About the rain: When you meet Quirrel in the city of tears, he says that someday, he'd like to see the source of all the rain. The last time you meet him is at the blue lake: his journey is complete.
Actually you can see only his sword once again later at the blue lake, and I cannot help but only imagine that he literally ended his journey IN the lake.
@@raywhitethorngalathynius Yes, I meant that the last time you meet him (out of several) is when you find the sword on the shore where you had a conversation with him earlier.
From how much quarrel talks about how important weapons are to carry then coming back to the blue lake to see his nail in the ground really struck a emotion in me, he’s explored everything and he’s ready for his time to come
Another cool one for ambience and music: At Queen's Station, you can actually hear the stag bells and voices of crowds of passengers in the background. It is very faint but it is there, as Quirrel mentions. You can hear it best through headphones.
Consudering that by the time p5 happens, most players already encountered and defeated Hornet Sentinel who also saved the knight from a corpse falling apart, i think our little ghost can take a hint...
See, there's some Cool Lore behind even that. It is impossible to access the Pantheon of Hallownest without the Void Heart, and Winged Nosk is only in the PoH. Not only are you unable to get the Void Heart without beating Hornet Sentinel, but the Void Heart is explicitly earned immediately after the scene in which the Knight remembers its past. *Winged Nosk only exists once the Knight has its memory back.*
Hey, here's a fact about Soul Catcher, Shaman Stone, and Soul Eater They all represent opening shells, the Catcher is the snail with the least space, as if something is still living inside Shaman Stone is halfway, something is coming out, something big and powerful! Soul Eater, it's empty, shown to be an abyss for holding something that can be collected I hope this makes sense and doesn't make me sound like an idiot
Ok here's a fun one. In the Abyss, there is actually music in the background. It is very slow and very low pitched. This is actually the same lead as the main theme of the game.
Undertale likes to twist theme into something else's theme. Like how mad dummy and napstablook (i hope i remember the name correctly) has similar vibe.
Some things I also noticed when replaying the game were as followed: 1.) The designs on the background gates/fences appear to depict the resident god of the region. In the City of Tears/Hallownest proper, the King can be seen in the filigree, in Greenpath the fences have Unn's designs wrought into them, in the Resting Grounds, Radiance's crown and arches feature prominently, and in the Queen's Gardens the filigree is...a little harder to make sense of, but it appears to be the White Lady. Interestingly enough, even in architecture that seems to match with the Pale King (like that one area in Greenpath that looks like the Forgotten Crossroads), his sign doesn't show up, which makes me think that that was a sort of territory thing or marker for the different tribes that lived in that region/their gods 2.) The White Palace starts out very open and lush with foliage, and slowly becomes more and more cramped, dark, and tunnel-like the closer you get to the Pale King. Many things can be taken from this, but I'm going to assume that it's supposed to represent the union between the Pale King and White Lady of sorts, with 'her' part of the palace being big and open and full of plantlife, whereas areas associated with him are very dark, to the back of the palace, and cramped, like worm tunnels (likewise the Path of Pain, his mental flagellation for caring for the Pure Vessel, is almost all a dark tunnel, with thorny vines everywhere rather than the lush leaves and huge twisting branches visible from the normal White Palace). I found it a cool detail thematically because it kinda makes you feel like you're venturing deeper and deeper into the dragon's den (so to speak), but it could also be an interesting potential read on their characters/personalities when one remembers that the King, according to Lemm, was an exceptionally reclusive figure, whereas the White Lady joyfully speaks to who she presumes is Ogrim and overall seems more open to the idea of socializing, as would fit with 'her' area of the Palace 3.) Similar to how the wind stops when you get the Monarch Wings, when you are about to fight Hornet in Kingdom's Edge, the wind starts to gust from her back, into the eyes of the Knight. This gives her a distinct advantage in the first part of the fight, as the ash-choked wind would presumably be an irritant to any assailant no matter if they're vessel or mortal bug, and since the wind appears to be blowing from the corpse of the Wyrm, I'm going to assume that's supposed to tie into the whole 'daughter of Hallownest' shtick she has going for her (though I have no idea why any remnant of the Pale King would help her, other than the fact that she appears to be taking his place in judging the purity/capability of the new vessel; perhaps that is also why she has his leitmotif) 4.) The titles of dream bosses and certain npcs (such as Lost Kin, Soul Tyrant, the Last Stag, and Millibelle) also change when the Knight learns more about the world they're in. For example, though they recognized that the Broken Vessel was related to them in some way (being able to identify them as a vessel in the first place), they had no idea who they were until after they watched them reach out for them and realized that there was still some scrap of their sibling in there, after which the title becomes 'Lost Kin'. Likewise, the Soul Tyrant doesn't earn that title until after they've seen all the bodies of the people he's killed, Millibelle changes from 'the banker' to 'the thief' after she steals your money (and isn't it amusing, how their solution to getting their money back is to literally beat it out of her), and the stag's