I never expected Yahtzee to mention 3 houses, much less give it something that could be interpreted as compliment without also bashing it. Big day for annoying people like me
This video is hilarious. And honestly does make me wonder why there hasn't been a superhero persona game considering it'd be about a hero that does episodic stuff for half a year and build relationships with other superheroes.
Talking about Bibleman and Doki Doki Lit. Club in the same sentence (or at least in the same visual) is not something I thought I'd see today. Then again, it's a Wednesday, so gotta expectt anything. I've spent a few hours in the game and I pretty much agree with everything here. It *wants* to be FE: 3 Houses, it *wants* to be Slay the Spire or Hearthstone, or any other card battler. It *wants* to be a cool and fun super hero video game. but it kind of just fails to pull it all together in the end. There's the skeleton of a potentially really good game in there, unfortunately that skeleton never leaves its parents basement and spends all its time working on its shrine to (apparently Dane Whitman/Black Knight)
The Three Houses comparison is interesting, I thought he dropped 3H pretty quickly when it came up in his Astral Chain review. Wonder if he went back to it at some point
To be overly pedantic, the "Extinct Easter Islander's who cut down all their trees to make more stone heads" are more properly called the Rapa Nui, are still very much alive, probably didn't cut down any trees to make the moai statues, which were full human figures, not just heads (citation 1). 1. Hunt, T. L., & Lipo, C. P. (2012). The statues that walked unraveling the mystery of Easter Island. Counterpoint.
Good review Yahz. Just wanted to point out that there's good evidence the Easter Island natives didn't cut down all their trees. The theory has moved on somewhat as it's much more likely the island was ravaged by disease after contact with Europeans (par for the course, sadly), and then there were successive waves of colonialism.
As someone who adores Marvel and XCOM, this was as close as my opinions have aligned with Yahtzee's in what seems like ages. Combat's great. Every superhero (even your self-insert OC) can wreck shop by themselves, but there are also some key party synergies (e.g. Strange needing Heroism for damage buffs and Nico generating a lot of it, or Magick's near limitless ability to reposition with portals to set up Spidey's endless environmental attacks) . The open world crafting stuff is a chore and utterly meaningless (you can instead scrap cards to get the requisite resources instead, it's faster), and this is from a guy who enjoys open world faffing-about. The "dating sim" element I really could do without, except it's what gates the superheroes' special abilities, like Magick's free portal refills or Spidey's Heroism rebates. I could've gone with a more streamlined version of this ala XCOM Chimera Squad.
Actually, if the main character's backstory was multiple choice, that might have been more interesting. Not in the way you make the story before the game begins but have other characters comment on the backstory and let the player choose how to answer. Like maybe your stories of old weren't that fantastic or heroic as legends made them out to be or there's aspects of the story lost to time you can fill in. Shit like that at least makes the player more invested in filling this backstory the way they want it
Yahtzee’s been saying card battlers aren’t his thing and he’s been avoiding them for like a year now and all of a sudden he’s really into slay the spire
I'm right there with you. Game writing is usually quite bad in general so it isn't as much a detraction as a lot of people think. I'm loving the game 90hrs in.
Just finished it this earlier this week. The campy cheesy dialogue works for me. Ironically the only person whose quips don’t work for me is Tony. Keaton is a good VO and I don’t know why he decided to go with an RDJ impression. The Blade subplot might be my favorite thing at the Abbey.
@@highspeedstrongstyle9061 I don't think it even was a RDJ impression. If you look even in the older comics, Tony Stark's just...always been a douche like that.
Honestly, I'm just glad Yahtzee found 3 Houses to be "deep and pretty" concidering he skipped it the first time. I mean yeah, Fire Emblem has gotten a bit too weeaboo-like with age, but it's still damn good storytelling and gameplay
For all it's faults, FE3H is very well-executed, and it now has the advantage of being compared to Engage, to which it is vastly superior and infinitely less weeby.
Spectacular historical collapse reference with the Easter Island deforestation. Just finished a Uni class about civ collapse and it's neat to see the applications of teaching in funny UA-cam vids.
Everyone out here mentioning the best lines, and no one talks about how swapping the control scheme is “about as good for immersion as a mischievous seal at a water birth”? 3:00
'ang about, I thought I vaguely remembered Yahtzee saying Three Houses was too boring to get into. Where'd this praise come from? Have I slipped into a parallel universe again?
Using a maleficent doll for Lilith seems like a good choice, from what I've seen she's as "generic evil sorceress" as they get in this game - I wonder if the Freddie Mercury one was intended or if it's just a moustachioed Ken/GI Joe or whatever... Why am I thinking of little girls (or boys) dolls ? What have you done to me, Yahtzee ?
