I watched you before and lost the video because I did not sub, I will not make that mistake again! I'm and new sub and have you saved t every list UA-cam will let me have for yarn. It has taken me hours to find you. Then I remembered after watching videos on Red Heart Granny Square yarn that you popped up in the suggested cue and viola I found you and that blue plaid square you made from yarn using this method.
I actually colorpooled with Bundle of Love in my most recent pooling video that teaches how to do it in the round. I took had some inconsistencies but with a little adjusting it came out really nice. Here is a link to the video ua-cam.com/video/BsWazK-Hylg/v-deo.htmlsi=c7Vp9KsiWWXdDRaX
Yes, you can actually color pool in all of the basic stitches, but some show it off better than others. I am currently working on a long color change color way (red heart granny square yarn) using a shell stitch because it eats up so much yarn and makes those long color changes more manageable. I have a video that shows how to use the mini granny stitch to pool. One e you understand that concept it's easy to apply it to other stitches. Here is the link. ua-cam.com/video/9--hW07AEVE/v-deo.htmlsi=dg8wOife86udTcTr
It depends on the stitch. If you are pooling with moss stitch or single crochet then no. With double crochet then the chain 2 before you start the row might count as a stitch or it might not. Just be consistent. If you are doing a fancier stitch then it completely depends on the stitch.
So "ombre" is in the eye of the beholder. Different makers call different things ombre so it's kind of hard to say. I believe the yarn called Blueberry Hill that I used to make the sample swatch in this video is considered an ombre. Personally I think the only difference is that the colors fade together instead of having distinct color breaks but by that definition almost all variegated yarn is ombre. As far as the shapes go, I like that to be a surprise. However there is a website called plannedpooling.com that allows you to plan your shapes ahead based on what stitch you use and how many stitches per color you do. It's fun to play with.
It looks like the plaid version is done using the same technique as the arguile but using Bernat Blanket yarn which has less colors, at least that's what Google is showing me
Ha! That's what the industry is calling "pooling" right? I have almost died making simple tartans with crochet and knit😬- then this "pooling" found me. Now it's a matter of finding yarn with "color way" that "pools" the tartan you want. "Pooling" does, however make the pattern a diagonal layout by design.
I have never heard the term unpick, is that the same as frogging or undoing the stitches? Honestly it has never been an issue. Sometimes I feel like people overthink this technique because it seems super technical. They count how many stitches you get from each color, they think hook size makes all the difference and they map it out ahead of time....I don't do any of those things. I just go off of where the color changes land. It has never steered me wrong. And if you want to get into changing the pattern, you can do that by adjusting your tension. I did a video for two twisted cowls. One had the argyle pattern and one was in a zig zag pattern and I show how to adjust your tension to do that. Here's the link if you want to see it. ua-cam.com/video/BsWazK-Hylg/v-deo.htmlsi=innFlolcIqAvsLr4
If you use a yarn that pools and you adjust your tension then yes. But you can also do it with single crochet and granny stitch. The granny stitch is used for long color changes and SC for short ones. Although I am working on a short change yarn using moss stitch and its working
I think they changed that yarn slightly or I got a weird batch. I bought the exact same one and I think the color pattern was changed. I could not for the life of me make it work. I was trying to the exact color pattern as you and it just would not match. I bought a yarn that specifically says it was for color pooling and was able to make it work easily so I know the concept.
I have been working on learning p-p for two days now, and have tried a number of different videos. I simply can't get it. Maybe it is the wrong yarn I am using, but it was on a list somewhere of yarn that would pool. I am about to give up. I so far have only seen remarks about people wanting to do this, no one who has. It is very hard. Hope I can figure it out. Not this time, though.
Sally come join my Facebook group. There are a number of people who have been very successful who could maybe help including myself. You can share which yarn you are using and maybe I or someone else can walk you through it. The group is called Ginell's Quarantine Crochet
Yes it is a size I hook. I typically use the recommended hook size for whatever yarn I am using. Unless I am making baskety stuff (smaller size) or I am trying to get a drape out of the fabric (larger size). I believe both the Red Heart and the Yarn Bee call for a I hook or 5.5 mm.
Thank you for posting this video. lt never occurred to me that I could crochet to the middle of the color, as you did with the white, then begin your count from there. Another approach to planned pooling. Bless you.
I have never been able to figure that out. I think it is a discontinued red heart color. The closest I have been able to find is Red Heart Mexicana. Actually I think the Mexicana is prettier because it has purple in it. There is a link to it and many other poolable yarn colors on my blog www.ginellscrochettherapy.com/post/color-pooling-can-i-pool-with-this-yarn-here-s-how-to-know#viewer-ckee1
Haha ..I know it seems that way but it's just a slight adjustment to the tension so that the colors stack directly on top of each other instead of being offset by one space. It's fun to play with.
You basically make a long chain and the moss stitch (sc, ch, sc, ch) for a row or two so you can reliably count how many stitches each color makes. It’s best to write it down if you’re unsure. Then, when working the actual project, you have to pay attention to each color having the EXACT number of stitches you wrote down. So you have to make stitches tighter if the color runs a bit short, or looser if it runs a bit too long. After about 10 rows of this it should start to get easier.
I have been creating planned pooling plarn. One bag loop is close to a single granny stitch cluster. In plarn, because you can't really vary tension, it's easier to sneak a single crochet in place of the doubles as needed to keep the transitions in the right place.
I have three other videos about planned pooling so if this one isn't working for you, you could maybe try one of those. I recommend " Can You Color Pool With This Yarn? " here's a direct link to it. ua-cam.com/video/3V8Gw5wgJkQ/v-deo.htmlsi=vvamHUxe2m4gaUNr
Well in my experience, you won't know exactly how long of a chain you will need until you do the row after the chain. But if you are so good that you can calculate it exactly, then definitely do that. I, however, am not that good. 😁
I feel like there are lots of other videos for that out there and I am trying to teach how to color pool with any yarn which is what I expand on in the Can You Pool With It video. I do appreciate your input though. Everyone learns differently.