title changes from 'The Last Stag' to 'The Old Stag' after he tells the Knight that he's hopeful more of his kind is out there 5.) Before you kill a Dreamer, the candles around them are lit; after, they are put out. Though Monomon doesn't have candles around her tank, Quirrel keeps up this trend by telling you that the Madame's life has 'been extinguished' 6.) I may be wrong, but fitting with the first point I made, the imagery of the King in the Soul Sanctum appears to be less prominent/incomplete when compared to the rest of the City of Tears, which fits very well with the fact that the Soul Master ended up going against the King's wishes and going on with his cruel experiments in search of his own immortality 7.) The 'egg' that the Knight hatched from looks more like a seed pod; it has a nearly barklike texture to the surface and trailing vines that look like they're actually a part of the surface, not stuck through, like the Pale King hooked his eggs up to IVs or something. This makes sense because, well...their mother is a tree. So if anyone's still like 'haha how the hell did the king make the vessels', it appears that he went the usual old route of fucking the tree (somehow.), letting her grow the eggs into a seed pod, and then sticking them in the Abyss to slorp up that sweet, sweet void juice. God I hate having to type all that. 8.) The Knight has a very brief animation for falling into acid where they panic-flail their arms and legs while reaching for the platform, which means that they can feel pain and fear. Which I find interesting, but not really all that surprising, given the fact that it seems to be implied in the game that they are not actually fully hollow; while the Pale King claims that void hollows people out, he is very much wrong about a lot of things in-game, and multiple npcs comment specifically on the Knight's will (including the White Lady, who urges you to replace the Hollow Knight!). This is further supported by how the only endings that show a decisive end to the Radiance are the ones where the Knight breaks from the King's plan and confronts the Radiance directly, in Dream no More and Embrace the Void, which imo implies that they were not hollow, merely empty of thought 9.) The Kingsoul in-game costs the most charm notches, at 5, and pairs the best with Glowing Womb, which uses the soul generated by Kingsoul to create hatchlings that kill themselves to fight your battles, doing...pretty shitty damage to them while also negating the benefits of the Kingsoul charm, which I found really fucking hilarious given the fact that it's mr 'no cost too great, I'm going to use my children to fight my battles's' dedicated charm (arguably, both the Pale King and the White Lady's charm now that I think about it, since each half makes one whole. Which is, quite franky, worse) 10.) In the Pantheons, all the 'true' adult gods have a specific arena, with two pillars in the background, only Godseeker watching, and arenas very heavily designed to their elements. These true gods are, of course, Nightmare King Grimm, the Pure Vessel, and the Radiance; though I don't think there's really any deep lore tied to it, I found it cool that there was an arena change to show the difference between what Godseeker considers a god (aka, anything strong enough to satiate her power kink), and what we know are actual gods/Higher Beings, like Grimm (or the Nightmare Heart posessing him, whatever your interpretation), the Radiance, and the Pure Vessel (who we know is a true god by virtue of their parenthood and by them being raised to 'prime form'). And though all the different bosses have arenas that look like their boss areas in-game, that two-pillar only-Godseeker format really highlights the changes made to fit them, which I find really cool Just...the art and story direction in this game, man. It's fucking astounding. I can probably come up with more if I just wander around and look at shit, too, which is really outstanding considering the fact that I got Hollow Knight nearly a year ago now. But all the little details and cues they work into the environmental art is beyond amazing, and I can't wait to see how it compares to the art direction for Silksong, especially since Pharloom already has a far more chaotic feel of a kingdom than Hallownest (which is technically dead, yeah, but relatively well-organized compared to everything we see in the demos and the trailors)
I think that, while you are right that the Knight isn't fully hollow until they get Void Heart, I think there's a logical explanation to them flailing from the acid- even if they have no emotions, thoughts, etc., their self preservation would still kick in whether they were actually afraid or not.
@@electroshockgamer2733 Where does this idea that the Void Heart makes the Knight truly hollow come from? Nothing about the Void Heart's description implies that it makes the Knight truly hollow, in fact the description confirms that the Knight has a will as it reads "An emptiness that was hidden within, now unconstrained. Unifies the void under the bearer's will." meaning without a will the Knight can not unify the void which they do in the fight against the radiance. Also if you are suggesting that the phrase "An emptiness that was hidden within, no unconstrained." Means the Knight has become completely hollow then you are mistaken because emptiness is a synonym for void not hollowness as multiple sources such as the hunter's journal when talking about the siblings and hornet when mentioning how the knight is different from her, use emptiness as a substitute for the word void.
"Did you catch that the wind in the Ancient Basin dies down when you get the Monarch Wings?" That was actually the only one on this list that I (somehow) had never noticed before, and I thank you for bringing it to my attention sir!
Same here. I noticed pretty much everything else (actually only noticed the giant king's idol statues today as I was doing a a blackmoth randomizer run).
