Amazing tutorial. Are you using only fondant or fondant with with a little tylose powder. When I make my figures and keep it to dry after a day or so it forms cracks could you help me as to why this happens. Can you give me the recipe of the modelling paste.
Hey Marilyn, I use a product called Saracino which is now available to buy in most places. Its a combination of Modelling chocolate and Modelling paste. Great for modelling as it doest crack...s x
Excellent tutorial. I wanted to ask some advice... I recently made a cake topper figure for the first time and I used the pre coloured icing fondant. It got soft really quickly so the model did squish down a bit. I had to keep it in the fridge until the final reveal otherwise he would have probably collapsed a bit more. When I bought the Fondant icing from Hobbycraft, I saw there is Modelling Paste icing as well. Is this different from regular fondant? Does it hold its shape better? I've heard people mention Tylose powder to help harden the icing but I dont know how to use it. What are you using here as the final result looks really cool :)
Hey Sharon, yes modelling paste is better for figures. It firms up really well and holds its shape. I prefer Renshaw modelling paste for bodies and saracino modelling paste for things with finer detail like face and hands. Although Renshaw have now got Belgium modelling chocolate which is amazing too x
@@CakeNation Thank you. I used Renshaw (pre coloured) ready to roll icing. Is this softer than the Renshaw 'modelling paste'? I could only see that in white in Hobbycraft, so you colour yours yourself with food dye? I've seen a few others who've used the same stuff as I did but they've added Tylose powder which I gather 'stiffens' the icing a bit. I just kept mine in the fridge between making the components but he went a bit floppy when he was on the cake later, esp with the heat from the candles.
yes you could use tylose. I struggle to use this afterwards though as it really hardens very quickly. I use sugar flair colours to colour mine. I only ever buy black or red in pre coloured ones...s x

how far in advance should the figure be made? How should they be stored?
you can make them weeks/months in advance. I store in a cool dark place in a box x
May I know what brush do you use for coloring the eyes?
just a very small and thin paint brush. I think its 00 in size x
Thank you ❤️
