  • The Magee Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Christopher Haas, performs El Relicario by Jose Padilla (arranged by Robert Longfield, not Alfred Reed) in the Magee Theatre on March 10, 2013. This performance was part of our Adios Vancouver concert before our 11-day tour of Spain. The Spanish-born composer Jose Padilla (1889-1960 is best known for his songs, especially those written for the production of Zarzuelas, the Spanish marriage of comic opera and musical theater. One of his most popular Zarzuela pieces was El Relicario. A reliquary (relicario in Spanish) is a container for a holy relic; they are sometimes worn around the neck in the form of a Scapular. Bullfighters traditionally wear one and kiss it just before entering the stadium. Padilla's song describes the love of a famous bullfighter for a "dark-haired maiden". As he throws down his cape for her to step on as she leaves her carriage, he declares that he "will tear off a piece of his cape to make a reliquary, upon which tread so beautiful a foot". The song ends with the bullfighter mortally wounded in the stadium, the girl looking on, as he raises his reliquary to her as a final gesture of his love.
