  • Hey skaters! Join me as we dive deep into the world of roller skate stalls. Of course, these are not every stall out there and may be referred to by different names in different skating communities. After skating both blades and roller skates and researching the resources below, the names in this video are my personal opinion. If you use other names for any of these stalls, let me know in the comments.

    This is the video the community needs! I've been struggling so much to learn tricks because I don't even know what they are. The CIB trictionary was good, but I need visuals to understand the trick. Thank you so much, Shorty!

    Shorty! You are so athletic! I love your videos. Was wondering if you'd do a video on falling safely? I'm pretty good at falling... but I'd like to get better at it before I try any more fakie tricks😂 nursing a dislocated shoulder rn from falling after a fakie plate stall. Eye roll.

    • @ShortysSkateSeries
      @ShortysSkateSeries  Рік тому +2

      Yes it's on my to do list. I'll look to do it soon. If it's ok with you, can you tell me how you fell to dislocate your shoulder as I'll try and see if I can think of a way to minimise risk.

      Omg... How awesome! I just got my fakie stall, and was transferring it to a bigger bowl. After I did the fakie stall i lost my footing. As I was trying to self correct, I fell backwards and went to catch myself ... I think that's how it happened. Happened so fast...
      Thank you for considering this!! 🙏

    Great video to watch but 54 names just for stall variations? ... YIKES! In the late 70's my sk8 buds and I pioneered most of the quad vert tricks performed today and never named even one of them ... that was a boarder thing and their tricks were boring, we were having way to much fun and just who would we have told anyway? I'm now 73 and 'new names' don't always stick with me anymore. Thanks for enlightening this next generation of quad vert skaters :)

    • @ShortysSkateSeries

      I may have some of the names wrong and a lot are borrowed from blading, which not all people agree with but I guess this list is a starting point for those looking to learn.

    I like to do more variations on the one foot stalls, always trying to come up with new combos. Like grab switches from one hand to the other, and behind the back/across the body, basically reverse flamingo and reverse Marilyn. I also do toe/heel “taps” with the palm of my hand, as many as I can before I lose balance 😅

    Thanks for making this, it's super helpful! Though I still feel really confused about the combination between skateboard and inline terminology we're using as rollerskaters. Maybe about time we as rollerskaters come up with our own terminology? ( :

      Since I also blade isn't not so confusing for me. But I would love to see the roller skating community come up with their our names. I suck and choosing things so I would be very bad at it.

    hello shorty, great video as always !! Though I think I noticed a mistake, isn't the estrokick suposed to end with a 180 jump? Seems that on the video you're doing just a 1 foot backside. Also I strugle to understand the difference between darkside and regular tabernacle, it is just a matter of dominant foot ? Thanks a lot for you content!! 🌞

    • @ShortysSkateSeries
      @ShortysSkateSeries  Рік тому +1

      Ah yes I think you are right about the Estrokick. I don't really do those tricks so my mistake.
      So I believe a tabernacle has your trailing foot turning to face into the ramp in front on your leading foot. Darkside has your trailing foot still turning to face into the ramp but you place it behind your leading foot.

    What trucks are you using? I have Penny trucks on my boots with tracer plates and the angle is wrong. I have to skate with my trucks super tight so the cushions contact the trucks fully.

    • @ShortysSkateSeries
      @ShortysSkateSeries  Рік тому +1

      I'm using the new Bont grind truck which will be available soon. It's 2.3", so not as wide as the Penny truck, so you can still keep a lot of agility.

    • @CURS3DC0WB0Y
      @CURS3DC0WB0Y Рік тому

      @@ShortysSkateSeries They should make a 3" also! With a 2.3" on a longer plate, the wheel base would be more rectangular. I prefer a wider truck for certain tricks like feeble/smith or grinding on a thicker rail. I'd love to test them if possible!!!

    Hi Shorty, I was hoping you could give me some much needed advice.
    I'm at the point where I'm trying to figure out whether to spend 4-500 bucks on some Bont Parkstars or 2-300 on inline skates.
    I've skated inlines before but I like the easthetics of quads more. The thing is I know a couple of people who skate quads and they say inline is overall just way better and cheaper. Aggressive quadskates are just too new of a thing and too expensive compared to good inlines.
    I really can't decide to spend that much money on something of the cheaper alternative is "better" just for easthetics.
    Do you, or anyone in the comments" have any advice?

    • @ShortysSkateSeries
      @ShortysSkateSeries  Рік тому +1

      So blades were design for aggressive skating where was quads have been modified to be able to aggressive skate. Quads are a lot of fun and you can do a whole range of skating on them, but if you're just looking to aggressive skate on ramps, ledges, rails, vert etc then inlines will preform better and you won't need to add on parts.
      If you do order from bont.com I have a code SHORTY which gives you 10% off. If you have any more questions let me know.

      @@ShortysSkateSeries thanks for your reply and your thoughts on it. After some back and forth with Bont I've came to realise Parkstars aren't going to work for me because I have double wide feet, according to their chart. Rather bummed about that. But I do plan on getting some Karma Pros, so rollerskating it is! Very excited

    what you call a 'backside stall, i would probably call a fakie stall', since in skateboarding, backside and frontside refers to the direction you turn from the ramp. Otherwise there is no way to disinguish which way you are turning in a 180 stall. SO what you call a 'Backside stall' i would call it a 'backside (180) fakie stall' and if you do the same stall, just turning clockwise that would be a 'frontside (180) faike stall'

    • @strangerpainter
      @strangerpainter Рік тому

      euqally if you do 360, you could also apply this, so it would be 'frontside 360' and 'backside 360'

    • @ShortysSkateSeries
      @ShortysSkateSeries  Рік тому +1

      That's interesting, I have called a 'backside' a '180 backside' as well, but I do lean towards just calling it 'backside' since it's shorter. In blading I've heard it called 'setting up'. Also if you turn your non-dominate way into a 'backside' it would be 'backside switch'.

    • @rollerscab
      @rollerscab Рік тому

      I partially agree. But also I don't understand why we're using the term "topside" (an inlining term) which basically implies doing a grind/stall/trick with your non-dominant foot. Which equals "switch" (a skateboarding term), which also implies doing a grind/stall/trick with your non-dominant foot. I've noticed we don't really use the term "switch" in rollerskating. But we do use back- and frontsides just like skateboarders, but in a really different way. It's super confusing. I feel like we as rollerskaters should come up with our own terminology that does make sense

    • @ShortysSkateSeries
      @ShortysSkateSeries  Рік тому

      ‘Topside’ tricks are still landing dominate foot but turning the other way. Eg you can have ‘soul’ ‘topside soul’ ‘soul switch’ and ‘topside soul switch’. I guess there had to be a difference between turning the opposite way as well as also switching feet 🤔
      Also I believe the term ‘switch’ is being used in roller skating communities especially in comps as switch trick are usually scored harder.
      In terms of changing names, I say if the roller skating community want to do it, go for it! I look forward to seeing what it comes with.