Yeah, I barely noticed the winds disappeared when I finally got the monarch wings. I did notice the area felt a bit different, I just wasn't quite sure how until now.
I will add one thing that I think noone has pointed out: In Godhome you can fight Winged Nosk, but this time it imitates Hornet. This means that the knight remembers Hornet as an ally. This also means that the knight isn't truly hollow and can still form memories and feelings.
you didn't even mention the fact that the city of tears has a poorer side and a richer side, as seen by the architecture, characters, and enemies on each side
Indeed, if you read the hunter's journal, the description of the smaller husks in the city mentions oppression and corruption among the riches before the kingdom fell.
Also a comment on Nosk: if you dream nail the dead people on the way to the boss, first you become a little scared because it is all very strange and that’s a cool detail, but also one of them says “Brother” or something, which is probably their last word before dying, when they saw the illusion of their brother
Despite the fact that I know exactly what's happening, every time I see my own little Nosk copy in Deepnest there's this intense feeling of discomfort lol, they really nailed the ambiance of that.
What blows my mind much more, that the background often reveals, that you’re in the opposite side of some areas, or between some areas through tunnels or something. Like in the path between the junkpit and the nailsmith, where you can spot the fungal wastes respectively the royal waterways in the background. This happens quite often in subareas And the soultwister represents the shell of the soul master incl his cloak Also things related to Nosk: 1. Nosk appears much earlier in the area above the hot spring when you’re coming through other ways than the room of the mantis lords! This doesn’t happen if you have defeated the lords already ! 2. Nosk changes it’s strategy in the pantheon of hallownest to something the knight is related to: hornet ! I really dig that detail
Oh, that's clever, Winged Nosk is encountered after the Knight has already had many encounters with Hornet and found out that they are half-siblings, so it makes sense that now the Knight actually has memories for Winged Nosk to copy!
A fun fact relating to the Fog Canyon: Its theme is Greenpath's theme, watered down. Makes sense- the place is surrounded from 2 sides by a form of Greenpath. But actually, Wanderer's Journal actually confirms that Fog Canyon was in fact, a part of Greenpath
As an aspiring artist, Hollow Knight has always been one of my biggest inspirations for my work. I mean, who could resist marveling at the alluring charms of the Flukemarm...? Edit: A commenter on my post has since enlightened me to my broken and twisted sense of what is and is not “alluring,” and I am now set to be married to a Carver Hatcher (love you, Debby) within the year.
I have no earthly idea who “motto motto” is, but I appreciate the affection from a human. You see, I was an outcast from my own planet, so nobody “likes” me there, anymore.
Regarding #14: It took me forever to realize, but this also applies to the Mantis Claw. There's a bunch of them in the background and the player "takes one".
I just love that the start of broken vessels theme is all broken chords, signifying that the knight has to attack it due too the infection that started possessing it. But as the fight goes on, the music becomes a lot smoother and shows that the broken vessel is just like the knight but met an unfortunate end
Another ambience thing is the giant teeth scattered around the Hunter's cave. First time I saw those, I thought to myself 'oh this is totally gonna be a boss fight' and left, only returning later (after hornet and a bit of fungal wastes), only to find out what it actually was later.
3:35 “Safe haven” lol. 6:50 Yes! This one I actually figured out myself, it’s so cool how you’re simply lured by yourself, because the knight has no one important to it.
@@ecom6ao False knight and watchers also have the vessel leitmotif present, which is...interesting. It's probably because they're shells being controlled by something else, similarly to the vessels...?
Here's something I noticed. The radiance is the only dream boss where you're sent back to the bench you were sitting at AND you have to go back and collect your shade. You also can't dream nail The Hollow Knight.
THK still has dream nail lines, though! Just...not in any way that you'd be able to see them in game. Radiance and white palace are also the only two dream sequences that end steel soul runs, iirc!
I'm pretty sure that Team Cherry has said in the past that their HK music is allowed in videos as long as you give credit in the description of the video iirc
Okay, I’ve always known there was wind in the Basin when going after the Monarch Wings but I never noticed that the wind stops once you collect them. Speaking of background noise, if you haven’t picked up on this already (highly doubt you haven’t), I noticed once in the Queen’s Station, if you listen very carefully, you can hear bells ringing and chattering in the background. Almost like you can hear the past bugs who used to travel the Stagways so long ago. This is actually mentioned by Quirrel, who mentions the fact that he can almost hear the voices of these past bugs.
Fun fact: as you defeat the Dreamers, the background of the Dream Realm will change. The first has a pitch-black sky, the second has a slight orange hue, and the third resembles a dawn. The location is also the same as the Radiance's dream, in which the sun has risen.