You know there are thousands of fanfictions about a story or franchise that have some kind of special school. The FE3H, Harry Potters and My Heros of this world
@@stan_1999 I mostly avoid the HP fandom, too much bad luggages and memories, plus it's many writers first fandom and it shows with the amount of... questionable content. MHA it's not bad tho, i like the fanon more than canon even.
All right people make your bets! Will Yahtzee also choose the "Volume" hair option like most streamers*, or go for a ccccombo breaker? *Yep, Amy did fall for that too
Not gonna lie been loving the combat. But a friend of mine came by and was watching me play the other night just when I was doing a hangout with Wolverine. There we are at the pool in speedos, and the Hunter character has a choker on. My friend asked me "What the fuck are you playing"
Seeing Fire Emblem Three Houses mentioned in a positive light despite originally never getting a zp-Did yahtzee end up playing the entire thing or just based the comparison off of the little bit he did play? Some mysteries may never be solved…
Oh no, triple a has finally figured out the right mishmash of conficting grab bag features with stuff like XCOM inspired combat Yahtzee actually likes to make his review sound almost more confused than blisteringly angry. They're gotten too good.
Quite a few times over the years I've found myself holding a mouse in one hand and a controller in the other one because it was somehow a better experience than trying to commit to one of the two input methods and their respective shortcomings. On an unrelated note I'm now wondering what would happen if someone tried to design gameplay entirely around having way too many currencies but not as a cynical cash grab but rather as a legit core mechanic, would that just be a market speculation simulator?
A game around balancing Currencies sounds like what the Sorting Department would need to do in games like Satifactory. Sell this resource, buy that, bribe the space trucker to offland this to there for cheaper
Agree with everything here only thing u failed to mention is how oddly buggy it is for a full price. I genuinely experienced a game breaking bug with hero ops halfway through and had to start from scratch.
Game-breaking bugs in a big-budget release is just par for the course these days; hardly worth mentioning. It used to be that we were aghast if a game required a day 1 patch; now we're surprised if it doesn't.
@@NickTheDM fair point still think it's bs and it seems to be such a common bug when I looked for solutions online I feel it deserved at least a passing mention or offhand joke and just because it's common for games nowadays doesn't mean it should be tolerated or accepted.
It was buggy in the first few days it seems but it was patched quite quickly after launch. I personally only experienced one but these things vary wildly depending on your specs. Aside from that the game is pretty well optimized. and doesn't seem to hog a lot of resources if you don't want it to.
1:46 hey yahtzee, i don't know if you read youtube comments but if you do i'd suggest you to check out wildfrost. It's a neat little card battler sort of like slay the spire, except that you manage some minions as well and there is a turn timer mechanic so it's not just "you attack then enemy attacks". It's still in development but i played the demo during the steam next fest and i liked it so much that i didn't turn off my computer so i could play it for a few days after the demo period ended.
So it’s been revealed the 2K launcher on PC is what’s causing the slow down and frame rate issues on the PC version. It is recommended to disable the 2K launcher on any 2K game on steam. Sadly, that’s not an option on the epic game store.
I'd love to comment on every video to increase "viewer engagement", but Yahtz always so thoroughly covers every beat that I never know what to say. Leave some scraps for the scrubs, sir. It makes us feel ever so clever.
Spot. On. Not to mention they hand you the only thing you’re working towards for every character the second you beat the game so there’s nothing to do and new game + offers nothing.
Watch the SkillUp review. The dating game stuff is absolutely terrible, but the actual gameplay is kickass. It is half a great game and half a terrible game.
@@mittensbro Eh, the dating game stuff is kinda funny. Like it's definitely not good but it serves as better framing for interpersonal storytelling than if it was just a string of missions with storytelling in-between as cutscenes. Actually running around with your character is a chill part of the gameplay, it's just not a very well-executed one. The map is atmospheric, but clunky and confusing in its design, the collectathon and mini-puzzle aspect is neat but again, too confusing and not intuively presented. You don't want to scour every single corner of the map because it's not very interesting but acquiring and upgrading cards, finding keys and chests, talking to characters, sparring, leveling up relationships to get combo cards, sending teammates on solo-missions, etc... it serves the same function as building your homebase in x-com and the game would be worse without it. The idea is good, and it's better that it's there than not, but it could've been executed way better. The cosmetics/grindathon monetization is just plain bad though, all customizable options should be attainable by just playing the game casually.
0:54 I love fire emblem, but the actual tactics in Three Houses definitely aren’t that deep. It seems like most of the effort went into the character interactions that time around. Maybe this game has combat that’s less deep, but that would have to be pretty shallow.
