Wranglerstar: spends five minutes talking about why the name fastball makes no sense
*Procedes to talk for five minutes about the ball bearing and how fast they are
"it opens FASTer than any unassisted knife...primarily because of those BALL bearings" FAST opening BALL bearings
You totally read my mind! I just did not know how to bring it into comment form. You killed it with this comment.
Read my mind too! Just add "fun" to make it more dumb. LOL!
Did he say that it made no sense though? I think he mostly said that it was a terrible name... which it is. :P
You can rant all you want. I've seen adverts that go a lot crazier to get their product name, brand, and quality out there. Here we have a comprehensive history of the brand and guess what? You're not going to forget the name of the knife, how it works and what it costs. At $100, I believe Gerber couldn't have made a better advertising investment.
Opens fast + ball-bearings = Fastball
Exactly
yep!
Doesn't necessarily make it a good name for a knife.
Still a stupid name
Too much bread Fred. 🔪🔪🇺🇸🤙
Did Wranglerstar Just Make Another Horrible Title?
Rofl yet he hates the title or name of the fastball... which is obviously named for the ball bearings roflmao
@@bumstudios8817 Or because their multi-tool is called The Curve???
Yes
As usual.
@@bumstudios8817 lol that's what I thought. Fastball is terrible...this is the FASTest non-assisted knife I've ever seen, and it's because of those BALL bearings. I audibly laughed lol
I've been wanting a Fastball since I watched this video 2 years ago. I was finally able to purchase one about 2 weeks ago. I couldn't be happier with the knife. It is by far the best knife I've ever had. My dad carried a Mark 1 boot knife when he was a Deputy Sheriff back in the 80's so the Gerber name runs deep in my family as well.
I think It's great that you let your son run the equipment. When I was about 10 my dad made me dig a trench about a mile long on the ranch with an old army backhoe.
It doesn't get better than that! Dug plenty of holes with the shovel. When they let me use the backhoe that was the day! Still remember that day!
Teach them how to do it all manually... then show them the Assistance of the machinery, if they mess up don't treat it right back to digging manual holes.
That kind of work builds character, shouldn't be ashamed of that.
lan Regnier I was 12 before my dad let me handle heavy equipment. I felt so much like an adult.
Tony Ascaso I would have given my left but for a shovel. I had to dig with a potato... in the snow.. uphill both ways!
“It opens so FAST... those BALL bearings are great... why do they call it fastball?
lynn crews I scrolled down to the comments to make this exact comment. Nice to see someone else thinking alike 😁👍
It's still a bad name. I would regret owning a knife with that name....

That gun destroying stunt destroyed their reputation.
@@SamA-jl7uc do people still think Benchmade destroyed salvageable guns? They were destined to be destroyed anyways. It was a pr stunt to help police not to advocate against guns

I looked up more info on the matter and along with destroying guns for the police, Benchmade donated large amounts of money to anti-gun causes.
So there's that. Pretty dumb move

What I'm hearing is that its time for a manufacturer to let you design a knife. I think it would be awesome to have a wranglerstar line of edc knives. I would buy one! Ive been carrying a kershaw leek for years and it serves me well. It has the pointy tip like this (lets not say the lame name) knife.
The leek is a great knife,
that would make for quite a series! the wrangler or wranglerstar being a much better name also ;)
Wharrencliff is not a lame name imo!
that rainbow leek makes me cringe hahahaa
I'd buy a wranglestar knife any day of the week. Considering purchasing the benchmade940. Looks as though itd be tough, very nice looking knife.

A knife with an attached flashlight is illegal in 8 states.
gang members and thugs don't follow state laws and will always be able to get one.
No way??
Seeing my comment 2 years later...
I can't remember if I was joking. 🤔
Growing up In Colorado, my uncles and grandfather always Carried buck knives, that was the gold standard for me.
I carried a Buck for years, absolutely loved that knife and then i inevitably lost it, i still think about it today😂
Gerbers liners are TOO thin and often go 100% lockup and have issues. while this is a good design, that lockbar is the problem. so i avoid them. plus the heat treatment has not been proven yet (after sharpening the burnt edges away a few times).
You probably won't read this but after seeing this, I have a few knives that you'd really enjoy.
Kershaw Leek
CRKT LCK
Civivi Praxis
Kershaw Deadline
If you ever have a chance to check those out, I think you'll like them.
I like the look of that CRKT and the Leek looks pretty slick too but I'd have to get them in my hands
Looks nice although I really love my kershaw leek which is only ~$30. But when I get my next edc knife when Im tired of the leek, Ill look into this. Especially since Im not gonna go with benchmade after their heresy of chopping up guns. I dont care where the guns came from, thats bad juju.