Wait holy shit this also is like symbolic of how the dreamers unlock the radiance, seeing as radiance takes the shape of the sun, and completing more and more dreamers advances radiance’s awakening
Also a fun one: Hornet's theme also features the leidmotief of the vessels, since she is also your sibling. However, in Hornet's theme the leidmotief is hard to recognize since it's a lot quicker and a bit changed around in timing Edit: oh no you said it the moment after writing this comment.. now I feel dumb
My favorite design choice in this game is by far about the stag’s name. When you first meet him, and throughout most of the game, his name is “The last stag” because, at the time, it is Bellevue’s he is the last one alive. However, once you inspect the hatched egg in the stag nest and talk to him, his name changes to “old stag” showing that he is no longer the last of his kind. Replaying HK and seeing this just puts a smile on my face to see how much attention to detail was put in to making this game.
I went through most of the deepnest without the lantern. It was more difficult, but most of it was manageable. The farther parts were too dark, so I couldn't get to the hidden village.
A tip I'd like to give to new players- pay attention to the backgrounds because you might miss some great/cute stuff, like the fact that in the Junkyard you can see Fungoons flying in the background
That’s actually pretty wholesome that in the Nosk rematch he mimics Hornet instead of the Knight, cuz the Knight finally knows and cares about people. I’m not sure if that was intentional, but if so that’s some really clever character development
This video is amazing it shows how much of their heart and soul team cherry poured into this game the amount of extra effort they went thru to make this game more fleshed out simple things to make the world feel alive outside of yourself that you really are exploring a dead kingdom
ANOTHER ONE: if you talk to quirrel in the queen's station, he'll give you this line of dialogue, "is it that, just faintly, you can still hear the echo of the bells?" he's not crazy. when you go in, if you stand still, you can hear bells ringing, and people in the station, but just barely. (headphones recommended) isn't that neat?
I didn't know about breakable wall at 10:52. Even after almost 3 years of watching Hollow knight videos. I never have seen that wall discovered until this video.
Huh there are details you mentioned that I never noticed while playing the game! Honestly, I was more set on "Hey, what this?" Or "Oh, hello! And where am I?"
For Nosk I feel like as the Knight, indeed there is nothing more to copy than the Knight itself. But as the player I feel like it's less suspicious seeing the Knight here than anything else. Everyone else seems so different (bugs, but the knight doesn't look like one) that maybe seeing your exact copy feels reassuring. I don't know, that's how I felt like playing deepnest and maybe that's how the dev did too. Great vid !
This at first, and I noticed 2 other things: 1.
@@Zotemann that's true ! i forgot nosk was taking hornet's face in the pantheon after you become a lot closer to hornet and discover you have the same father. thank you !
I saw the giant Pale King statue in a speedrun this morning I thought it looked so incredible that I had to get a photo... And then I completely forgot about it And then you brought it up and I remembered again! And just an extra secret, actually a visual mistake I found on a random run that I doubt anyone else here has noticed: if you have one or more lifeblood masks and you complete a set of four shards with those lifeblood one(s) intact, the new mask will overlap the blue one, and you'll see how similar, yet different they are. The best part though, I found, was the fact that the dripping animation continued to play, so you have the same amount of lives, but instead of shuffling forwards, they overlap (I found it pretty interesting)
Interesting thing concerning the Knight memories is that, after having progressed in the game and reaching a particular pantheon, winged Nosk doesn't use the Knight's figure anymore, but Hornet's While we're at it, the dreamshield makes this tingly noise whenever colliding with geo, which had me at lost for quite some time before figuring this out xD
It's been years and this man's still doing Hollow Knight stuff. I dont know if that says more about him or the sheer amount of content Hollow Knight has.
I got goosebums when i listened to the soundtrack after this video and heard the menu theme in the Bossmusic for the Kollow Knight and the broken vessel.
in my first playthrough i didnt buy the lantern and spent like an hour trying to get to the dreamer in deepnest. until i gave up and searched for a guide yeah, i felt pretty dumb
I have personally gone through Deepnest without the lantern (on my first playthrough), and let me tell you. It was real rough and those fungi do make a huge difference on first time entering a room; however, in the end it is more important to memorize the rooms and explore them that way. The lantern is almost completely required for the region.
Wait this was posted 3 hours ago ? I almost thought this was a 2 yo video. It sounds so calm. I was expecting the comical rants to come back at any random moment.
My theory is that the Vessels are not _really_ hollow, but that their thought patterns are just impossibly different from anything else. Who knows what the Void is thinking? Not the King, he just stole some of it and made robots out of it. Perhaps they can imprint on others, like the HK. But they are born with an unfathomable mind.
Ive been watching your videos mainly for background noise, however im currently in the car and i wanted to let you know how much i thoroughly enjoyed your video despite knowing most of these tidbits of lore. Thank you.
In the Ancient Basin, if you go inside the tram and destroy the speakers and then sit at the bench, you can hear the shade theme. You might have to turn up the volume because it's really quiet.