Man, is it just me or does the ZP intro and outro RAWK get louder and louder every episode? Bump it down 50% man! Could just be my shite hearing having to crank up the volume to hear the dialogue clearly though
Marvel's Midnight Suns reminds me of that one youtuber playing modded Skyrim: "Is that a crab with a top hat?! This is too much for me. Come on, Master Chief. Let's get the fnck out of here"
Even though I can agree with the complaints about how it looks in the in-between missions state, the games strength lies in how easy it becomes a routine and there are just enough moving around and random bits of dialogue to not make it tedious. Sadly, the game underperformed in the initial sales, so asides the pre-planned DLCs, we are unfortunately not likely to get any more of this.

Hell, Justice League Dark. Enchantress. Even the MCU has its fair share of genuine magic now. There's plenty of supernatural superhero stuff.
You know, I've been watching Yahtzee since 2008, and I must say; "As good for immersion as a mischievous seal at a water birth" might be his best simile yet
Best line I have heard in a while .... "wait how is this getting me any closer to pegging doctor strange." LOVE IT
Okay...this one was inspired. Best ZP of 2022.
Damn i haven’t check in on this channel in a while and i happened to click on this video and was holy shit this some gas. But now all comments are like this one’s the best one
Recency bias
I never expected Yahtzee to mention 3 houses, much less give it something that could be interpreted as compliment without also bashing it. Big day for annoying people like me
Yup... time to start bugging him to do a review
This video is hilarious. And honestly does make me wonder why there hasn't been a superhero persona game considering it'd be about a hero that does episodic stuff for half a year and build relationships with other superheroes.
Don't know, but I'm all for it. Also a One Piece game with character creation.
@Rene Martinez which team members would be in it?
Midnight Suns does have a bit of Persona feel to it, honestly. Not a lot, but enough to recognize.
Ugh, plz no...
As a Fire Emblem fan, it's nice to be acknowledged
With this and the Astral Chain video one day we might actually convince Yahtzee to review one some day.
Honestly one of the best written ZPs ever. Been a fan for a decade and still, your writing continues to tickle
Considering Dane was just added to the MCU, I’m not surprised they’re already preparing to over promote him
eh in most reviews and even in yathzee vid he praises the card battler part of the game, so idk what u talking about.
Counterpoint.
the image of captain america asking Magic: The Gathering if it ate all the wagon wheels is such beautifully absurd comedy i love it
"FUCK YOU! I'M TRYING!". Just summarized my entire life in one sentence. Bravo.
I legit had to pause the video to recover when you said "about as good for emersion as a mischievous seal at a water birth" .... that is gold
Holy crap at least I'm not the only one
I didn't pause, but I did have to rewind 30 seconds to allow myself to catch what I missed while guffawing
How did he come up with that one?
Shit like that at least makes the player more invested in filling this backstory the way they want it
The characters might not be all that complex but they're all very, very adorable.
Honestly kind of love Blade.
Yahtzee’s been saying card battlers aren’t his thing and he’s been avoiding them for like a year now and all of a sudden he’s really into slay the spire
Slay the Spire is just based XD
They must of threw a bunch of cards at him and one stood.
I can only play the Strength guy in Slay the Potato.
It's like how he hates JRPGs but really loves Persona.
It's possible that a game in a genre you don't like can still be just REALLY good!
This is so funny and I am absolutely the Marvel fan happily enjoying my invitation to a very dramatic birthday party hahaha
3:00
After 30 hours of playing this game, I hate how accurate this is.
“X-benedict”, now that’s just good clean fun
"Going Fishing with Blade" sounds like the best kind of 50,000 word fan-fiction.

'ang about, I thought I vaguely remembered Yahtzee saying Three Houses was too boring to get into. Where'd this praise come from? Have I slipped into a parallel universe again?
That's how bad this is, it makes three houses seem fun by comparison.
It's still boring. But not as bad as Midnight Suns. He didn't say it was good. He said it wasn't as deep or pretty.
I didn't even know Yahtzee played 3H fully, let alone liked it
I know he won’t but it would be fun to see Yahtzees take on dwarf fortress
As a South African, I'd like to say that the "12 South African Rands" bit was a nice touch.
"it's a card battler..."
*Spongebob getting up to leave meme*
What's weird is despite not having micro transactions it is built like it should.
Never ever thought I'd hear yahtzee mention Fire Emblem!
X-cellent joke, Yahtzee. I couldn't stop laughing 😂👍🏼
I think he actually kind of enjoyed this one. Definitely enjoyed the combat
The combat keeps me coming back to the game, it's top notch.