Cody stop making me want stuff I don't need. A salesman in another life. "Will this axe dull? Which knife is sharpest? Call now."
Looks like Gerber took some ideas from the Kershaw leek, Which by the way is the smoothest fastest assisted opening knife i have ever come across
I thought the same. A bigger leek would go over well.
The Leek needs a locking mechanism because its spring assisted opening, which makes it far slower going from pocket to cutting. I like the fastball better... better steel, bigger, and it doesn't have a lock that you've gotta use 2 hands to release. It also costs more than twice as much, ($40 vs $98).
neogod 1 or just don’t be a dumbass and take the lock out because, let’s be real it’s not going to fire in your pocket.
@@noahs.9339 it will though. Forgetting it one time will show you that. I've got the pants to prove it.
That's exactly what they did except with better blade steel
Nice review! It’s always good to hear the opinions of someone who has actually carried and used the knife for a while. I checked out the Fastball recently, and the only thing that hat kept me from buying one, was the liner lock. A frame lock would have made the knife thinner, while providing a strong, secure lockup.
“... It opens FAST ...”
“.... It works FAST because of the BALL bearings... “
Fast ball, for the FAST opening due to BALL bearings?
I can see how they came up with that name.
I like the tounge in cheek, in saying they should ask you when naming their products. 😊
Yea I get the idea behind the name but it's still terrible,
Wranglerstar 😂 love the sense of humor!
Good content as always, would be fun to see some videoing of jack and the tractor vs the stump.
“I have no idea where I put that Bugout knife…maybe in an emergency kit somewhere”😂 Again with the unintentional endorsement!
I watched the whole video with a huge smile on my face because I know how much you like the Benchmade... The struggle is real! :D
Jack is a fine young man, you and Misses W have done a fine job.
I do like the look of that knife. I personally carry a Kershaw dividend in s35vn. It's pretty nice and also USA made. The dividend looks alot like that and has assisted open on it.
I like the dividend much better for sure. Looks better too.
Great video! I was so excited to hear gerber might actually be back. I just ordered one and the tension that holds the blade shut is so tight you literally can’t open it with one hand. I’d suggest waiting till the smooth out the kinks because I’d expect a 100 dollar knife to be perfect and I don’t even think this is repairable. Quite frustrating.
everything you described liking in both knives describes every ZT knife ever made
Thats what i was saying this whole video😂
Depends on the ZT. The Fastball is $99 and ZT's can go for more than the 940 and/or Fastball combined.
You would have to pry my benchmade out of my cold dead hands
As always a good video! I like reviews! More like this :)
Glad to have you here as a member Emil,
I have carried a Kershaw Blur for the past 6 years. Own about 20 other pocket knives, only carry one. Has never let me down.
Great video ! I've carried a Kershaw Leek for ... the past 3 years or so, and it seems to have similar features than this one. USA made, which for me, has always carried the ideal of "Quality" and "Made to outlast you". My Kershaw, and those knives you've presented all have this to them. Thanks for the vids Cody, keep it up. Cheers from Belgium.
"Gerber Wranglestar", that sounds better.
Kershaw has had some of the best and easiest EDC knives I've bought for affordable pricing. If you like that Gerber you should try them.
*KERSHAW LINK 20CV* one incredible blade
The bottom draw strings on my rain jacket get caught on pocket clips. I've looked down and seen it hanging there.
Good review. I was considering this for a while and wasn't impressed with reviews that called out quality inconsistency issues. Seemed like some people got centered blades with somewhat even sharpening and others were all out of whack. I ended up going with a Spyderco Shaman. Apples to oranges I know, but I love it. Love the Explorer btw!
When Fiskars took over Gerber the heritage was lost
Right! Something lost on most when a great and proven name is absorbed by another company.
My dad is a custom knife maker and I can honestly say that the 940 is the only production knife that I have or will carry. Thanks to your reviews I bought one and have never regretted it. Now that dad has pretty much quit making knives all together the 940 stays in my pocket and the ones that he made are to be passed down as air looms to our children. Again thanks for the introduction to the Bench-made brand.
I have fallen in love with the Kershaw Leek, really thin so easy to carry and open(as long as you remove the lame safety). Very similar to your Gerber.
I just want to say thanks. I live for your content! Our youth needs people like you
I was at walmart one day and my dad said something like oh hey a Grerber they are great and I asked him "when were you born" (and it was before fiskars bought gerber) and just said "that explains alot"
But fiskars is goddam awesome
You should definitely check out the Kershaw Leek, it has been my favorite EDC for probably 6 yrs.
Yeah, my first thought was "Hey! That looks a lot like the Kershaw Leek." I have had several leeks for ages. They are great, affordable knives.
I had both a Gerber Mark I and still have my Gerber Mark II, both bought in like 1978 down in Texas. The Mark II is in brand new condition, kept in a case these forty-plus years. Where is the Mark I with its premium brown leather sheath? My then-girlfriend and I were visiting old friends of hers in Athens, Georgia, and this one couple were really sweet and the husband really liked the Mark I, but they were living in a trailer and I could tell he couldn't afford one. So I just gave it to him, right there on the spot because he liked it so much, and I didn't want him going without and feeling shitty because of his financial situation at the time. Best thing I ever did because I miss that knife so much today, and that makes it even more meaningful. I hope it's still as razor sharp as it was the day I gave it to him, and that it has served him well. I don't even remember his name.
Thank you for the information!, I take the clips off as well, especially on my tape measures.
Thanks Cody! I am very pleased with it. Who cares what it's called, it's a great design and execution.
Excellent steel and action at an fair price. It's just the right size in my opinion for EDC. I emailed Nick Shabazz to review it and he said it was on his radar.
You gotta bring out a t-shirt with "It gives me the FIZZ" on it! :-)
《 LJK 》 100% would wear
Agreed
ive had a CRKT Eros Ken Onion design and same philosophy with the ball bearing extremely fast opening not assisted i was amazed at the speed and how smoothly it flips open looks very similar to the gerber cool design with the ball bearings
I won a 940 in a raffle the day, I was pumped! Awesome knife for sure. Great video brother. 👍🏼
Gerber was purchased by Fiskers many years ago, and that's when it's quality fell apart
Fiskers makes a good Picaroon though. lmao
That Gerber shorty did not cost $15 and a pixie did not cost $10. I bought those knives in the 70"s and still have them
"You didn't buy them for a certain price because I bought them for a different price"
A buddy of mine had a set of his grandparents Gerber steak knives that look similar to your grandfathers knife. They had a slim aluminum handle with blades that were about two inches long.
I love Cody’s old fashion ways and he is so humble at times , hardworking and seems like a real blue collar guy. I have a hard time understanding why he’s wearing a 6k wristwatch around the homestead.
Because he likes it?
@Tenspeed TheBikeHanger Wow your clever
@@wrenchspinner101 You're. You are = you're. YW...
Ever since I took the pocket clips off my knives haven't lost one thank you so much
I do too except the ones that have to stay on because they are part of the knife's construction. I just got a Kershaw Al Mar and twisted two of my T6 bits so I left it on.
The clips, on those knives that have them, were made to hold a few folded bills. Not to be clipped onto your jeans.
Depends on the pocket clip/knife and the type of pockets you have. Some knives pocket clips are garbage but others work very well
You know, it's almost like they designed the 'Fastball' in the same style as the 1776 + Kershaw Leek, then tookthe same blade steel and aluminium handle from the 940, then the 'Fastball' was born.
The name _really_ cheapens the knife in my opinion.
It looks more like the Skyline than the Leek except for the blade, which is very similar to the Leek.
@@jackagain8346 With they comparison of the two Kershaws, I was intending the blade shape.
Just a heads up. Found out from Olight that they retired the S1A...found about 6 months ago. Went to the Olight S1R II. I stayed single double a for the longest time, but I have fallen for the S1R II. The included rechargeable battery and cable take care of a lot of the problems from using the CR123. Just figured I would spread the word, thanks for the vid

