Twitch live viewership of this episode peaked around 58,000 people. The in-game start date for the episode was the 19th of Horisal 836. Sam’s flask says, “How can you trust a man who can’t even decide if he has hair?” with pictures of bald and haired Liam.
So, because of a change in how they’ve been editing the art montages, my stamps are usually not accurate for times after the break immediately upon posting. I will guarantee edits for that second half within 5 minutes. As for last week, that was just sloppiness on my part. Won’t happen again. Love y’all!

I caught up for campaign 3 and It honestly kind of sucks lol. I do not have the patience for this. After binging Campaign 1 and 2 in 4 and a bit months... lol oh well. Like, spoilers for Campaign 1 and 2
I think one of Tharizdun's chains is in Whitestone! Think about it. It's where Pelor and Ioun fought him and where Ioun was wounded, and it's where Pelor planted the Sun Tree, though the reason was lost to time. And one of Ioun's Ziggurats is under the tree. That's why the Briarwoods went there in the first place, because it was a source of power and to corrupt something of Ioun's, but nobody stopped to ask WHY it was there in the first place?!?! It had nothing to do with Vecna originally so why is it there!
Matt dropped a few references to Tharizdun in C1 so when he popped up in C2 I screamed lol. Also one time when Marisha was getting frustrated talking to the Sun Tree, and basically said well it's a tree, what did I expect?, Matt said that the tree could know a lot, you just have to ask the right questions...AAAAAH!

OMG this might be the best comment I have read in some years ROFL
-Matt sets up huge dramatic prison break sequence.
-Caleb hands over the beacon and makes allies of the Kryn
-Matt's eyes widen as he throws out 20 pages of plot
At least no jail miniatures will go to waste with these guys.
As a dm these are some of the best moments, when youre players truly do something you thought theyd never do. Yeah it sucks cause you lose a story arc you wanted them to go down but nothing is better then being shocked as dm.
This excited Matt more than any boring prison break would have. These are the moments he lives for.
Matt said in one of his fireside chats that he doesn't plan plot out in detail ahead of time, more broad strokes and then waits to see where the party goes.
He has plot hooks prepared and the world building but I think he's experienced enough to know that whatever you plan the player's will throw it out the window at a moment's notice.
Just a reminder that Caleb presented his dramatic turn, facing a dark elf queen in her throne room and potentially wholly altering the course of the continent's history, while covered in mud and BDSM gear.
At least he wasn't wearing the octopus this time XD
Not just mud...
@@rhokesh4391 honestly, I don’t know if it would’ve made the situation any weirder.

The Bright Queen has no idea what she just got herself into. I give it a month before Xhorhas collapses into anarchy.

"Yeah, we're gonna steal this boat and become pirates..." is no longer the biggest curveball thrown at Matt.
The biggest wrench in the gears any DM can have continues to be: Players.
I don't see how that was a curveball. He was threatening to throw them in prison, which I imagine would entail all their stuff being confiscated, including the relic. It was really the only smart option they had left
@@mcdonb2 I suppose the entire lead up and event. Walking into certain doom thoughtlessly and everything that followed. Don't get me wrong, it was the best possible course of action given the situation, but an entire domino effect that likely wasn't foreseen. As a DM myself, I can say with certainty that no one clears the table of your plans quite like your players do.
Christopher M Zdenek fair enough. Taking the relic into the queens thrown room and having your goblin try to spit lies at her was bound to be a disaster
Remember when they were just going to hop into the city of beasts, buy transportation, and then gtfo? But they've been pressing their luck for several episodes now. "No one in town has tried to kill us or arrest us yet, might as well push it further." So I feel this was inevitable with the volume of rolls they were using to survive out in the open in enemy territory. But leave it to "Curveball" Widogast to step it up a notch. :D
Travis being the silent one when his character have the skills to do the talking is a big problem to the party. By the way Fjord was created I tought he would be the party "leader" but Travis insist in step back.

@@iwillcry As a dnd player, dm prep time is always spoopy. It's just sorta spoop by nature

It's a mistress with whom they both have a dalliance.
"So, do you want 10 000 gold, or get yourself into trouble ?"
That was an easy choice for the Mighty Nine.
Man at the end of the ep I'm not surprised if they get ALL of the gold in the land
"but... you know... we still got like... 2 000 gold so it was not that bad." - Jester.
I was yelling at my screen. These are DROW. They were playing with fire hotter than the sun. You take the gold and skedaddle. It's DnD, there are a thousand ways to do things and once again they picked the worst.

I have definitely had this exchange with my players, to the point that just seeing me hold a die is enough to reel them all in when they get too off track.