It depends on the stitch. If you are pooling with moss stitch or single crochet then no. With double crochet then the chain 2 before you start the row might count as a stitch or it might not. Just be consistent. If you are doing a fancier stitch then it completely depends on the stitch.
Is ombre yarn poolable? What shape do the diamonds take?
So "ombre" is in the eye of the beholder. Different makers call different things ombre so it's kind of hard to say. I believe the yarn called Blueberry Hill that I used to make the sample swatch in this video is considered an ombre. Personally I think the only difference is that the colors fade together instead of having distinct color breaks but by that definition almost all variegated yarn is ombre. As far as the shapes go, I like that to be a surprise. However there is a website called plannedpooling.com that allows you to plan your shapes ahead based on what stitch you use and how many stitches per color you do. It's fun to play with.
Do you teach how to pool plaid patterns?
I haven't done that yet but I'm sure the minute I do, I will teach it. I could look into it.
When I unpick, the yarn stretches. How do you deal with that when the length is so critical?

Unpicking is pulling the stitches out of you've made a mistake. (I make lots of those!) Whenever I do, the yarn always stretches.
Does moss stitch always make an argyle pattern?
If you use a yarn that pools and you adjust your tension then yes. But you can also do it with single crochet and granny stitch. The granny stitch is used for long color changes and SC for short ones. Although I am working on a short change yarn using moss stitch and its working
I think they changed that yarn slightly or I got a weird batch. I bought the exact same one and I think the color pattern was changed. I could not for the life of me make it work. I was trying to the exact color pattern as you and it just would not match. I bought a yarn that specifically says it was for color pooling and was able to make it work easily so I know the concept.
Once you get used to the technique, you will be able to color pool with even the more difficult ones. Keep going, it will click. ❤️
@@GinellCooper You are right! After working with the yarn specifically made for pooling, I attemtped this again and it is starting to work!
Thank you for your kind reply. I am not a
Facebook user. I'm maybe just too old to figure it out 🤔@@GinellCooper
What size hook are you using? Is it a Boye I/5.25 mm hook? Thank you.
Bless you.
@@biomedlib I am so glad you like it ♥
anybody know what yarn the rainbow one at 1:23 is?
I have never been able to figure that out. I think it is a discontinued red heart color. The closest I have been able to find is Red Heart Mexicana. Actually I think the Mexicana is prettier because it has purple in it. There is a link to it and many other poolable yarn colors on my blog

Can you planned pooling in Tunisian?
I haven't tried it but I dont think so because of the return pass. Would love to find out though.
Argyle to strip!!!! How would it be done without sorcery?!?!!!!
You were 'hooked'? Ha!
😁

I have been creating planned pooling plarn. One bag loop is close to a single granny stitch cluster. In plarn, because you can't really vary tension, it's easier to sneak a single crochet in place of the doubles as needed to keep the transitions in the right place.
Plarn is plastic yarn right? I would love to see a picture of that
I wish you'd last it flat between rows so we can actually see how it looks. It's really hard
I have three other videos about planned pooling so if this one isn't working for you, you could maybe try one of those. I recommend " Can You Color Pool With This Yarn? " here's a direct link to it.

You know, you could just your starting knot farther up instead of chaining stitches you won't use
Well in my experience, you won't know exactly how long of a chain you will need until you do the row after the chain. But if you are so good that you can calculate it exactly, then definitely do that. I, however, am not that good. 😁
It would be easier to understand if you stayed with one yarn and didn’t talk about all the variations and your many experiences with other yarns.
I feel like there are lots of other videos for that out there and I am trying to teach how to color pool with any yarn which is what I expand on in the Can You Pool With It video. I do appreciate your input though. Everyone learns differently.
this is explained way to complicated.
Sorry it didn't work for you