No thank you for supporting us Jeff,

Just found your channel, I appreciate what I've seen so far, great work. It is always obvious when tubers support products I know to be garbage. I appreciate honest reviews by someone who knows the particular industry. I found your ultimate survival tool video pretty hilarious. You managed to make the tool look half useful when I know it wasnt. The plastic clang after your first swing had me rolling. And the saw looked like a wet noodle but you managed, I'm trying to imagine a cold hungry person with zero experience trying to manage that tool, the handle should be filled with gauze, tape and a hooked needle and thread to stitch wounds from tool use. But I just installed brass scales on my bugout, been almost a year and it is the best knife I have owned. I wouldn't buy another one because of it being benchmade. However I would buy one of those fastballs or something in m390 or elmax.
It's ground very thick behind the edge, and they're all wildly inconsistent. It's a huge step up from the norm, but they've still got a lot to learn.
It’s called a “Wharnecliffe” blade shape. Named after Lord Wharnecliffe in England many years ago who commissioned a new design for hunting and skinning. There’s your worthless knowledge for the day. 😂
Nick Navarre thx lol 😂
A real wharnecliffe blade has a completely flat edge. The edge on that Gerber sweeps up, so its not a real wharnecliffe at all. People are calling everything a "wharnecliffe" now because it's trendy. Just stop.
BornIn1500- They’ve evolved a bit since 1820 for sure... but still a Wharnecliffe if the spine has a sweep down to a point. The minor up swept edge doesn’t disqualify it from being a Wharnecliffe style blade... Here is an excerpt from a Knife Depot Blog...
“The standard definition has since broadened a bit to include any blade with a straight edge that tapers toward a point. (Although I’d argue some light curves in the blade don’t immediately disqualify it from being a Wharncliffe.)
The Wharncliffe is widely mixed up with the sheepsfoot blade and lesser known lambsfoot blade. In fact, manufacturers will often mislabel the blade style.
Whereas the Wharncliffe has a spine that gradually tapers to a point, the sheepsfoot blade has a spine and edge that remains parallel until the spine more dramatically curves to the edge. The result is lack of a piercing point”
@@neeko7878 I wouldn't say they've "evolved". It's that every design has been done many times over, so people are making every different shape they possibly can to differentiate themselves. And in the process, the specific definition of terms are being manipulated to mean something completely different. Wharncliffe used to mean something VERY specific. Now since people bastardized it, when people say "wharncliffe", nobody knows what the hell we're talking about since it's so broad. People have completely ruined it. That's a bad thing.
Modified Warnecliffe might be the better term. Thanks for the history!
You are right when i see gerber i think of Bear Grylls and that is not a good thing in my opinion.
Why not? Just wondering if you don't mind
