So glad to hear a positive review of this (so far, this is the only review I've seen, though I saw a headline suggesting another reviewer was less enthused) - I've been sold on the film since I first saw a trailer only because I hadn't heard anything about it before then. Dev Patel's a great actor and seeing him do something like this really intrigued me (in a way, I was a bit disappointed he didn't get more action in Green Knight, but it wasn't that kind of movie), even moreso when I found out he was directing (you know, slightly later in the trailer). The political part was hinted at in the trailer, but sounds even better now, thought it was just going to be "he happens to have a connection to a single well-connected mob guy" situation. Definitely going to see this at some point, maybe even in theatres if it's showing locally (which is still not the most local).

So I saw an early screening for Monkey Man and I know the grifter channels will lose their shit over it. This might weirdly be 2024's most pro-trans rights film so far, along with a kickass action film. You'll understand when you watch it.
Wow, really? Still, you may be overestimating the grifter channels here. They only take on the biggest targets to keep their traffic going. Unless this blows up to John Wick proportions, they'll likely ignore it.
@@johnathonhaney8291 Well to be fair, even John Wick didn't blow up to John Wick proportions the first time. It took at least a year for everyone to begin using Wick as a guide for their own choreography.
Not my circus not my.... but the sense I get from informed friends is that it would actually be a really big deal to have Hanuman, a key divinity from nationalism's favorite Hindu hagiography, being reclaimed in a specifically anti-nationalist context - the big asterisk that hangs over the otherwise-legitimately-fantastic RRR
Bit disappointed with the Wick Comparisons after having seen it. Only the climax is John Wick-esque. And by that I mean the action scenes don't have a million cuts to them and instead let's the audience watch fast fluid action scenes.
I think specifically because of that final scene that people are going to forever remember this movie as “Indian John Wick” for better or worse even if it barely feels like a traditional action movie before that final act
@@samanthagray1103 I mean, you could open a new run of Batman films with Robin already in play, or you could save him for round two. Both are reasonable choices.

Watched this tonight and can't agree with Bob's assessment. It's certainly not a commercial film and, as such, won't be making John Wick type money, outside of India. From the point of the hero awakening, the fight scenes are good and well done, but the earlier fight scenes follow that trope of extreme close ups so you can't tell what is happening, only the reactions to offscreen hits. The tone and style of the film shifts every ten minutes too, which I found very distracting and off putting. It has the feel of a first directorial debut where every trick learned is thrown on screen to show what he can do, which is a lot, without the discernment needed to create a style through the whole flick. The storyline also makes a fair few logical leaps, repetitions to drive an emotional point home without providing the context until late into the story and follows some well worn paths rather than find it's own way. Having said all that, Dev is a capable action hero, the storyline, when it's cohesive, makes some strong points and tugs at all the right heartstrings and the final show downs are very worthy of a good action movie. Slightly disjointed in tone, there is a lot of talent onscreen. Hope his next movie does better and he finds his feet in terms of a personal style.
