    |-------------------------------------|
It is December 1943. Operation Fortitude, the Allies’ grand plan to mislead the Axis powers as to the location of the D-Day landings, is in full swing.
Key to the misinformation campaign was a collection of misfit spies, described by Ben McIntyre as “a bisexual Peruvian playgirl, a tiny Polish fighter pilot, a mercurial Frenchwoman, a Serbian seducer, and a deeply eccentric Spaniard with a diploma in chicken farming.”.
The “mercurial Frenchwoman” was Russian-born Nathalie Sergueiew. Known as Lily, she served as a double agent by working for both the German Abwehr and British military intelligence, MI5.
Despite her contribution to the war effort, her legacy has been overshadowed by an incident involving her pet dog Babs.
Lily has since been referred to most uncharitably as “the woman so obsessed with her dog that she tried to derail D-Day”.
Now, for the first time, author Peter Winnington has penned a biography of the life of the intrepid 5th D-Day spy and one which tells the personal side of Lily’s complicated tale.
This then is the story of Lily Sergueiew, the forgotten D-Day spy.

It is almost impossible to conceive of this woman's courage. Travelling alone through Europe pre-war; going into the lion's den by joining the Abwehr; becoming a double agent; every move of her life a dangerous one. Yet beaten in the end only by her own body. For those, like myself, who had never heard of her, thankyou so much for this video and the book. I saw her name mentuoned in passing in the book The Traitor of Colditz, and decided to follow up. I am simply astounded by her story. Her work after the war also testifies to her deep heart.
    May she be long remembered.

Jesus Christ is the only hope in this world no other gods will lead you to heaven

Holy Spirit Can give you peace guidance and purpose and the Lord will
      John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
      Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
      2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

I love my pets unconditionally. But I live in a peace time. Lily lived in a war time. She did not understand the concept of war. She did things impulsively. Although she managed not to act on the bad thought, the British intelligence actually did the right thing. Think of the horror that Jewish people went through. 20 millions died in the Soviet Union. And other people from Western and Eastern Europe. Lily did not understand the concept of "sacrifice".

I knew this story, But only recognised it once you mentioned the betrayal of her one and only request, about her beloved dog and the promise to get Babs to her, But for the life of me I do not know where or when i heard it. You Sir, put a lot of modern day documentarians to shame with how well you research your subject, and to me did not sound like an AI speech voice over. (Not enough errors) the script was perfect. Unlike (well pick any news story on any popular news site, the majority of their first articles are all grammatically wrong with poor spelling in places, Sure tell that editors have been phased out) Thanks for the fascinating stories you publish, and hope your channel has great success and grows immeasurably.

She was a very active & adventerous girl, & a loveable human being. This she showed towards her pet Barbs. Her sister death after war was equally sad.
Though she had her glorious moments like art galleries, Barbs, marriage, they were short lived.
I am greatfull she didnot die in war & was able to live 5years more after the war. Sad health reasons snatched her away from a blissed life of marriage.

What a brilliant, brave and versatile talent she was! " Divided skirts, a bold move for the times!" How disconnected the world has been from the core human values of a woman! How sad a reflection on human intelligence to trap a woman in the gender mould! Can many people even today match Lily's adventurous and wholesome life in the face of such adversity? Remarkable woman. I would like to read the book for more on her cycling expeditions. Thank you, Philip, for the excellent video. Thanks to both the author and you, she isn't all that "forgotten" a spy. They are definitely there, you just have to look for them (they tend to fly under the radar of mass media somewhat). The head of the Children's Cancer Research centre in Melbourne comes to mind, a 40 year veteran contributor to the much higher survivability rates of of childhood cancer. Another one is the scientist who exposed massive coverup/mismanagement at the QLD forensics branch, successfully fought for a government investigation and internal overhaul recently. Sorry the names of these ladies escape me tonight but they're easily found if you search.

Another excellent documentary, thank you. I was aware of Lily Sergueiew from a book by another popular author and it does seem she was treated rather shabbily by the British. Along with the other Double Cross agents and the teams involved in the deception, she helped to ensure the success of D-Day.

Given what has come to light since this time and, of course, the questionable loyalty of the current civil service one must wonder whether the bungling on the part of some of the British wasn't deliberate!

I found September 17 as the date that Russia invaded Poland. Suppose 17 days do matter, especially for the Poles.

I was enthralled by this documentary and learned much that I didn't know and a reinforcement of something I have long suspected. Her story is one of heroism and fortitude. A great woman indeed and I sincerely respect that quality. To withhold recognition is disgusting in the extreme and totally unconscionable. This leads to the reinforcement of my belief that the actions of the government and security services shows these organisations for what they were and still are. They will use, abuse and discard anybody that benefit their requirements to promote an agenda. The Germans did it and the allies did it like for like. This is exploitation of the most callous and sometimes deadly type. My deepest respect to this lady, this heroine and my deep loathing of systems that USE decent people to further their own despotic goals.

In a short time i have watched the stories of Polish pilots during the battle of Brittain and how the were treated after the war. Then a documentary about Alan Turing and now this woman who just wanted her dog around her. What were the famous words of Churchill again, did he knew what these words meant........

A remarkable and very brave woman. What a testament to the English establishment, paying her a miserly income and deducting her rent. We will never see the likes of Lily again. The year Lily died, i was born and here i am 73 yrs later feeling so much anger and shame on how Lily was treated. God bless her.

Speaking as a English Man I think Lilley was treated very badly by the British intelligence Services and I'm disgusted by the whole lot of them and they obviously didn't give a shit as long as we won the war;and I had three Uncles and a farther who fought in World War two and one was killed when he trod on a Landmine and left a Widow and a young son and My late father was one of the first one's to Liberate Belsom Bardon Death Camp and My late father had Knightmares for over fifty years until his own death on Monday April 29th 1996:and My Uncle Norman fought in the Burma Campaign and he had a hatred for the Japanese and he wouldn't have anything Japanese in his Property

I don't understand what your point is. The British were bankrupt, and had to be very suspicious of everything given what was at stake. Like you, my family served throughout the war and one of my uncles was also one of the first in to Belsen. Individual bungling and incompetence are a fact of life. Feeling hard done by on behalf of others, who probably never complained, is, I think, rather immature! I wonder, have you ever served?