Another thing about the soul master is that if you listen closely in his second form, you can hear the orbs he shoots saying “help us” did he use some of the souls he claimed in his orb attack?
Another thing with the Blue lake being where the rain in the City of Tears comes from. When you meet Quirrel at a bench in CoT, he says he'd like to see where the rain comes from before he leaves Hallownest, aka the Blue Lake.
Im sure most people know this already, but theres a nursery in the white palace that has a music box playing in the background, and its actually a higher pitched version of the shades theme
This one is pretty obvious i think, but in the waterways close to the godseaker you can see giant hollownest seals on the background similar to the giant king idol in the video
Regarding the number ten: That's also why Nosk copies Hornet when in Pantheon of Hallownest, The Knight already met Hornet and depending on if you fought her twice already, may have even established that she's an ally, so Nosk can now pull Hornet out of his memory and turn into her
I've heard people talk about the "vessel" leitmotif before, but I don't think it's true. Yes, it does appear in Broken Vessel and Sealed Vessel (Pure Vessel is just a remix of Sealed Vessel), but it also appears in Fungal Wastes (0:12), False Knight (0:12), Greenpath (1:17), and, well, the main menu theme. It's also arguable that versions of the theme are also in Truth, Beauty, and Hatred (beginning) and Decisive Battle (also beginning). I feel like the theme is in too many vessel-unrelated songs to really be linked to them. Instead, as it's first heard in the main menu, I think it's just the game's theme in general.
It’s not very cool how you left out that nosk copies the knights most trusted ally hornet after he gained his memories through the adventures. This is only in godhome with nosk hornet version. He did exactly as the description said since he copied the knights memories
When nosk later encounters the knight in pantheon 5 they appear as hornet. Which would make sense as by the point when the player would likely enter godhome, they’ve learned the truth about themselves and view hornet as a ally, giving nosk something in the knights memories to copy
Another thing about Nosk is that the dead bugs along the way to its lair talk about what they saw Nosk as. Some see it as themselves, others see loved ones, or friends. And after the knight goes through the entire game, (more or less) Nosk becomes Hornet, a more of a friend of the knight at the time.
The Nosk thing about it trying to find allies of the Knight's- now it makes sense why Nosk appears as Hornet in Pantheon of Hallownest, because Hornet is the only ally the Knight has that survives all the way through the game, regardless of your descisions.
Not really a secret design choice, but boss animations and enemy animations, when spotting you and/or about to attack, although subtle, give me a very clear message to dash away quick, or ready my nail. I used to be, and still am, really fond of animation, so I notice these windups a bit more delibrately.
About the hallownest seal, i just realised it also represents pk, as a ruler obviously. Or im guessing it does, you caj see the crown and the monarch wings. Also in the wongs area in yhe background where u get wings u can see a seal itself as well..
the reason why winged nosk has the appearance of hornet is because, as the game progresses, the knight becomes less pure of a vessel, especially in godhome, because the very essence of being there is of the knights own will, therefore meaning he has memories of allies, which is hornet

I found it a cool detail thematically because it kinda makes you feel like you're venturing deeper and deeper into the dragon's den (so to speak), but it could also be an interesting potential read on their characters/personalities when one remembers that the King, according to Lemm, was an exceptionally reclusive figure, whereas the White Lady joyfully speaks to who she presumes is Ogrim and overall seems more open to the idea of socializing, as would fit with 'her' area of the Palace
3.) Similar to how the wind stops when you get the Monarch Wings, when you are about to fight Hornet in Kingdom's Edge, the wind starts to gust from her back, into the eyes of the Knight. This gives her a distinct advantage in the first part of the fight, as the ash-choked wind would presumably be an irritant to any assailant no matter if they're vessel or mortal bug, and since the wind appears to be blowing from the corpse of the Wyrm, I'm going to assume that's supposed to tie into the whole 'daughter of Hallownest' shtick she has going for her (though I have no idea why any remnant of the Pale King would help her, other than the fact that she appears to be taking his place in judging the purity/capability of the new vessel; perhaps that is also why she has his leitmotif)
4.) The titles of dream bosses and certain npcs (such as Lost Kin, Soul Tyrant, the Last Stag, and Millibelle) also change when the Knight learns more about the world they're in. For example, though they recognized that the Broken Vessel was related to them in some way (being able to identify them as a vessel in the first place), they had no idea who they were until after they watched them reach out for them and realized that there was still some scrap of their sibling in there, after which the title becomes 'Lost Kin'. Likewise, the Soul Tyrant doesn't earn that title until after they've seen all the bodies of the people he's killed, Millibelle changes from 'the banker' to 'the thief' after she steals your money (and isn't it amusing, how their solution to getting their money back is to literally beat it out of her), and the stag's title changes from 'The Last Stag' to 'The Old Stag' after he tells the Knight that he's hopeful more of his kind is out there
5.) Before you kill a Dreamer, the candles around them are lit; after, they are put out. Though Monomon doesn't have candles around her tank, Quirrel keeps up this trend by telling you that the Madame's life has 'been extinguished'
6.) I may be wrong, but fitting with the first point I made, the imagery of the King in the Soul Sanctum appears to be less prominent/incomplete when compared to the rest of the City of Tears, which fits very well with the fact that the Soul Master ended up going against the King's wishes and going on with his cruel experiments in search of his own immortality
7.) The 'egg' that the Knight hatched from looks more like a seed pod; it has a nearly barklike texture to the surface and trailing vines that look like they're actually a part of the surface, not stuck through, like the Pale King hooked his eggs up to IVs or something.
