I love the homestuck ost. These are some pretty weird track choices though imo.
Doctor & Beatdown are essential listening - you've actually heard the beatdown motif twice already.
it's hard to narrow this OST down but some of my faves are Fuchsia Ruler, Do You Remem8er Me & Unite Synchronisation
yes that title has an 8 instead of a B, it makes sense in context
"The indie videogame soundtrack equivalent of the stereotypical smooth jazz you hear like detective film noir movies" You literally could not have gotten the context more on the nose. This song is tied to a character that is that description exactly. He's also such an important character that the leitmotif from Black was, at some point, in almost every other song you listened to in this video, so I'm really glad you listened to it.
Edit: Here's some recommendations for if you do another Homestuck video:
1) Rex Duodecim Angelus - holy cow please do this one it's so SO interesting.
Based off the videos you did for Undertale, all I'm gonna say is that there's enough Homestuck content to feed this channel for literal years lol
Is it safe to say he's sealed his fate?
OOOOO Does this mean we could get a 'Let's Read Homestuck' reaction? Or maybe a 'Homestuck Abridged' reaction??? Imma just say, the early parts of the 'Let's Read Homestuck' series are pretty crispy since they are actually pretty old, but it would be a good investment otherwise
or a Let's Read Homestuck by mathew.
I don’t think he deserves that cruelty
@@technobeagle9598 agreed lmao
As much as I'd love that and watch that, I don't think Mathew deserves to go through that unless he inflicts that upon himself.
Maybe he could watch the flashes atleast; I know I've seen a few compilations of them all on UA-cam
Oh, and „terezi owns“
@@Chimera-like_Creature terezi owns is such an underrated bop
Oppa Toby Style is one of my favourite songs ever, and to a bit of context it is part 2 of a 4 song long battle sequence that overall lasts about 18 minutes
Homestuck is by far one of my favorite pieces of media. ive read it twice and listened to the audio book styled youtube series. its so fascinating and really keeps your attention really recommend it. i DID NOT expect to see you reacting to the music of it lol
if you do a part 2 to this (because there are quite a few awesome tracks in this) i would highly recommend some specific songs. such as: Umbral Ultimatum, Sburban Jungle, and Pumpkin party at sea hitlers water apocalypse (that last one is the most metal name ive ever seen by the way)
those are some more highly rated Homestuck songs.
Id also HIGHLY recommend the Hiveswap music (which to be fair is very reminsicent of homestuck but actually sticks to a similar theme throughout which might be a little more your style.)
such as conducters cabin, How I beat a snake, or even the amazing Jude Harley, Bizarrely lol
Sburban Jungle is like my favourite song not tied to fight or a villain. It's super good.
Unfortunately, with the death of Flash, the experience is gutted somewhat.
Not really, you just have to download the unofficial collection, it's arguably even better than just using the website. I just wish they didn't hide the oil and arms by default, that's literally my only complaint.
@@pumpkinpartysystem The unofficial collection is a fucking godsend
@@pumpkinpartysystem I get that, but I think hiding the oil was the right move. It fits how it was reading it at the time, and it fits the in story context, which is that John literally reaches back and retcons the entire comic's history. If it didn't hide the oil, it would imply that it was there the whole time, which it was not.
Fair enough
As someone who has read homestuck, somber undertones is basically in all of them. I wouldn't consider Homestuck a happy comic its goofy at times yes, but theme wise its p sad and dark
(Edit)
Collide is basically, different groups in the comic each basically getting into boss fights and swapping perspectives rapidly.
((Also different characters actually have instruments tied to them, so depending on what characters are around it tends to use or favor their instrument))
Homestuck is like a tragedy pretending to be a goofy and epic adventure, nobody came unharmed through the end, every single kid died at least one time
oh my gosh im over the moon that you checked out the homestuck soundtrack
If you wanna check out any more I recommend the soundtrack from the spin-off game Hiveswap. There is only 2 parts so far but it is super cool
thers is also two visual novel that have amazing soundtrack ! recommend the games also
Pesterquest has some really good tracks too!
Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitlers Water Apocalypse is my favorite from the Homestuck soundtrack. But the fan songs from Phemic C are so nice.
Just gotta say, the name alone for that song is tripping as hell and I am HERE for it.
-Umbral Ultimatum
-Sburban Jungle
-At the Price of Oblivion
-Dark Rose/Green Sun
-Gold Pilot
-Crystamanthequins
-Eternity, Served Cold
-English (Worth noting is that this is a musical palindrome; if you play it backwards it sounds almost identical!)
-Doctor
-Green Ghost
-Orchid Horror
-Heir of Grief
-Infinity Mechanism
-Unite Synchronization
-Descend
-Savior of the Waking World
-Savior of the Dreaming Dead
And tons more, but this list is already long enough.
there's so much reference and leitmotif in homestuck music, seeing you reacting to it makes me go "oh shit he doesn't know what this is referencing and why this is so hype"
I’ve literally been getting into Homestuck this past week so this video could not be timed more perfectly XD
Also, you could never guess what Homestuck is about from the title, let me tell you.
The vastly shortened summary is 4 kids play a game that ends the world and now they have to win the game to make a new one
But then the full plot is so much more complicated and involves so much freaking time travel and multiple universes and lore and trolls and utter chaos-
I highly recommend reading it, I’ve been enjoying it immensely so far
Act One starts pretty slow, but certainly picks up at the end and Act Two is where stuff starts getting more investing
But would you recommend it?
@@moonlitwyvern6840 New ideas to steal, big bonus.
@@spookycircuits455 Then I will probably enjoy it. Thanks.
collide needs to be accompanied by the video for the music to make sense, everything is going insane for real. the music helps put the animation all together
genuinely wasn't expecting this one! your reactions to the variety that homestuck offers in music was pretty funny, and it was interesting hearing your takes on them! i may not be as deep in the fandom as i used to be, but it was a good part of my teenage years so it has a little place in my heart. i got joy out of you listening to moonsetter too, every time i hear that it makes me think of sims music/sims starting screen type music, for some reason, haha. but yeah, it was fun seeing your reactions to the variety!
if you decide to do another one of these, i have some suggestions, though that's all they are, suggestions! no need to do any of them if you have ideas already!
- Showtime (Original Mix) from Vol 1
- Sburban Jungle from Vol 4
- Savior of the Waking World from Vol 5
- Alternia from the Alterniabound Soundtrack
- MeGaLoVania from Vol 6 (yes, there's a homestuck version, and it doesnt sound the exact same as undertales! i enjoy both dearly!)
- Unite Synchronization from Vol 8
- Crystalmethequins from Vol 9
- Hate You from Vol 9
- Requited from Vol 9
- Heir of Grief from the Collide Soundtrack (out of all of these, i recommend this one the most if you were to choose just one out of any of them!)
Omg those are great tracks
haha found u
great picks :>
I’d love to see you come back to the Homestuck ost, it’s so huge! I’d recommend the classics of Homestuck Sburban Jungle, Unite Synchronization, and my personal favourite Earthsea Borealis.
One final comment:
Major animations in the story would have tailor made music that contains the themes for all the characters involved, and the music would transition into that character's theme when they appear in the animation.
That's why quite a few of these feel like several different short songs.
I would love to see more reactions to the homestuck soundtrack, there are so many good tracks on that OST, almost too many to properly recommend you anything. I would say some top contenders would be;
"Heir of Grief"
"Umbral Ultimatum"
"Carne Vale"
"Eternity Served Cold"
"Megalovania" (yes, there is a homestuck version of this soundtrack. it kind of is Toby's personal soundtrack.)
"Hate You"
"Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse" (yes, it is really named like that, and there is an actual in-universe reason for it.)
"Cascade"
"Dance of Thorns"
"Descend"
"Rex Duodecim Angelus"
"Revered Return"
"Infinity Mechanism"
"Even in Death" and "Even in Death (T'Morra's Belly Mix)"
and many more...
Yeah, I was surprised not to see some of those in the video. Though I guess it makes sense that he didn't do Cascade, since that would take up nearly the entire runtime.
Ladies, gentleman and dragons, we did it.