This was honestly PERFECT for Caleb's arc. A man essentially betrayed and left for dead by the Empire, escapes the mental asylum, becomes a ghost, forgotten to time. But then returns, with possibly a NUKE, to give to the enemy. The man forgotten, the ghost of Bren Aldric Ermendrud has returned.
I can only assume that the Beacon will give them an endless army to throw at the Empire or something seeing how rebirth is the core of their religion.
...in a gimp suit. :D
CampaignerSC this episode is old but remember they said the beacon only transfers their souls into a newborn. They have to train for many years to remember their old memories. The beacon is in no way a weapon for endless armies.
The beacon is essentially the same concept as the Adra in Pillars of Eternity, where without souls traveling through the dodecahedron, children are born soul-less husks. The same plot except tweaked in this dnd campaign. You know Matt is a huge fan of the series, im excited to see him incorperate something so cool into his own world.

Kyouko Tsukino I was talking campaign 1 with Vax, I thought that was clarified my bad. LUL
Laura's smile at 2:52:17 as Caleb says "I'm coming to you". Always true to her own sexual inner jokes, no matter how dire the situation is.
I commend Lady Zethriss for having a lot of patience. It seemed like she was gonna break with the amount of stressed sighing she was doing.
Caleb Widogast - The undisputed king of power moves and cliffhangers
I love a good DnD power move. It always ends up so cool, even when it ruins everything
FACT, geeez
I was hoping this would happen!
Can I just say the level of character immersion in this show is amazing. At 2:00:55 Matt says there is an orc and a half orc and Travis almost instantly becomes self conscious of his teeth. So damn good considering Travis has openly admitted he doesn't do these things intentionally lol
Good catch!! Wow.
Wow that's crazy I just rewatched that and that's some great rp on his part
Holy cow, the amount of detail here to notice that...and for Travis to react that way...really shows how much he has BECOME Fjord when he plays. God I love this cast
This is not to detract from his talent as an actor but I do think that you've read something that wasn't there in this instance. If you go back a moment further, you'll notice Travis is snacking on things leading up to this. I think him running his tongue over his teeth here is Travis getting food out of his gums, not Fjord being self conscious of his tusks.
@@RobertHartleyGM also possible, timing was perfect if it was accidental!
I love the heart eyes Liam gives Matt whenever he acts out a character or does an impression just like the eyes he gave Matt when he impersonated cad early in the episode.
They are all theatre kids, but Liam is the biggest theatre kid in the bunch, and always will be. And I love that about him. He just truly loves and delights in the craft of acting.
I got goosebumps when Caleb said “I am from the empire but I am no friend of the empire”
Liam is always so eloquent with Caleb. That was a terrific moment.
"You dont want to be eviscerated on arrival"
Sam: "well not RIGHT on arrival"
Sams great
Is he? Is this good roleplaying in a dire situation where he wants to rescue his husband? No, it is Sam being the clown he is - love it or hate it. Personally for me he is often borderline to ruining the fun with this. So glad that he is the only one doing it to this extent (yes I know Jester but at least Laura prepared a better character for this).
Quite close to very portentous famous last words there

"--And you all declared war on a country! I live there guys!"
The last time he wasn't there they all turned into cows.
@@theprideling What episode was that? Are you talking about consequences and cows or what?
Looking back now, man, this is one of the moments where the entire trajectory of the campaign changed.
It DID! Imagine how differently things could have gone if the M9 had just gone to jail, broken out, and then kept on running to the next place.
"We apologize it took us an entire day to solve that problem" Never change Sam
You know you did something crazy when the god of DM's says "I am glad we have a week off cause I need to do some planning" A+ to Caleb for that move
The moment Liam spoke, I knew what he was going to do. It was the best way to save their asses and get immediatly back in the favour with the queen, it fits Calebs desire to protect his friends and his hatred of the Empire.
My thought was: they're gonna find it when they search their belongings anyway so why not. Though afterwards it sounded like Matt wouldn't have let that happen
@TK Wallace Vax got himself into trouble several times in the first two campaign arcs of VM because he was so stealthy that he'd rely on it overly much and get caught out too far ahead with no backup. He was still a bit of an introvert, but I don't think he was as analytical.
edit: I think Liam went with a wizard this time because it's such a toolbox that he can flex his intelligent analysis game. Vax was very one-note (as most assassin rogues are). "Dagger, dagger, dagger" was his callsign and pretty much his entire combat role.
Yes ✅✅✅
Totally agree, even at a minimum he is going to help nott get her husband back at any cost. Even if it cost a time bending, reality warping god stone 😂
@@SickRedApple That was my exact same thought.
I like the fact that they killed Gnolls in the beginning and now the Gnolls are NPCs.
They have a bad habit of lying even when it’s unnecessary and even if their lies are more likely to cause trouble than the truth would, so I’m glad that last moment of the episode was resolved with the truth. I wonder if they learned a lesson…
Fr though it drives me crazy. Even when they were reporting in about closing the rift and stuff they lied for no reason saying that there was no proof because the bodies were ethereal despite all of the bodies literally still being down there which will 100% would have been checked and verified before delivering payment realistically speaking. They are only not constantly screwing themselves over due to Matts leniency.
Spoilers:
Gotta love how the Mighty Nein are slowly working their way up in the world by making allies:
First the quirky old wizard in Nicodranas,
then the entire Krynn Empire.
Maybe they also will tame Ukotoa and mount him to travel here and there
As well as a crime lord in wild mount