This is further supported by how the only endings that show a decisive end to the Radiance are the ones where the Knight breaks from the King's plan and confronts the Radiance directly, in Dream no More and Embrace the Void, which imo implies that they were not hollow, merely empty of thought
9.) The Kingsoul in-game costs the most charm notches, at 5, and pairs the best with Glowing Womb, which uses the soul generated by Kingsoul to create hatchlings that kill themselves to fight your battles, doing...pretty shitty damage to them while also negating the benefits of the Kingsoul charm, which I found really fucking hilarious given the fact that it's mr 'no cost too great, I'm going to use my children to fight my battles's' dedicated charm (arguably, both the Pale King and the White Lady's charm now that I think about it, since each half makes one whole. Which is, quite franky, worse)
10.) In the Pantheons, all the 'true' adult gods have a specific arena, with two pillars in the background, only Godseeker watching, and arenas very heavily designed to their elements. And though all the different bosses have arenas that look like their boss areas in-game, that two-pillar only-Godseeker format really highlights the changes made to fit them, which I find really cool
Just...the art and story direction in this game, man.
Holy shit I feel bad for your hands
Also yes I read everything, you do bring up good points, especially the knight not being actually hollow
I think that, while you are right that the Knight isn't fully hollow until they get Void Heart, I think there's a logical explanation to them flailing from the acid- even if they have no emotions, thoughts, etc., their self preservation would still kick in whether they were actually afraid or not.
Anybody else realise fury of the fallen is markoth?
@@danielv3746 You got a point there, I suppose.
"Did you catch that the wind in the Ancient Basin dies down when you get the Monarch Wings?"
That was actually the only one on this list that I (somehow) had never noticed before, and I thank you for bringing it to my attention sir!
Me too
I didn't even notice the wind.
I will add one thing that I think noone has pointed out:
In Godhome you can fight Winged Nosk, but this time it imitates Hornet. This means that the knight remembers Hornet as an ally. This also means that the knight isn't truly hollow and can still form memories and feelings.
@Telling it’s the bad ending for a reason I guess
And how some NPC and bosses names change, the Knight changes his view on them.
you didn't even mention the fact that the city of tears has a poorer side and a richer side, as seen by the architecture, characters, and enemies on each side
that was kind of obvious though
Yeah, on my second run I noticed and I now know that bugs have class devide
thats because we all already know that
Indeed, if you read the hunter's journal, the description of the smaller husks in the city mentions oppression and corruption among the riches before the kingdom fell.
Bug capitalism :(
Also a comment on Nosk: if you dream nail the dead people on the way to the boss, first you become a little scared because it is all very strange and that’s a cool detail, but also one of them says “Brother” or something, which is probably their last word before dying, when they saw the illusion of their brother
stop running... how?.. brother?...
this freaked me out so much!
This happens quite often in subareas
And the soultwister represents the shell of the soul master incl his cloak
Also things related to Nosk:
Oh, that's clever, Winged Nosk is encountered after the Knight has already had many encounters with Hornet and found out that they are half-siblings, so it makes sense that now the Knight actually has memories for Winged Nosk to copy!
i always wonder why nosk has hornet's features but now it makes sense
Siblings!!!!
even after playing 75 hours of this game i still didnt realize any of these. damn team cherry did a good job, holy shit
I think I got like 200 and still didn't realize most of these
1,000 hours and i've only noticed half
A fun fact relating to the Fog Canyon:
Its theme is Greenpath's theme, watered down. Makes sense- the place is surrounded from 2 sides by a form of Greenpath. But actually, Wanderer's Journal actually confirms that Fog Canyon was in fact, a part of Greenpath
I thought I was the only one who knew this, I guess not :)
O.o
ohhhhh motto motto likes u
I have no earthly idea who “motto motto” is, but I appreciate the affection from a human. You see, I was an outcast from my own planet, so nobody “likes” me there, anymore.
Ashtoreth Tenebrous are you okay
And how have you not seen madagascar
Tovi Heyyy My eyes have not yet adapted to the filmography on your planet. It leaves my brains fuzzy. Someday, perhaps, I shall adapt.
