I got a DVD of this. I saw it ONCE on TV around 1994 and never forgot how amazing it was. Bought a DVD a good decade & a half later, once I could locate one. A treasured watch....
We added the some of the songs to our repertoire in our band. It was a great time being a Beatles fan in 1994. To sing the leadig vocal on "Road Runnner" and "Mr Postman" with my Höfner rythm guitar was moments I never forget.
It's a great movie, not many people know The Beatles' history before they were famous. It's a unique time in their lives and as with any musician, you start somewhere, mainly playing covers before venturing into your own content. I own a DVD with this movie and watch it every few years and enjoy it each time.
This was a beautiful commentary on this underrated movie. The only emotion the Beatles must evoke in us above all others is gratitude - gratitude to hear and know this music. The sheer energy of this film - the punk-like energy of the Hamburg stage - makes a powerful contribution to the Beatles legacy. Don’t forget - they were crazy young rockers before all else. And everything up until the last note of Abbey Road was built on that.
Excellent video! Thanks 🙏 BTW Klaus Voormann is a great bass player. The real deal. Great time, tone n feel with surprising lines that are artistic and tasteful.
i spent an hour with klaus voormann and mike gibbons, drummer from badfinger, in the morning at beatlefest before it started at 5pm.i bought another copy of the revolver album while i was there just so i could have klaus sign it.
No only have i seen BACKBEAT in 2000 i was in Hamburg Germany and hung out with the guy who got Astrid to let them make a moke up of the Atric where Stu did his art and he even shown me all the shooting spots and even took me to and took my photo in the Doorway where they did the late used photo for the Lennon Rock n Roll album in the 70's ..witch the story about the makeing of the album is better then the Album... the album is just old's covers Lennon wanted to do but Update a little... McCartney did one in 2000 Run Devil Run and Ringo did a cover album like those he did his before paul and john in 72 i think.
I'm not so sure. He'd already left the group when he died. So whether he was dead, or a struggling artist in Germany, it wouldn't have really changed what the Beatles did next.
@@HaveYouSeenWho knows, maybe Stu would have had a change of heart or miss the excitement of playing in a band and gone back to the Beatles, pretty sure John would have taken him back much to Paul’s chagrin. Although, I’m sure George Martin would have gotten rid of Stu for the same reason he didn’t want Pete Best when it came time for the recording studio.
@@HaveYouSeen Wow...Thanks for the speedy response and the info...I need to look into that film...I may have already seen it, not sure...I remember getting Backbeat on VHS when it came out...I love the Hamburg stuff...I even built a Lennon Rickenbacker 325 from scratch...vid of that build is on my channel...and I went to Hamburg and did the Reeperbahn and Lennon doorway pic...Anyway great video and thanks again
What keeps me from embracing this movie is that with main focus on Stu, he needs a really charismatic performance to hold interest next to the lads. Frankly Stephen Dorf is low wattage here IMO. I don’t buy his accent for starters. Maybe he matured as an actor later but he seems like just a pretty face here.
I imagine it was a combination of, "Who can we get from the US for some crossover appeal on the movie poster, who looks good, can play the right age, is competent, available at the time of filming and maybe a bit known in some circles, but will do it for cheap as this is a pretty small film, all-told?" And that was probably a surprisingly small number of actors.
I liked the film but being vrom a Liverpool Irish background I found some of the acccents awful. And I agree with Macca. He was toned down too much. He was a young rocker and should have sung Long Tall Sally in the film.
It was a very good movie just that the soundtrack although some of it is fun to listen, doesn't sound like the Beatles and in the movie they got the wrong beatle singing the wrong song e.g Paul sings Long Tall Sally but in the movie its John and the voice doesn't sound like neither.
I saw and I didn't like it. Sugary. The idea was fantastic. But decided to create another story with the same characters in the same place. They should have stick to the truth. I am still waiting for a wonderful movie, a noir movie, about the Beatles in Hamburg.
It would be interesting to know what you think, 'the truth' is? I know biopics can play low and loose with facts - you just have to see my video about numerous things The Doors movie got wrong, for example - however, I recall this one getting a fair amount of praise, re: accuracy. And some aspects like John singing one of Paul's songs, for example, is covered in the video.

It's a great thing to own on DVD. I don't see it on streaming, and the DVD is long OOP as far as I know! :)
Please, upload to the net!!! With spanish subtitles (XD), ¿Can i get your number? I want to find this movie along time ago, but i cant
SAMMY WERE CAN I GET THIS ON DVD PLEASE? CHEERS X❤
I’m 51 and saw this wonderful film in the theater 2 times when it was released. The soundtrack is awesome as well.
Same!
The best beatles movie, and what a soundtrack, LOVE It
Quite right - rock on!
The actor playing Paul McCartney (1942-1966) is doing a better job than William.

"All You Need is Cash" is the best Beatles movie, but this is second.

and it was that time as they say, where they truly made or sang their best music
The Soundtrack both cover band, and Jazz Score by Don Was, absolutely stellar!

It’s fab and it broke my heart 😢
I have been wanting to watch Backbeat for so long thank you
What I really like about this film and it’s soundtrack is it attracted me to grunge and punk primarily with the cover of long tall Sally
You're welcome, hope you enjoy it when you do!

I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET AND I'D LIKE TO.I'D LIKE SEEIN' IT ON GREEK TV TOO.
Love the movie. Got the DVD and tried to post it on my channel. Was blocked. Got to see and hear Klaus Voorman and Astrid at Beatlefest LA.
imagine a world, where stu didnt have a brain hemmorage and ends up drawing the album covers for the beatles when they go big
Indeed, I posed that question in the video.
The world would change not a whit if Stu had drawn their album covers.
I like the album covers now
Good movie, gets the early band dynamic pretty well.
Anyone out there ever seen the movie 'Birth of the Beatles'?
I remember the poster:
5 Musicians
4 Legends
3 Lovers
2 Best Friends
1 Band
Backbeat
i spent an hour with klaus voormann and mike gibbons, drummer from badfinger, in the morning at beatlefest before it started at 5pm.i bought another copy of the revolver album while i was there just so i could have klaus sign it.
I don't want to loose this feeling 'till I die, even though I have to hide it away.
Loved this movie. Still think it's the best film of the Beatles, including Across the Universe
Fantastic film
Love this movie, would love to watch again but cannot seem to find it
Might be worth trying to grab a used DVD?

Ian Hart played John Lennon again around 20 years later in Snodgrass...another good Beatles what-if movie
That was great
Why no comments on the perfect casting of Gary Bakewell, it’s like young Paul is just there
Yes.
I don’t know how but I do believe the trajectory of the Beatles would have changed had Stu not died.

I want to buy it
what movie is the clip at 0:11 from? I remember watching that but no idea what the name of it is
That's what I'd like to know...I don't recognise it
In His Life: The John Lennon Story, about 54m into the film in the Cavern Club while John and Paul do a skit onstage.

Though some inaccurate scenes, an excellent film overall, the sequel to nowhere boy.
You should have had a Spoiler Alert because you told us that Lennon died in 1980
4:27 I can’t imagine what his reaction was to himself getting punched by John Lennon
