- The CPTV Original, WHEN DISASTER STRUCK CONNECTICUT, provides an in-depth look at the four major natural disasters that befell Connecticut between 1888 and 1955. These include the monumental King Blizzard (which delivered 20 to 50 inches of snow and drifts of up to 20 feet); two floods of near-Biblical proportions; and the most destructive hurricane in the state's history. Archival sources and eyewitness accounts paint a vivid picture of how Connecticut residents coped with-and overcame-these merciless forces of nature.
There will be a documentary about August 18, 2024 someday.
Today has been a horrible day in the towns of Southbury, Oxford, Woodbury, and Monroe.
Yes indeed.
Thank God it wasn't that bad this time around.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I was 6 spent over 2 days on the part of roof of our house that was left. It was Granbrook park in East Granby. Helicopter tried to rescue us but because the roof was wedged into huge pine trees , they couldn't reach us. The water was so deep in this valley it was over the street lights. 2 guys in a small fishing boat ( I believe one was Chick Viets but I was only 6). Their boat was swamped and the raging water took it under the roof of the house. My dad thought they drowned but minutes later heard tapping under the roof, he managed to tear open a whole & drag them up with us. It was almost another day when a friend got his cabin cruiser frow Weathersfield Cove & rescued us (our family of 5 & the 2 men.) These videos bring back so many emotions. A friend was the last person to cross the Spoonville bridge. Someone was looking after all of us.
I remember people talking about this and my friend had a home there; somewhat up the hill from Granbrook park I remember driving up to Torrington with my dad and grandpa looking at the flood damage. I was about 3.
The girl in the first photo is my Uncles Sister the baby she is holding is my Uncle.

I never heard of this before!
Yes, my parents talked about this for years.
I was only six but remember all the lost bridges, roads, trails, and fields filled with water. Some of that water lingered for a long time. People's living rooms floating down the river.
I was born 53 years after the flood in 2008 I'm currently 13 I live in Winsted
@@sadgirlhappygirl5701 I still remember all the buildings on the left side of Winsted before the flood. Downtown used to be a very busy place in the early 1950's. The town still has some great architecture.
My grandfather was in the flood in Waterbury ct
Does anyone know the name of this documentary's backround musical score? Very moving. Haunting.
Always makes me sad when I see pictures of my hometown of Winsted before the flood. Growing up in the 80's it was just a shell of the town my grandparents lived in.
thanks
I have only heard the stories my mother told me of it when she was a kid
Remarkable how respected politicians were and what they went on to become... 50 years later, Katrina hit, and the head of FEMA resigned. Look at where we've come...
There was a beautiful stone tunnel to drive through in naugatuck to drive through . It was damaged and they moved the road . It still exists but only water from the dam go through it now
where is it located? I've worked in Naugatuck for 18 years.