Fun detail: In Paintmaster Sheo's fight he's painting Godmaster
I just noticed this today and got really happy
YOO I'M GLAD SOMEBODY ELSE NOTICED HORNET HAVING THE PALE BEING MOTIF IN HER THEME
The white defender and the false knight also have the pale king theme
ECom6ão which makes sense, they were both from the pale court (well at least Hegamol’s armour was)
@@finlynham5841 yeah, the false knight theme also makes sense with the watcher knights, who served lurien
I’m a simple man. Rusty makes a Hollow Knight video, I click
Ok foekoe
@@weaversong4377 the three weaverlings share profile?
yup
It's crazy how you can still find new things in this game, several years after it came out
The leitmotiff it is also in the False and Watcher Knights, this is probably because they are all “Hollow Knights” or at least Hollow Armors
Also a fun one: Hornet's theme also features the leidmotief of the vessels, since she is also your sibling. However, in Hornet's theme the leidmotief is hard to recognize since it's a lot quicker and a bit changed around in timing
Edit: oh no you said it the moment after writing this comment.. now I feel dumb
2:58
Speedrunners: what's Isma's tear?
Game journalists: What is Fog Canyon?
I went through most of the deepnest without the lantern. It was more difficult, but most of it was manageable. The farther parts were too dark, so I couldn't get to the hidden village.
Honestly, seeing Rusty this calm is oddly soothing
The attention to detail in this game never fails to amaze me, this game is truly a masterpiece. Great video, a part 2 would be much appreciated!
agreed!
If Hollow Knight is this perfect, just imagine what Silksong is gonna be like
Thats why, rush game will always be bad, i hope the more longer of silksong the more good the game is
Th3_ Ph4nt0m shhhhh
A tip I'd like to give to new players- pay attention to the backgrounds because you might miss some great/cute stuff, like the fact that in the Junkyard you can see Fungoons flying in the background
That’s actually pretty wholesome that in the Nosk rematch he mimics Hornet instead of the Knight, cuz the Knight finally knows and cares about people. I’m not sure if that was intentional, but if so that’s some really clever character development
:D I love seeing how much thought is put into designs and art in games and shows.
This video is amazing it shows how much of their heart and soul team cherry poured into this game the amount of extra effort they went thru to make this game more fleshed out simple things to make the world feel alive outside of yourself that you really are exploring a dead kingdom
Also, the bench in the Archives has Monomon's face on it.
I actually noticed Marissa's singing pretty early on. It's really pretty
If it weren’t for all of you hollowknight youtubers I probably would of lost hope for silksong ever coming out a long time ago. Also great job!
ANOTHER ONE: if you talk to quirrel in the queen's station, he'll give you this line of dialogue, "is it that, just faintly, you can still hear the echo of the bells?"
he's not crazy. when you go in, if you stand still, you can hear bells ringing, and people in the station, but just barely. (headphones recommended) isn't that neat?
I didn't know about breakable wall at 10:52. Even after almost 3 years of watching Hollow knight videos. I never have seen that wall discovered until this video.
As much as I enjoy your cursing, this was really relaxing
Huh there are details you mentioned that I never noticed while playing the game! Honestly, I was more set on "Hey, what this?" Or "Oh, hello! And where am I?"
For Nosk I feel like as the Knight, indeed there is nothing more to copy than the Knight itself. But as the player I feel like it's less suspicious seeing the Knight here than anything else. Everyone else seems so different (bugs, but the knight doesn't look like one) that maybe seeing your exact copy feels reassuring. I don't know, that's how I felt like playing deepnest and maybe that's how the dev did too. Great vid !
This at first, and I noticed 2 other things:
@@Zotemann that's true ! i forgot nosk was taking hornet's face in the pantheon after you become a lot closer to hornet and discover you have the same father. thank you !
I saw the giant Pale King statue in a speedrun this morning
I thought it looked so incredible that I had to get a photo... And then I completely forgot about it
And then you brought it up and I remembered again!
The best part though, I found, was the fact that the dripping animation continued to play, so you have the same amount of lives, but instead of shuffling forwards, they overlap
(I found it pretty interesting)
"it stops the wind in the basin"
wait there was wind in the basin?
You can hear the wind blowing and particles flow.
Interesting thing concerning the Knight memories is that, after having progressed in the game and reaching a particular pantheon, winged Nosk doesn't use the Knight's figure anymore, but Hornet's
While we're at it, the dreamshield makes this tingly noise whenever colliding with geo, which had me at lost for quite some time before figuring this out xD
It's been years and this man's still doing Hollow Knight stuff. I dont know if that says more about him or the sheer amount of content Hollow Knight has.
I got goosebums when i listened to the soundtrack after this video and heard the menu theme in the Bossmusic for the Kollow Knight and the broken vessel.
in my first playthrough i didnt buy the lantern and spent like an hour trying to get to the dreamer in deepnest. until i gave up and searched for a guide
yeah, i felt pretty dumb
I have personally gone through Deepnest without the lantern (on my first playthrough), and let me tell you. It was real rough and those fungi do make a huge difference on first time entering a room; however, in the end it is more important to memorize the rooms and explore them that way. The lantern is almost completely required for the region.