As always, thanks for talking me out of spending my money on a new game Yahtz
Incredibly disappointing that after you gag about gingers in a Catholic orphanage bit "until the real threat shows up" the threat ISN'T a priest
Thanks, the X-Benedict gave me a good chuckle. I guess i'm in the age for dad jokes.
Confused?
Over designed?
Silly in really weird ways?
Yep, sounds like superhero comics and this shit already owns a chunk of my soul.
"...which is about as good for immersion as a mischievous seal at a water birth."
okay that one took me out
"Which is about as good for immersion as a mischievous seal at a water birth".
When does Yahtzee get his Pulitzer?
Funnily enough i love FE:TH exactly because it feels at time like fanfics and i love writing fanfics about the characters (mostly about them pashing)
Slay the Spire is so much fun!
I saw this game on steam, went to the steam page, saw you could already buy multiple versions of the currency and then put it on ignore.
considering the ending, this might be one of the flat-out funniest ones hes put out in a while
Seeing Fire Emblem Three Houses mentioned in a positive light despite originally never getting a zp-Did yahtzee end up playing the entire thing or just based the comparison off of the little bit he did play?
Some mysteries may never be solved…
Yahtzee really had Strange on the brain.
I feel like I owe everyone an apology because I'm pretty sure this game was made for me. 😅
When he said Xcom and Marvel I thought the same
Haha despite the avowed hatred of deck builders slay the spire got it's claws in Yahtzee in the end
"Mid-shite bums" had me rolling
The game and this description sounds so astonishingly bizarre I spent the entire first minute thinking it was some kind of April fool's Day joke
I love this game and hope there will be a more open world rpg sequel
Bibleman got me good
Oh no, triple a has finally figured out the right mishmash of conficting grab bag features with stuff like XCOM inspired combat Yahtzee actually likes to make his review sound almost more confused than blisteringly angry. They're gotten too good.
"Ableist Slur card" was an absolute gem.
'Spiderman's Ableist Slur Frame' oh so the Spiderman is from Spider Man Lotus?
Quite a few times over the years I've found myself holding a mouse in one hand and a controller in the other one because it was somehow a better experience than trying to commit to one of the two input methods and their respective shortcomings.
On an unrelated note I'm now wondering what would happen if someone tried to design gameplay entirely around having way too many currencies but not as a cynical cash grab but rather as a legit core mechanic, would that just be a market speculation simulator?
This is how I played Lost Ark and it was an infinitely better experience than just choosing one or the other.
He tends not to mention bugs because they often get patched and then that makes the content get dated quicker than usual.
Yahtzee just does not miss. These are still hilarious.
Wait a second. Positioning? Attacks and abilities based on cards? Did Marvel Midnight Suns take design documents from Metal Gear Acid?
Yeah, they wish
More like the awkward love child of XCOM and Chain of Memories, with a bit of cross breeding with Fire Emblem
Is blade actually in it? That would be the one thing to make me interested
Yeah! He's one of the better-written characters, and you unlock him at the very start.
Slay the spire, you will get into it, and then notice you have been playing so long that the apocalypse hit months ago and you did not notice.
Everything he said is absolutely correct and the game is kind of a trainwreck but it's a FUN kind of trainwreck so it's fine :D
Spot. On. Not to mention they hand you the only thing you’re working towards for every character the second you beat the game so there’s nothing to do and new game + offers nothing.
Bounced on my doctor's third eye to this for hours.
This game sounds REALLY interesting. Damn, now I have to know more!
Get a one game gamefly subscription for a month for 15 bucks and play it. Can't beat that. Its pretty good
Watch the SkillUp review.
Let's split the difference - you shake Captain America's bum, I'll pinch Scarlet Witch's hand.
Let's get the fnck out of here"
Dunkey. An all time classic video that one.
Funny as hell... But gotta admit.... I liked this game quite a bit lol.
I love the wolverine face stuck to the blob guys.
Oh this should be a fun post ZP
Holy shit that Bibleman reference is a deep fucking cut!
That was a STRONG finish bro
This review made me feel better about life and my place in it
Even though I can agree with the complaints about how it looks in the in-between missions state, the games strength lies in how easy it becomes a routine and there are just enough moving around and random bits of dialogue to not make it tedious. Sadly, the game underperformed in the initial sales, so asides the pre-planned DLCs, we are unfortunately not likely to get any more of this.
This game sounds like something that would be mentioned offhand in a sitcom.
As soeone who really enjoyed midnight suns, thanks for the fire emblem game recomendation =D
'"as good as a mischievous seal at a water birth"... Ok, i'm stealing that one.