We got Mathew in another rabbit hole, the deepest yet I believe.
Eh we probably won't pull him too deep into this one. It ain't a game. Its a webcomic, a long one at that. But yes, please please please tell me he's gonna listen to some more.
This is the closest I will ever get to my dream of watching people react to homestuck flashes with no context.
REAL
Exactly this. PLEASE
this video is so funny bc i feel like im so associate specific leitmotifs and songs from homestuck with the scenes and characters that ive never considered that it might not make sense without the context. And if that isnt homestuck in a nutshell. Would love to see you to react to more homestuck music! Theres so much of it and its so good
I'd definitely love to see more. A few favorites off the top of my head that I'd recommend are;
-Eternity Served Cold
-The Blind Prophet
-She's a Sp8der
-Rex Duodecim Angelus
-The Lordling
-Catchyegrabber (This one actually does have vocals by the way)
-Hardchorale
(prepare for tears.)
And, as someone who has been "Stuck" in this fandom for years and has made her UA-cam channel circle around the INSANITY/Genius that is this webcomic... you'd probably like Homestuck.
Hey wait a minute.
So happy to see someone reacting to the Homestuck ost. Some of my personal favorites that I recommend you check out are
- Heir of Grief
- Golden pilot
- you killed my father(prepare to die)
- infinity mechanism
- creata(full version)
- moonsweater
- eternity served cold
- English
- aggrievocation
- solar voyage
ure so right in saying 'you killed my father (prepare to die)" its great
and heir of grief and creata... theyre so great
don't forget rhapsody in green and sunshaker
I really wish you'd do another Homestuck video! You're pretty much the only one doing it lol...
I recommend "Eternity Served Cold", "Umbral Ultimatum" and "Sburban Jungle"!
PLEASE listen to Heir of Grief, and Unite Synchronization. They're my favorite tracks and I would love to see you react to them!
It's important to remember many of homestuck's songs were made specifically to fit with flash animation segments.
moonsetter is the background for like the only genuinely happy moment in thousands of pages and it made me cry
also oppa toby style is actually very literally the big final boss fight music
I feel what a lot of songs are influenced by, is what characters are involved in it. The reverse/glitch effect in some of the songs is usually done when someone who has time warping powers is involved. I absolutely adore the homestuck ost and the way songs are so clearly dedicated to specific characters. It's oddly how in FromSoft games the character themes fully embody the characters
I was so excited when I saw this thumbnail and I was not dissappinted! :D
Ohhh I am BEGGING for a part 2 of this!!!
You asking about the context of the pieces is. Really fitting. Really
It's complicated
holy shit you did hometsuck!!! i SCREAMED in excitement when i saw this upload. the soundtrack is full of pretty much every genre conceivable tbh. i would recommend heir of grief, at the price of oblivion, gold pilot, showtime (piano refrain), the beginning of something really excellent, savior of the dreaming dead, rain, sunslammer, do you remem8er, and sburban jungle.
i am so damn excited to see homestuck appear on your channel like, i binge-watched a ton of your stuff but i had to finally leave a comment to say i hope you do more homestuck music!!!
PLEASE MORE HOMESTUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this made me so happy to see someone analyze these songs out of context...so interesting!!
Watching "[S] wake" would also be great, for a certain Toby Fox song you may recognize = )
I'd heavily suggest 'Ugly Story' , 'Inherit Nothing' , 'Friend, Leader' & 'Little Clown' they're great.
i never thought this would happen lets fucking GO
It’s actually amazing how much these songs successfully communicated the vibe of their respctive parts of the comic to you, even if you didn’t have any of the context required to remotely guess the content.
I would absolutely love to see you continue to delve into the music of homestuck. Some songs you should definitely listen to are indigo heir, spiders8reath, and at the price of oblivion.
I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Showtime. It’s the first song in the whole shebang, and it helps establish leitmotifs…
i never realized how desensitized id become to how CRAZY homestuck's music is. especially the songs in this video. i love time on my side so much and never actually thought about how random it actually comes off as because it makes perfect sense when youre familiar with homestuck. absolutely insane soundtrack made by so many skilled musicians