After Ukotoa (demi-god) an actual deity as an ally?
Why is it that everytime the mighty nine gets trapped into a corner, Caleb is the one to do the thing most unpredictable... (i'm talking about the wall of fire he did on the Boat)
Because wizards have to be one part crazy to every part smart just to make up for their armor class.
Also being a member of the Nein. That's just basic survival apparently.
That's what I'm going with anyways.

My favorite part of watching this in 2022 (almost 2023) is listening to them talk about The Legend Of Vox Machina animated series. Can't wait to see their reactions at the end. So freaking awesome!
Especially since Amazon agreed to a season 2 and 3! I hope it makes them tons of money and the Mighty Nien get one too!
You beat me to this one by two weeks LOL I was thinking the same thing
Really hope the M9 gets one!
Let's see what happens with Wizards and the fickle fan base.
We got one for them too 🥲
@@bigdrew565 first thing i thought of when the stuff hit the fan with that whole situation...
Nott: "no PTS...?"
Caleb: well I mean...I was manipulated all my life what do you think?
I feel so bad for him during this scene. Him emphasizing that he never been controlled through arcane means bc he HAS been brainwashed in the past just broke my heart. Like he still sees as his past completely his fault.
A figure of royalty uttering the phrase "sexy bugbears"; my life is complete.

I find it interesting how everyone (Sam and the audience) is treating the Dodecahedron as a Nuke- A mere weapon. Whereas it literally brought the Bright queen to tears. It means alot more to them than a 'Big magic bomb made of souls'. It's a cornerstone of their Religion! It's their holy grail, their true cross. An item they had deemed lost to them- in bitterness and pain.
And it has been returned to them. No one would react like ALL those people did, if it was a mere weapon. The sheer awe in all of their actions and reactions the moment Caleb pulled the Beacon out shows that.
Also- As much as I love the entire Nein, this cements Caleb as my favourite. Even if he's not no.1 by a very large margin. I still love the rest a hell of a lot. which marks for amazing characters.
Makes you reconsider how strong the people who stole it were. The M9 beat one of them early on but you don't steal something that wanted without having a ton of skills.
Yeah the wizards killed them but Trent and his compatriots might just be even greater monsters.
@@RonquixoteDIII They only beat that guy because he was really hurt. If you recall in the episode he had his hand against the wall panting heavily and hurt by the mages.
I find it hilarious how they were just calling it the Dingle-Danger, and only now when they're handing it over do they realize how dangerous that could possibly be.
To be fair, I think they'e only calling it a "nuke" as shorthand to indicate something compact yet powerful. They would be the first to admit they don't completely understand it.
The Dingle-danga is more than a simple powersource and religious object though, it is the soul stone of their race and what enables them to reincarnate, not to mention that it can bend fate. It is so much easier to call it a nuke than to list what it is and how bad it could be in the hands of the people they were taught are evil.
Watching Sam's celebrity endorsements just made me think about how infrequently Sam mentions his Emmy. You'd think he would mention it every chance he gets (in a joking way), but it's usually the others who mention it. He seems like a super humble guy masquerading as an ego maniac
I agree, I really think Sam is incredibly talented. I've adored him since C1 and that feeling has only continued to grow.
I agree. Same with Ashley and her BAFTA (and now Laura has one too!) -- I loved that after Ashley got it, the BAFTA circulated through the entire cast. Everyone got to keep it for awhile. That's so typical of them.
I'm always amazed at how much work Matt and the crew put into this. Also how flexible he can be with creating and adapting the story on the fly to fit the narrative. Screw Game of thrones, I got Critical Role.
Love your comment ❤
Matthew Mercer: [Creates an artifact that can change fate itself]
Travis: [Calls it the *Dingle-Danger*].
And we love him for that - Travis can be hilarious but he keeps the balance - others (I don't need to name them ;) ) are much worse when it comes to this.
Liam: [Uses it for the best cliffhanger ever]

I love how Matt does an awesome job at portraying the overvillification of the enemy within both the Empire and the Kryn, and how none of them are actually the "Good Guys". Sam's response of "We gave a nuke to the bad guys is a show of how effective this type of propaganda can be.

Jester needs some credit for jumping in with the "We should just tell them we're pirates." If they really WERE being eavesdropped on, that really could've saved their skins.
One of the best things about Sam's campaign video is that about midway through, you realize that "O, Canada!" is playing in the background.
Or the instant that it starts, because you are Canadian, and proceed to spend the rest of the ad fuming about it being labelled "patriotic music."