Wow, this is so calming. I was expecting curses- you prove me wrong.
Wait this was posted 3 hours ago ?
I almost thought this was a 2 yo video.
It sounds so calm.
I was expecting the comical rants to come back at any random moment.
at the fountain where you put in geo to get a soul shard the pale king actually holds a soul shard and when you get the soul shard it disappears
And they say Dark Souls is really good at enviromental storytelling...
Hollow Knight is trully magnificent.
So happy to see the word leitmotif in a Rusty video
to add to #14, i'm pretty sure the save icon is also a hallownest seal, or a king's idol, or some combination of both
The hallownesy seal (the save icon and stuff present in-game) includes the shape of the pale kings crown/head spike things
Ive been watching your videos mainly for background noise, however im currently in the car and i wanted to let you know how much i thoroughly enjoyed your video despite knowing most of these tidbits of lore. Thank you.
WOW! I have so many hours in this game and never noticed so many things! Thanks for this video, it's awesome!
It baffles me that game made by 2 people has this much detail put into it especially when the scale of this game is this huge.
I really fucking love the background music in this video, good job rusty!
OH MY GOSH SOMEONE FINALLY BROUGHT UP THE ARCHITECTURE OF HALLOWNEST IM GOING TO CRY
Im sure most people know this already, but theres a nursery in the white palace that has a music box playing in the background, and its actually a higher pitched version of the shades theme
It's actually in a major key.
This one is pretty obvious i think, but in the waterways close to the godseaker you can see giant hollownest seals on the background similar to the giant king idol in the video
Does anyone remember that bench in SW Queens Gardens actually plays its music through a little speaker cuz I always thought that was a cute detail
This is the calmest I’ve ever heard you speak about deepest
I’ve always loved the leitmotifs in Hollow Knight. Did you know the Dream realm theme is used in the Radiance fight?
It’s not very cool how you left out that nosk copies the knights most trusted ally hornet after he gained his memories through the adventures. This is only in godhome with nosk hornet version. He did exactly as the description said since he copied the knights memories
When nosk later encounters the knight in pantheon 5 they appear as hornet. Which would make sense as by the point when the player would likely enter godhome, they’ve learned the truth about themselves and view hornet as a ally, giving nosk something in the knights memories to copy
I'm so happy
I just did absrad on ascended
congrats!
@@thecosmicjester4024 thanks
I want to go back and play hollow knight for the first time again. The true magic of discovering things for the first time is incredible.
This is probably one of the only videos Rusty has done with no cursing. Except the ones he doesn't speak in. Congratulations.
The Nosk thing about it trying to find allies of the Knight's- now it makes sense why Nosk appears as Hornet in Pantheon of Hallownest, because Hornet is the only ally the Knight has that survives all the way through the game, regardless of your descisions.
Jhins theme is so good
*Refers to The Distant Village as a safe haven* I never doubted your God-like sarcasm, Rusty 😎
About that geo thing... i always thought that when geo falls into acid it actually gets destroyed
You just made my day a little bit better :)
No one talks about how the this the White Lady is in looks like a seed
Hey there.
So uh, a bunch of shades just came in and they're all complaining about buzzsaws
Do you uh.. do you have anything to do with that?
As much as it makes sense that taking the monarch wings stops the wind... *I hate it.* The wind makes the ancient basin look a lot cooler.
6:50 and that’s why later in the game Nosk takes hornets form, I just realized that.
I never knew bout the lumaflies so i'ma save them everytime i see em now
Not really a secret design choice, but boss animations and enemy animations, when spotting you and/or about to attack, although subtle, give me a very clear message to dash away quick, or ready my nail. I used to be, and still am, really fond of animation, so I notice these windups a bit more delibrately.
Wow no off brand rage compilations well done rusty
Wow, I'm an oblivious idiot
Considering I'm a music nerd (and a fan of 8 Bit Music Theory), I already knew about the various leitmotifs thrown around in the game's soundtrack.
I have been playing steamworld dig lately and it feels so weird seeing the knight attack in mid-air.
About the hallownest seal, i just realised it also represents pk, as a ruler obviously.
Or im guessing it does, you caj see the crown and the monarch wings. Also in the wongs area in yhe background where u get wings u can see a seal itself as well..
"The architecture is more structured to let you know that a safe heaven is ahead"
*Shows the Distant Village's houses*
Great video, thanks a lot for explaining all this details!
the reason why winged nosk has the appearance of hornet is because, as the game progresses, the knight becomes less pure of a vessel, especially in godhome, because the very essence of being there is of the knights own will, therefore meaning he has memories of allies, which is hornet
